Hey Doc how about giving someone a referral to the next best program when you can not help

Good program even though my experience was largely negative. The communication between the Doc. clinical staff, and myself was confusing, inconsistent, and in the end intentionally misleading. I completed most of the program with less than five sessions needed to "graduate" from the program when I was informed by staff, the co-founder of the program, who was also my treating psychiatrist that I was not progressing in treatment and that I would not benefit from their help. This assessment came after being told the exact opposite. [redacted]who was our clinician at that time, stated clearly that I was doing well and meeting treatment goals. This was made clear to me individually and in our groups. My family and friends were also surprised by this after being in the program that long. Why it took so long especially after receiving my insurance and co-payments for a very substantial part of the program will always be a mystery. As my treating psychiatrist he also informed me he could not help. In addition to not progressing I was told that my insurance would not cover anymore treatment at Recovery Road. This was not really an insurance issue but an assessment issue made predominately by the doctor as evidenced by the positive feedback given by [redacted]. To say my insurance would not cover treatment was intentionally misleading. They would and did cover treatment at another program because it was assessed by the doctor as being necessary. Blame the insurance? This confused [redacted]as well.

The Doc. believed there was a personality disorder(at least that is what I was told) that made the program and his ability to help me not possible. " I can not help you. You can still see me but there is nothing more I can do." No psychiatrist, family, friends, or co-workers(mental health professionals) suspected this. My history included stable employment and stable relationships. To be fair treating someone with a dual-diagnosis and a life long medical condition is difficult but 'giving up' on treatment because of a personality disorder(only "seen" by this Doc no one else) seems harsh. Personality disorders are mental health issues and treatable especially when patients recognize they need help.

I have not used in over 5yrs in large part because I did get the help I needed. Fortunately no other doctor or therapist believed that I had a personality disorder precluded me from dual-diagnosis treatment. This is important! I worked professionally with adults and children with substance and mental health issues and made many referrals to services that address these issues. I WOULD RECOMMEND this program. Because of [redacted]and the group I was in I did get some support that facilitated further recovery in another program. My experience is not typical. The program and my psychiatrist have and will help many. I recommend however with a strong warning: Doctors don't always get it right. In the case of the co-founder and my treating psychiatrist it was unfortunately ego and arrogance that "colored" his assessment. These traits were acknowledged by him, he was a former surgeon as he noted once in group. Not all programs and doctors work for everyone. A little humility and more forthright communication however would have gone far. It was close to devastating being told they not help me. Fortunately another program and two other psychiatrist disagreed. If you are told you can not be helped by this doctor or program get a second opinion! They have a good program but don't let his arrogance could be an obstacle in your recovery. Do not give up even if they believe you are not helped able.
