Revdex.com:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and reluctantly accept that they will attempt to reinstall the chimney cap, hopefully this time properly. While I may have been mistaken on the cost, I was going entirely from memory and our credit card statement, the rest of the statements made by this company are completely false and revisionist. We were never informed that they would have to wait until spring to reinstalll; we specifically asked if that was the case and were told no, they could do it any time.If we had been told this information up front, why would we have continued to call them? We did make a total of 4 phone calls, from November until January--- at which point we gave up calling because it did not appear that they cared at all about the problem and we were getting nowhere. Our friend spoke with them in February--not spring. And they did not tell her anything except that they did not want to rent a lift just for our reinstall. We received no phone call from them after she spoke with them like they claim either. It was only today, 4-21, that they called us, after this complaint was filed. They are obviously trying to imply that we are unreasonable and at fault, which is appallingly unprofessional. We coincidentally only received a phone call from them today--4-21-, after the complaint was filed.
Regards,
[redacted]

In April 2016 [redacted] [redacted] scheduled an appointment with our company to have chimney caps installed.  A certified technician from our company visited the home on 4-25-16 and installed one cap for $200.  Our technician informed the [redacted] that the other chimney would...

require a special-order multi-flue chimney cap at a cost of $940, not $1,500 as the [redacted] Revdex.com complaint indicates.  On that date the [redacted] accepted a proposal to have us order and install the special-order cap as well to have “Chimney Saver” water repellent applied to both their chimneys at a cost of $550.  The total cost of the accepted project was $1,490.  On May 4, 2016, the special order, multi-flue chimney cap was installed and the Chimney Saver was applied to both chimneys.  A representative of our company spoke with Mr. [redacted] when he called in November 2016 to inform us that the cap we installed had blown off.  Within days we dispatched a crew to try to replace the cap and they were unable to re-install the cap because they didn’t have a ladder that was tall enough.  The following week another crew was dispatched and despite having a taller ladder that crew was still unable to re-install the cap.  After these two attempts, Mr. [redacted] did call our office to check on the status.  He was informed that we would need to rent a lift to re-install the cap and that due to the winter weather conditions it was not something that we would be able to do safely and properly until spring.  The Revdex.com complaint indicates that the [redacted] called our office “every few weeks” which is not the case – including the initial two phone calls we received a total of three telephone calls from the Piechotta’s.  During the third phone call, [redacted] was again informed that we would not be able to address the matter until spring and during the winter months we did not receive any calls from them. As the complaint also indicates, in Spring of 2017 an “acquaintance” of the [redacted] did visit our office and share with us that the [redacted] were still waiting for their multi-flue cap to be re-installed.  That acquaintance was able to see that there was a note on our jobs board with the [redacted] address and the job description showing that the job was not forgotten, it was just not a job that could be completed safely and properly until weather conditions improved.  That day a call was placed and a message was left for [redacted] repeating that as soon as warm, dry weather arrived, we would be renting a lift and re-installing their cap.We sincerely apologize for the delay in re-installing the [redacted] chimney cap.  We will have the cap re-installed by April 28th.We sincerely apologize for the delay in re-installing the [redacted] chimney cap.  We will have the cap re-installed by April 28th.ll us why here...

Quality Fireplace & Chimney Service came out to do a quote for an issue I had with my chimney, and they also did a "scan." The total cost of the visit was about $180. Although others were offering free quotes, I wanted to do the scan to be sure I knew the specific issue. However, I regretted having them do that almost immediately partly due to the fact they simply used a collapsible chimney sweep extender with an iPhone strapped to it to do the sweep. There was no special technical equipment involved (perhaps an app to help connect the iPad that the man was holding and iPhone that was up the chimney). Although they did send me pictures, they were unable to provide a video to show exactly where the problem areas were. I emailed several times with questions regarding the quote and a receipt, but I had to call to eventually get a receipt for my credit card payment (and my questions never got answered).
After doing the "scan," the gentlemen had to talk to somebody on the phone for quite a while to come up with a quote for the repair. Perhaps that is the norm in this line of work, but all of the other quotes we got came right from the people that inspected the chimney. On its own, I don't think this is necessarily a negative reflection on how the estimates are done, but since I was paying for people to be out there, I did expect some more expertise. Had I received a free estimate, I probably would have been more forgiving of the need to call somebody else to figure out a quote. To be clear, if I had not been charged for the estimate, that alone would have been enough to turn my experience into at least a neutral one.
When all was said and done, I received a quote that was in the middle of the road in terms of cost. Most of the free estimates I received indicated the same exact problem as what Quality Fireplace & Chimney Service indicated. As such, I wholly believe I wasted $180. I could have spent that money, I'm sure, on a contraption that would have lifted my iPhone up the chimney and simply sent the video to companies for estimates.
The gentlemen were nice and respectful and cleaned up after themselves. When I called the office, I received friendly service twice. The other two times I would say the person that spoke with me was annoyed with my questions/feedback, but the longer we talked, the more friendly he became.
The company was willing to give me a credit towards the work if I went with them to perform the repair which I thought was nice. However, their quote was beat by a considerable amount, so it didn't make sense for me to go with them.
My wife was the one there for the quote, so she described what happened during the visit to me. In my review, the part about the extension piece, the iPhone and iPad they were using, and the fact they were nice and cleaned up after themselves, were all based on her description of how the visit went.

I have had Quality Fireplace service my last two homes (& three fireplaces), and have always had prompt & competent service with very fair prices. No attempt to "upcharge" like other companies, and I've always felt good about their work when they're finished. Good work, guys!

Review: Quality Fireplace installed 2 chimney liners into our existing masonry fireplaces last year by Quality Fireplace. One fireplace in the basement and one fireplace on the first floor. Upon further research they have made the liners to small for both fireplaces and is not up to code. The basement fireplace smoked out the house that the smoke would burn your eyes. They have added a fan to the top of the flue to help with the draft if. The upstairs fireplace also has draft problems. It is a double sided see through fireplace that has glass doors on it. [redacted] the owner, said since it had doors on it wasn't really a problem. However, ** (the person who measured and ordered the liners) told us we just have draft problems because our fireplace is just too big. So confused why they didn't give us a quote for a bigger liner!

[redacted] the owner of the company at first said he would fix it and that he has fired some of the employees who did the work. However, then when we talk or he comes to our home he says that we have to work with him and try alternative solutions to fixing the problem that ultimately has not worked. His last attempt to fix the problem was to remove the old damper (which has made it worse). However, after removing the old damper Quality Fireplace refused to have a fire to test the draft because the soot build up was so much (after 5 months of use) that he was afraid he would start a house fire. And [redacted] the owner insists that we pay for another cleaning from his company and will not fix our fireplaces to be in the same working order prior to them installing the new liners.

This past week we had another company give us a quote to fix the problem and indeed both liners installed are too small. The upstairs double sided fireplace chimney liner should be 18 inches (which is the size it was previously) and they made it 14 inches. The basement fireplace should have a liner that is 14 inches. The company that came out to inspect the basement fireplace said that Quality Fireplace intentionally did poor work to save time and money. For the basement fireplace that should have a 14 inch circular liner they took a 10 inch circular liner and shoved it down the chimney without removing any tiles and made it into a 8x8 inch square. This has now made the basement chimney liner almost half the size it should be but since the liner was shoved down the chimney the stainless liner is "scrunched" so the airflow for the draft doesn't have a straight surface to go up. [redacted] from Quality Fireplace did install a fan on top of the chimney to help with the draft. However, the electrical work was put down an old flu (that was previously properly closed up) where our old water heater used to exhaust out of. With now the addition of the fan we are letting out so much heat that when you are top of the roof you can feel all of the hot air going out of our chimney.Desired Settlement: I have given Quality Fireplace many chances to fix our fireplaces and they refuse. I am getting an estimate to have our fireplaces in the same working order as they were previously or as they should be and would like this to be at Quality Fireplace expense.

Business

Response:

Our company did indeed install 2 liners into Ms. [redacted] fireplaces. Since the cost to remove all the cracked flue tiles and install new stainless steel wrapped liners would cost double what we did, she chose to go with the cheaper option and have smaller liners installed. Since the downstairs fireplace smoked too much with the smaller liner, we installed a vent fan at our expense to rectify the draft problem. This cost us over $2000 to do and we absorbed the expense even though she chose the cheaper option of keeping the tiles intact. Afterward she claimed that the upstairs fireplace was not drafting as well as it had. We came out to inspect and determined that the damper was restricting the draft and that it needed to be swept to eliminate excessive creosote buildup. She claimed that she already paid to have this done by us and we should do it again for free. I showed her the invoice proving that she only paid for the downstairs fireplace to be cleaned and NOT the upper. In all fairness I requested she pay for a chimney sweep to be performed on the upper and she changed her story to we should cover it anyway. I stated that significant build up can and will restrict the draft and we need to do that and she refused. She approved the wiring method we used when installing the fan since the alternative would be to go around the roof and down the side of the house. With or without a fan, anyone standing on a roof will feel heat coming out of a chimney with a fire burning in its fireplace. I also offered to install a smoke guard in the fireplace opening to help improve the ratio required for proper draft since a smaller liner will work with a smaller fireplace opening and she refused that as well. Now she wants me to pay for the more expensive option of removing everything while I saved her the expense in the first place! We have been in business for over 30 years and have a clear record. I will be happy to assist Ms. Billmyer in this matter, but cannot continue to work for her for free.
