Quantum Entries Reviews (1)

Before I start my rant about how poorly this door was installed I want to say the door itself is OK (not perfect). I would give the door at least a 7 and the install a BIG FAT ZERO.
We bought an expensive house in an expensive area and the house had a hand crafted steel entry door. We did not know who made it, but were less than satisfied with the installation. Not knowing who made/installed this custom door we kept our mouths shut and lived with it.
That was until 3 MONTHS AGO! A friend of mine was browsing Quantum Entries photo gallery and as he was clicking on the pics I notice a VERY familiar front entry! I asked him to back up to take another look and sure enough it was MY FRONT ENTRY! I thought to myself what LOUSY installers/contractors they have. The door itself is just fine, but the install job looks like a amateur did it. The entire door shakes and wobbles when you push on it. Now, the house was built around Dec. 2006 and we purchased it in May 2008 (only 18 months old). The first thing we noticed was the HUGE gaps between the structure of the house and the door frame. It was too large for mortar to fill in the gaps. The second thing we noticed was no door bell (SERIOUSLY)! The electricians ran wires to the door and installed the chimes, but there was no door bell button/switch installed (more on this later). This should have been done either by the electrician or by the door installer and neither did it. So, our 4500 sf UPSCALE house had no door bell. I had to install a wireless POC from [redacted].
Finally, this month (April 2015), we are doing some upgrades that involve the doors, floors, and walls. It was FINALLY time to reveal the install of this front door from behind the sheetrock and door trim. Immediately upon removing the door trim you see DAYLIGHT! There is no caulk, no mortar, no spray foam, no gap-fill, and/or NO INSULATION between the door frame and the structure of the house. No shims were used to square the door up. The only thing holding this entire door frame up is 4 lag bolts that are screwed into flimsy 2x4's (no wonder the entire door shakes). BUT, still the most mind blowing thing is that I can see my neighbor's yard across the street after removing the door trim on the inside of the door. Nothing else was removed! Just by removing the interior trim from around the door I can see my neighbors yard across the street. Now to the lag bolts...... I can not believe what I saw. They screwed 5/16" (maybe 3/8") lag bolts into 2x4's with NO PILOT HOLES so the freaking 2x4's split!!! I have no license for construction and even I know better than this. In order for lag bolts to be able to screw in and not split the wood, the wood (pine in this case) MUST be a 4"x4"!! Even then you are playing Russian Roulette by not pre drilling a pilot hole. Even with OAK a pilot hole is required or you will break the bolt off after screwing it in about 1". What's more disappointing is that this HUGE 500+ pound French Style Double Entry Door is held in place by 4 lag bolts. Upon visiting Quantum's website and viewing some of their doors I notice ALL of their doors are held in place by just 4 bolts. This is fine if you have a secondary retaining system like spray foam or concrete/mortar that acts like an adhesive that actually supports the door frame all the way around the entire door frame. There's literally nothing else holding this door in place. It shakes, it rattles, and it whistles in the wind. You can feel a draft ALL THE WAY AROUND this door!! After removing the door trim I now understand why..... I CAN SEE MY NEIGHBOR'S YARD ACROSS THE STREET! If you can see through it then wind will definitely blow through it.
So, we get to add DOOR REINSTALL (or total replacement) to the list of upgrades to this house. That was not expected. These doors are supposed to be "BUILT FOR LIFE" and kick-in-proof. We don't even use the front door for anything and after just 9 years it needs renovation/replacing(we don't even have kids). The contractor doing the demo even shook his head in disbelief. He had seen Quantum Doors before in houses he had worked on but had never actually looked behind the trim and sheetrock to witness the actual installation quality. He was appalled. He said he would never use Quantum Doors after seeing this install.
