R. L. Carter Contracting Reviews (2)

Review: This is a copy of a review I posted on his web site. He has since taken the site down.[redacted] These are the things I learned about Carter Contracting when I moved into the house this company built for me.1. DO NOT GIVE HIM ANY MONEY UP FRONT without a performance bond. Agree on a total price for the job and include that in the contract.2. Employ a draftsman or architect to draw detailed plans. This is a must if you use this company.3. Under no circumstances use this company without hiring a professional (your architect would be best) to "watch" your job. If you use this company you must do this.4. You absolutely must have a lawyer create a contract stating, among other things, a time table for each segment of the job and a FIRM completion date.5. Have a materials list made by one of the home improvement companies ([redacted]) and balance this against the materials you are asked to pay for.6. I did not do any of this and to date I have spent $40,000.00 completing and correcting problems with the house this company built for me. You may extrapolate the reasons for my posting this and go from there or I will be happy to enumerate the issues that prompted the review. EX. Material missing. Porch out of square 5" in 10 feet. Ceiling out of level as much as 2" in places. Not a square corner in the building. Siding not fastened to house...had to hire a carpenter to completely re-nail the siding to the house. Electrical installation incomplete. Metal roofing installed incorrectly. Attic fans not connected. Insulation installed incorrectly. Painter did not caulk any of the siding joints. Windows not caulked correctly. Toilets installed incorrectly.....10 inches from the back walls on 4 of them. I have more than 30 pictures if you are interested. Thanks for having this forum for me. [redacted]Desired Settlement: Nothing can be done. I have corrected all of the problems that are correctable without a rebuild. My interest in contacting you is to give you this information and let you decide the appropriate action. Thank you. [redacted]

Review: I hired Roy Carter starting in December, 2013, to do renovations on a home I purchased on 12/6/13. The first payment of $4,000 was made to him on 12/16/13. From that date to 4/19/14, I paid him a total of $29,800. It is now June 2015 and the work is far from completion. Additionally, there are numerous problems with some of what has been done. Roy has promised me many times that he would complete the work contracted for, as well as the repairs. I've been in the position of constantly nagging him to come here and living with half finished projects all over the house for over a year. He is not responding to my calls wherein I ask for him to finish what I paid him to do, and reimburse me for work I have cancelled because I'm sick of waiting and his work is sloppy. Two examples: In January last year I asked him to repair the gutters which were leaking. He tried applying a sealant which did nothing. He referred the work to [redacted] and they came in April to replace the gutters. Roy was to pay that company directly with money I had given him for work consequently cancelled. The cost of $1,500 was to include guards on half the gutters. I don't have them and now they are clogged and water pours right against the house when it rains. I'm also wary of the quality of this company's work. So now I'm waiting for all this to be resolved while my foundation rots.Back in 2013 Roy said he could refinish my wooden floors. I therefore kept all my furniture and stuff in storage. Finally in May 2014 he came with his assistant who proceeded to sand the floor on his hands and knees with an orbital sander! I told him that wasn't going to cut it. He said he'd be back w/ a rented machine but by June it hadn't happened. I hired another company to do the work and Roy agreed to reimburse me.Desired Settlement: At this point I would like to be reimbursed for jobs paid for and not started and receive credit for work I did myself or that I paid someone else to do. I would like to hire a different contractor to complete the jobs started as well as make the necessary repairs to Roy's work.Unfortunately I do not have written contracts, itemizations or receipts for most of the payments (although I paid primarily with checks). To date he has reimbursed me $1,150.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution would be satisfactory to me. I will wait for the business to perform this action and, if it does, will consider this complaint resolved.
