R. Harward Construction Reviews (1)

The Company painted portions of our home last year for $5,610, which is peeling on all trim and doors. Company is unresponsive on repair and refund.[redacted] came to our home after we purchased it to provide an estimate for some interior painting. We agreed on the amount quoted and the service was performed within the desired timeframe.A week after we moved into the home, I sent an email to the Company noting the following:"The paint is actually peeling in some spots now up on the second floor. We have also found that it rubs off much easier than anything else that we've had before. We'll show this to the painter when he arrives. A little more worried about it than I was before but we'll talk with the painter here. Did he only apply one coat of paint? Many spots, particularly the white, seem to be applied very lightly."The painter came out and touched up a few places. However, he disclaimed responsibility for the peeling and left before remedying all of the areas that we had indicated to him. While it was bad service, we felt we could live with it.However, the problem continued to get worse and we sent the following email to the company on September 10, 2014:I had your company paint two floors of my home in June ([redacted]) and noticed some problems with it shortly after I remitted the full amount of the invoice. Those problems have continued to get worse and I'm wondering what you can do to remedy the problem. The paint was clearly applied to all doors and trim without prepping the surface and so it peels off. This is also the case with one of the walls in my daughter's bedroom where a desk was removed from the wall. Please advise what actions you can take to remedy this. You previously sent the painter back out who did not speak English and was either unable or unwilling to fix the problem.[redacted] came back out on 9/19/14 and said that they would remedy the problem if I would be patient.I did not hear anything for 2 months so I emailed him on 11/4/2014 and asked for an update. They responded that they were working with [redacted] to come and inspect the paint. After a month of not getting that scheduled, I sent the following email:Please respond to what you are actively doing to resolve our situation. We've grown tired of the slow responses and the apparent indifference to peeling paint all over our home. As I see it...there are three options:1) Sand down all of the baseboards and doors and repaint.2) Replace all of the baseboards and doors.3) Do nothing and settle monetarily. Please let me know which of these options you are taking so I know. You have already been to the home to assess the damage so I don't know what else there is to decide about here. The [redacted] rep came out and gave her opinion that the paint was not applied correctly (believed that latex paint was placed on oil-based paint without adequate prep). [redacted], upon learning this, said he would send the painter to remedy. After 4 more months of avoiding me, I was finally able to schedule the painter to come on April 8. It didn't go well. This was described in the following email that I sent to the Company on April 10.Your guys showed up and told me that they didn't need to sand and that they could just paint over the prior job with an oil based paint. I knew this was wrong but he insisted that he had done this before and that it was right. After they started, I researched online and confirmed that it was not going to solve the problem. I then called [redacted] in Carrboro and they also told me that this would not solve the problem and that the old layer of paint had to be removed. So, I told them to stop after they did the dining room and entry way. It now looks worse than ever as they used a high gloss paint and you can still see all the areas where the paint had peeled off. Not to mention, the glossy touch-ups don't match the rest of their prior work. It really is hard for me to believe that this is the end product. The company has made two half-hearted attempts over more than 9 months to only make the problem worse. Desired SettlementAfter my last email, [redacted] offered to refund $1,500 and indicated that he would place a check in the mail on April 13, 2015. While I know this is not sufficient to cover the damage, I agreed so that I would not have to deal with him any longer. However, it is now a month later and the check has not come.At this point, I am unwilling to settle for the $1,500 that I had previously agreed to as [redacted] has again broken his word. Rather, I am requesting that 50% of the amount paid for the service ($2,805) be refunded. I believe it will cost at least this amount (and likely more) to have somebody sand and repaint the trim and doors that were impacted. I am happy to provide some quotes to further substantiate this claim if necessary. If not settled, I plan to file claim in small claims court.
