When I arrived at ** *** house due to a water issue I did a full inspection of the furnace and the humidifier to find the leak. This process also includes a safety and operational check of the furnace. this is something we do to every furnace we look at. during that process
we found that the furnace had an issue in the secondary heat exchanger, this was found by means of combustion analsys which is the standard technique for checking heat exchangers. this test resulted in 6.7%oand 411ppm co on medium fire. After finding these results we cleaned the burners and set confirmed that the gas pressure, specifically on medium fire was within factory specifications, 1.4"wc. this adjustment was in an attempt to eliminate dirty burners and gas pressure as causes of the problematic combustion numbers. the system was re checked without change in the result. I then informed ** *** of what I found, I also informed him that there is a warranty on that heat exchanger and that we would not be able to get to it for a while, so I suggested that he call another contractor to do the work and I suggested a company to which I have no affiliation but have heard good things about. I suggested that he turn the furnace off because there was a RISK of carbon monoxide getting into the house due to the heat exchanger issue. He was billed $90(our minimum service call). At that time I left him with a card and said that he could call with any questions, I also said he could take a copy of my notes if that helps the other company. He was understandably rather upset so I tried to explain everything to him a couple of different ways before we left. Later he called me and told me that we had drilled a hole and that is where the co is coming from. It is true that we drilled a hole in the vent, we did this to sample the exhaust gasses with our combustion analyzer. We did, unfortunately, neglect to seal that hole back up which we usually do with a dab of silicone. Because of this he said he would put a stop payment on the check to which I agreed and that is the last I heard from him. If the remaining $is the goal then I can send a check. I do, however, recommend that he get the furnace checked out by a reputable company that uses modern equipment to diagnose furnaces.thank you,*** ***R & S Heating and Cooling, Inc
