Review: I am no longer teaching at Ohio State University and I have asked to have my name removed. I have not taught there since 2009. I have no desire to be listed on their website at all, but they refuse to respond. I want my name, which is improperly listed as "[redacted]," removed and all of the comments deleted. I can care less that the ratings are more positive than negative. I am no longer at Ohio State, but this company refuses to take my requests seriously.Desired Settlement: I want my name completely removed from their website.

Review: To Whom It May Concern:

My name is [redacted] (who was a Part-Time Rutgers University Professor between 2011 - 2014) and there are a number of ratings and comments made about me at Rate My Professor that violate their own guideline: that comments are supposed to assess my professional abilities; the aforementioned comments in no way describe me accurately or assess my teaching abilities. I am no longer teaching at Rutgers University and these comments are both degrading and inaccurate.Desired Settlement: Please contact this business and have them take these comments down and remove my name from their site.

Review: I have tried contacting this business by phone concerning a rating on their website that does not follow their stated guidelines, but am unable to get in contact with a person and have never received a call back after leaving a message. There website states that they will remove any rating that does not follow their guidelines, which includes speaking to the instructor's teaching abilities, however, this website has failed to either address my concern (explaining why they believe it should remain posted on their website) or remove the comment in question.Desired Settlement: A phone call or email addressing my concern and/or removal of the comment in question.

Review: To Whom It May Concern:

My complaint stems from this company’s inability, and actual unwillingness, to address my questions and concerns. I have tried to contact this company regarding comments posted on the website, but my issues have yet to be addressed.

This website has two comments (“reviews”) of my teaching posted. See: [redacted]. One of the reviews does not list a specific course number. This comment was also posted in March, which is in the middle of the semester, so it is further unclear which course the student is evaluating. For example, is it a past course, or is it a course that the student is current enrolled in? If the latter is the case, then I definitely should not be evaluated before the end of a semester. I believe that this comment clearly violates the site guidelines (see below). The guidelines state that the comments “should only be posted by users who have taken a class from the professor,” and that commenters should not “Input false course or section codes.” Seeing as a specific course has not been identified, nor does this post have an appropriate date, the comment plainly violates both of these basic guidelines.

Both comments in question also violate additional site guidelines. The site guidelines state the following:

“Do not state your opinion as fact;”

“negative comments that still offer constructive criticism are useful. Comments that bash a professor on a personal level are not;”

“Submit helpful comments that mention a professor's ability to teach and/or communicate effectively, course load, type of course work and course topics.”

The comments posted on the website read:

“She just reads off of her papers and we have to try to follow along, some of her information is contradictory. In-Class debates are a pain. Be wary of the final project...she is SUPER picky.”

“Extremely boring. Class is very hard to sit through. Usually fair on assignments, sometimes assigns really pointless things though.”

These comments are not “helpful” or “factual,” they do not offer “constructive criticism,” nor are they reflective of the opinions of the majority of students in the class, as evidenced by official university course evaluations. Moreover, the company states that it has the right to remove comments that are “inappropriate, libelous, defamatory, harmful, harassing, intimidating, threatening, hateful, objectionable, or abusive.” I believe that these comments are all of the above. Because these comments are of questionable validity and/or merit, I believe it is the company’s responsibility to remove them.

I have tried to contact this company several times about this issue and have only received a form letter stating that the comments were within the site’s guidelines. When I raised specific questions about the validity of the comments, the company refused to address my questions and reverted to the form letter response. Please see included email correspondences below, which begin on August [redacted] and continue through the rest of August. I also tried to contact this company by telephone, but the call automatically goes to a voicemail system. I left a message, following their specific instructions, and, rather than calling me back, they responded via email (the same form letter I had received previously). When I asked via email if I could speak to someone on the telephone, I received no response. I emailed FOUR times before getting another form letter, this one including the phone number I had used to contact the company previously. In my emails, I had specifically asked for a phone number (and/or email) that I could use to actually speak with someone who could listen to and address my concerns. As you can see from the email correspondences, it appears as though the company does not actually read the content of the email before responding. I have brought up several issues (including that I had surgery during one of the classes and was not entirely responsible for teaching that class, the fact that the two online evaluations do not match up with course evaluations of my teaching abilities, and the absence of an actual course number).

In summary, the two posts are offensive, unfair, and inaccurate. They should not appear online for everyone in the world to see/read, which ultimately impacts my reputation, career, and mental well-being. I would like this company to remove these comments from the website and to be held accountable for their lack of proper professional communication. I believe that I have made clear, logical, and informed reasons for this request.

Thank you for your time,

[redacted], [redacted].

Ratemyprofessor.com Guidelines

1. Professor ratings should only be posted by users who have taken a class from the professor or who are currently taking a class with the professor.

2. Remember that negative comments that still offer constructive criticism are useful. Comments that bash a professor on a personal level are not; and

3. Submit helpful comments that mention a professor's ability to teach and/or communicate effectively, course load, type of course work and course topics.

DO NOT:

• Use "definitive" language, (e.g., "always","never","etc.");

• Post a rating if you have not taken a class with the professor;

• Post a rating if you have not enrolled and attended a class at the specific college or university;

• Input false course or section codes;

The Site reserves the right to remove any comments deemed as inappropriate, libelous, defamatory, indecent, vulgar or obscene, pornographic, sexually explicit or sexually suggestive, racially, culturally, or ethnically offensive, harmful, harassing, intimidating, threatening, hateful, objectionable, discriminatory, or abusive.

Subject: RE: [RMPSUPPORT #[redacted]]: Report unacceptable ratings on a professor profile

I have tried calling - I can never reach anyone. By mail will not satisfy my desire to TALK to someone.

Actually, the reviews are not in line with your guidelines, and I'd like to point out how - but I need to be able to TALK to someone.

Please provide me with a contact person's name and direct communication line.

Also, please avoid sending me the exact same form letter that you have sent nearly a dozen times now. I would appreciate not being treated like an it.

Please remove the ratings for [redacted].

1) for the course that I was technically listed as an instructor but did not actually teach most of the class, I should not have been reviewed ([redacted]) - see lengthy explanations and email correspondences below

2) there is a class with no ACTUAL name (listed as HDFS, which is not a course) that was written during March - which is not at the end of a semester, nor is it clear what that class was. This should also be removed for being incomplete and inaccurate.

I would like these issues addressed satisfactorily, rather than the standard form email saying the reviews meet the site's guidelines. I have yet to have a proper response - either via phone or email.

You're REALLY still not READING what I wrote. I NEVER expressed my opinion of how the class was. Rather, I said that STUDENTS' opinions were positive. Also, please address the following:

1) for the course that I was technically listed as an instructor but did not actually teach most of the class, why should I be reviewed? ([redacted])

2) why does the class with no ACTUAL name (listed as HDFS) get to remain, when it is not clear what that course actually was?

This is frustrating, as you do not actually respond to my questions, nor do you answer your phone. Instead, you return voicemails by email saying the exact same message I have gotten at least three times. I would like to SPEAK with someone who can ACTUALLY address my concerns without dismissing them. I would STILL LIKE THESE COMMENTS TO BE REMOVED.

Hello [redacted],

Students are allowed voice their opinions regarding their experiences in each class as long as it coincides with the Site Guidelines and is in no way threatening or can be considered harassment. A students' opinion of a class may differ from the instructors opinion at times and that is perfectly acceptable within the specified guidelines for this Site.

Please stop sending me this form letter and actually READ what I write.

What does it take to remove these comments? I can send in my course evaluations, for ALL my courses, as they are positive. These "comments" are the opinion of a minority of students and ultimately punish me (because they likely earned a poor grade). That is not fair.

In addition, although I may have been listed as instructor for the one course, I was out for a majority of the class due to SURGERY AND a MISCARRIAGE. Thank you for humiliating me - you certainly don't need to know my personal life. I find this very offensive. Lastly, what about the course that is simply listed as "HDFS" - what is that supposed to be and why should that remain?

They may be consistent with whatever guidelines you have, but I did NOT teach the course; thus, the review is not accurate. If I didn't teach a particular course, how can I be rated on it? Please take the reviews down, as they represent a LIE.

Your website makes it unclear how to "flag" a comment.

That being said, these reviews still should be removed. First, one student left a comment for an "HDFS" class - that is not specific - which one? I teach in the HDFS department, and the comments are not clear. Second, the other student left a comment for "[redacted]" when in fact I DID NOT TEACH THAT COURSE.

Thus, please REMOVE these comments.

Response:

The company has responded to me by email and has removed the two questionable comments on their website. This was a satisfactory solution to me.

Sincerely,

Review: I am a Professor of English and believe that a student (who is emotionally challenged as a result of several outbursts in my course, English [redacted], [redacted]), has written six (6) negative reviews of courses that she has never taken with me.

Her rants are emotional, repetitious, and inflammatory, and should be removed from RMP site, as she is presenting false information. If she wants to write a review of English [redacted], she is entitled to do so, but she should not be allowed to write about courses she has never taken simply because she wanted to avoid detection. I have written a letter to her and reported her to university administrators. They advised me to ignore RMP site, but I believe that my reputation is a stake here.Desired Settlement: Rate My Professor:

I am requesting that RMP will remove six (6) evaluations by the student [redacted]. I am a professor of English and Women's Studies at the University of [redacted]. [redacted] was a student in my English 368 course, American Minority Women Writers. She had several emotional outbursts in my class and took to this site in October and November 2015, and most recently on January ** and January **, 2016. The problem is that she is writing about courses that she has never taken with me, primarily English [redacted] and English [redacted]. English [redacted] does not exist. She did this, I believe, to initially avoid detection while a student in English [redacted]. Her rants are essentially repetitious--"[redacted]" type rants. In December, I reported her to the authorities at the university, and they advised me to just ignore the RMP site as many professors do because of its dubious reputation, largely as result of the anonymity of students writing anything that they desire. However, [redacted] is attempting to persuade students not to take my courses, and she is trying to negatively impact my reputation. Since students are logically expected to write a review of only the courses they have taken with a professor, I believe [redacted] is violating the intent of the site.

If RMP can read her evaluations in Late October and November 2015, and on January ** and [redacted] and reach the conclusion that they are redundant and in violation of the intent of the site, I wish to have her reviews removed from courses she has never taken with me. [redacted]
