September 6, 2017R&S was hired to remove and replace existing driveway approximate 1580sf and widen driveway an additional 20'x21'There was an existing downspout drain that needed to be extended an additional 20' + or -to accommodate the widening of the driveway, which was completed by using 4"HDPE pipe which matched existing pipe and moved existing drain to said locationThe drain was put in by excavating a hole, placing filter fabric and 3/4" clean stone around drain as it was beforeThe ground in this location is made up of mostly clay soil*** *** contacted our office and showed her concerns about the water not drainingOne of the owners proceeded to go out and review the situation concerning the driveway and the drainAt his arrival, there was a hardscape contractor installing a rear patio and front service walkHe had a mid-size tractor for excavating which was driven all over the driveway and over the 4" pipe areaThe asphalt driveway only had dirty tire tracks on it from the tractor but no visible stones or divotsThe asphalt driveway was also flush and level with the garage floor as it should beAt this time, he knocked on the door and left a business card in the door so that the owner could contact himAfter several weeks the homeowner did call and said that the hardscape contractor looked at the drainage pipe and said that there was nothing wrong with it, at which time he told her we were very busy and would have someone go out to look at the drain to see if anything could be done, and at that time explained that there was nothing visibly wrong with the driveway and she asked for us to refer a seal coating contractorAll work completed with the asphalt driveway and extending the existing drain was completed as per industry's standardsThe reason for the existing drain not draining is due to poor soil conditions (clay soil)On 9/5/R&S went out to try to improve the drainage situation with the Owner's approvalThe existing drain was removed, all mud, stone and fabric were removed and hand excavated to an approxdepth of 3'x3' at which time even at this depth there is still a clay based soil which does not allow for much percolationWe used an electric shovel to try and loosen the soil at the bottom of the pit to improve percolationAt which time new filter fabric was installed along with 3/4" clean stone, and drain resetThere is nothing further that can be completed, in enlarging the stone pit area, we are hoping for more volume storage and any excess water should rise and dissipate onto ground levelWe have given the owner the name of a very reputable seal coater as she requestedWe have been in communication by text and have requested her to call by phone so all work completed can be explained to herI believe we have done everything in our power to satisfy the drainage situation but can not control the soil conditions that are below the drain or rate of percolation.Sincerely,Stephen B
