I brought my daughter's car for smog check today 7-31-2023. She left $50 cash in her purses by passenger seat. I locked the car before I went-in. About to pay after smog check and the $50 cash was stolen right after the services done. I spoke with the person that he claims he is a manager. Problems never resolve. Terrible experience. Do not bring your car there for any services. I can't submit review without fill in rating. They are not even deserve any star at all.

Revdex.com: I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted] , and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me and the matter has been resolved Sincerely, [redacted] ?

After the first service call I was told that a crank was needed to lift the unit I agreed to that after the second call I was told that a wire was shorted at that point I believe I should have received a proposal for all repairs needed instead of return trips that The NYAC was billed for also the hand crank that the NYAC agreed to purchase for $was never delivered

On 11/**/16, we received a call from Wayne to service NY Athletic Club’s NWOV, which is an older unit. He stated there were sparks coming from the motor. We scheduled an appointment for 11/**/16 where the price of $400.00 was agreed prior to service with the customer before dispatch. On 11/**/16 we...

did an evaluation on the unit and determined a manual lowering hand crank was needed and an additional person was required. The manual lowering hand crank is a special tool for lowering the unit and should always be available onsite by the property owner. This is not a typical tool carried in our service vans. Refer to invoice [redacted].We returned on 12/*/16 with 2 technicians and the manual hand crank to manually raise the unit. We found the frayed cable causing the short in the wiring causing the sparks on the motor and corrected the problem. Once again prices were agreed with the customer and signed off by a representative. Refer to invoice [redacted]We were called in and serviced the unit on 12/**/16. The unit was not running due to water flowing into the interlock and freezing it. We opened and repaired the lock and informed the customer if this happens again we would need to replace the lock. Prices were agreed prior to service with the customer and signed off by a representative and also left the manual hand crank. Refer to invoice [redacted] & [redacted].On 12/**/16, we returned at no charge to the customer and the technician noted that the panel strip, the call send, and the call buttons needs to be replaced. We sent out a proposal for these parts. Refer to invoice [redacted]We expect the final invoice of $525.00 consisting of the labor from the 12/** service that has yet to be paid. This account is currently past due; therefore, we will not return to the location until the account is brought current. As mentioned, this is an older unit and the last time we were called to service this unit was on 10/**/20**. NY Athletic Club does not have a maintenance contract with us and we are unaware if this unit has been maintained in the past year.

Review: Went for smog test and advised check engine light was on and needed to be reset. They did test and car failed. Wanted to charge me $160 to examine car and find out what was wrong. They did test and knew it would fail. They then tried to charge me for repair work when all that was needed was the light to be reset. Took car to have light reset and looked at by dealer and was told that the car had no reason other than light on to fail. Brought it back and they refused to do a retest. They did not act in good faith. They should not be allowed to conduct business this way. They should not have done the test. They should have used their expertise to advise me of the outcome before charging me. They should refund the monies paid to them.Desired Settlement: Refund

Business

Response:

We will NOT give any type of refund! Mr. B[redacted] arrived at our shop 12/20/13 about 4:00pm. Mind you, his invoice (#34113) was date 9/13/13....so why would he complain 2 months later? Smog stations are NOT obligated to 'guess' or 'infer' whether a vehicle will pass or fail PRIOR to doing a smog check! When customers come in and ask for a smog check...we do EXACTLY that! Smog pass or fail is determined AFTER a smog check...regardless of check engine light being on at that time!

Mr. B[redacted] is incorrect at the check engine light repair as neither party would know what is/was needed until AFTER it has been diagnosed...which costs to inspect! This cost will be obtained by the servicing agent....doesn't matter whether we did it....or the dealer. Consequently...'just resetting the check engine light' is a guess most often...and a hopeful assumption (with validity) from consumers! There can be over 300+ related codes/malfunctions/etc for the check engine light...and reasons why a vehicle would fail smog, We are not obligated to 'guess' or prediagnose a situation...which would would be misleading! Also....anyone's vehicle can FAIL with the check engine light OFF...as there are many other reasons....so supports our theory of NOT guessing!

We do NOT offer a FREE retest...which is clearly indicated in our Pennysaver advertisement! There has NEVER been any sign posted of a FREE retest at this location! So Mr. B[redacted]'s views are incorrect...and this has nothing to do with 'good faith' or our way of 'conducting businees' as he stated! See here...IF we didn't do any diagnostics...and we did not...why would he come back for a retest??? IF this was true...we would have CLEARLY explained that we start from 'scratch' and regular price for smog check would incur. This never happened....as we have only 1 invoice on this vehicle!

During our discussion, Mr. B[redacted] claimed that the Firestone repair shop didn't reset something to do with his oil change...? That is not our issue nor responsibilty. IF a service reminder light is on....for oil change purposes...this would have NOTHING to do with the smog check. Unsure what his point was....but listened to his view. Consequently, Mr. B[redacted] 'threatened' to take action....which is and has been done with Revdex.com....and that is fine by me! He probably assumed I would just give him a refund WITHOUT validity!

In addition to the above items, there are MANY reasons why a vehicle can/will FAIL smog that have NOTHING to do with the check engine light being on that time! We do not guess or mislead the customers as we need to actually DO the smog check...and its necessary inspection of items...which are numerous! Bottom line is that the consumer is FULLY responsible for the smog test...and necessary repairs...retesting the vehicle...etc! As Mr. B[redacted] wrote: ...they should have used their expertise to advise me of the outcome before charging me... THIS IS NOT HOW THE SMOG CHECK WORLD WORKS! If so, we would be taking wild guesses on vehicles without valid reasoning, misleading the consumer, and would get fined by the Bureau of Automotive Repair!!!

After a few more attempts to get a refund...I explained again to Mr. B[redacted] that we did nothing wrong...and it is the consumer's responsibility...and we would not issue a refund! I also informed him that a few other customers failed smog the same day (11/20/13) which is NOT our fault...and that is how things went for them individually. Consumers hurt themselves when they opt to NOT diagnose their vehicles...hence delaying the smog check when it passes...and risking penalties from the State of California.

Our decision and valid response of not issuing a refund remains. Mr. B[redacted] has no intention of returning as a customer here. Giving him an unwarranted refund wouldn't change the situation as well.
