The customer brought their 2007 BMW 335i into our shop with the complaint that the engine was misfiring badly and running poorly in general. We recalled that this customer came by the shop about 7 or 8 months previous to this, also complaining about his car not running smoothly and that time we had...

told him that it is possible he had a problem with the valve cover and that the car should be checked out, but the customer said they did not want to service the car at that point, regardless of the fact they we mentioned it could lead to other problems down the road. When the customer came in this time (11/2015) we diagnosed the engine manually and via our BMW Diagnostic computer and tools. We were able to see that there was indeed a misfire problem as well as other problem codes (for which we provided the customer with a full printout of for their records). We determined that the cause of the vehicle's misfire and damage was a bad valve cover leak that had been going for a long period of time. The unaddressed leak had led to oil in many parts of the engine as well as damaging the coils. We cleaned up all the leaked oil - which had gotten its way into many areas and parts - and replaced the valve cover with a new valve cover, as well as a new kit (of seals ad gasket), new antifreeze, a new expansion tank cap and new seals for the vanos. (These new parts as well as all new parts we install are always fully warrantied). We alerted the customer to the fact that the coils had been damaged as well but the customer stated that they did not want to replace the coils, or have any other work done on his vehicle. We informed him that the check engine light would likely return as a result of the coils not being replaced. Our charge for parts were precisely the list prices per the manufacturer and distributors. The labor costs charged were based precisely on the industry standard "All Data" labor time rates for the work done and not a . minute or a penny more. This was a completely "by the book" job and everything stated in the bill is exactly what was done. The customer was informed accordingly before, during, and after the job, as to the current problems and unresolved problems that would also need to be addressed (including the vanos and coils). He was also provided with all the error codes that showed before and after our work was complete. We have been servicing cars in the area for over 40 years and commit to every job with the same high standard of professionalism and code of ethics. The work we do is warrantied as are the new parts. Unrelated and/or additional needed work (for which there can often be considering the complexity of the workings of automobiles in general) are separate issues for which additional labor and parts may be needed, as we believe was (and informed the client) in this case. For this job, we provided all proper information, services and costs to the customer. As in every case, we always inform the customer of any additional issues we have found in the process of our work and then ask them if they would like for us to provide any of the additional work and parts - giving the customer final say over what work is or isn't done. After relaying all information to the customer in this case, he told us he did not want any additional work done on the car and therefore we respected his wishes and returned his car charging him only for the work completed, as detailed on his invoice. [redacted] Manager
