R.E.M. Construction Reviews (1)

We hired R.E.Mearly in to remodel a sunroom (doors (entry and storm) and windows (7), ceiling, paneling, vinyl siding, miscellaneous electric, etc.) This project was estimated to take weeksOverall we found R.E.Mto be dishonest, dishonorable and dangerous
When R.E.Minstalled the sunroom ceiling boards wrong, they blamed the supplier for delivering the wrong boardsWhen they installed the wrong cabinet they blamed the supplier for sending the wrong cabinet When the project continued to run over time they blamed the weather and "emergencies." When the storm doors didn't close correctly, they blamed the door supplierWhen there was no one else to blame, R.E.Mblamed us for "never being happy" and "making changes."
The ceiling was to be reverse tongue and grove to match the rest of our houseR.E.Minstalled the boards with the "v" down and instead of blind nailing the boards in the tongue shoulder so there would be no visible nail holes they nailed it up on the visible face
Because R.E.Minstalled a pull down attic ladder wrong, they cut nearly two inches of the ceiling boards away from the hinge side to allow the ladder to swing down, creating a very large and unsightly gap on the ceilingThe "fix" presented by R.E.M.'s owner was to get a push broom head, paint it white to match the ceiling and install it in the gap they had cut out of the ceiling
When R.E.Mspray painted the walls and ceiling, they didn't clean up the sawdust from the roomWhen they spray painted the room, the sawdust from the floor and exposed ledges was blown into the paint and deposited on the wallsSome areas were like a cheese grater while all other areas were the texture of course sandpaperWhen we brought this to R.E.M.'s attention, their response was, "wow that is really rough...there is a lot of dust in there." When we told them it was unacceptable and that we wanted them to sand and repaint the walls, they responded, "sanding wasn't part of the contract and if you want to repaint it, there is enough paint left over for you to do it."
When they installed the new matched entry and storm doors, the storm doors would not close properlyR.E.Mwanted to grind the edges of the doors so they would close
R.E.Mwas to install a mechanical closet, then the rear door, allow space for two light switches and then, based on the remaining wall space, order and install an appropriately sized window that would fit in the remaining spaceInstead, R.E.Mordered the window without accounting for the space availableWhen the window size was questioned, R.E.Mtold the supplier "I'll make it fit."
It didn't fitThe mechanical closet was too shallow for the washer and dryer to fit properly and allow the doors to closeThey damaged the unit as well as the dryer vent and water lines by shoved the unit into the space and still they insisted it would workAfter weeks of telling R.E.Mit would not fit and showing them repeatedly that it wouldn't, the owner of R.E.Mstated, "I've already built the closet once" and refused to rebuild it
Despite R.E.Mtelling us they obtained an electrical permit, we discovered they did notThey illegally cut off the tamper tag to the electric meter and did not inform the electric company
They installed an outdoor receptacle by cutting a square out of the siding and fibrous insulation and installed the receptacle leaving one quarter inch of the wire exposed and touching the fibrous insulation - without a box, as required
When installing the soffits, R.E.Mused a two inch hole saw to drill holes but most of the two inch plugs were either left in place or were drilled over roof rafters so the vents could not workThey also failed to pull the attic insulation back to allow the vents to work properly
There were many more examples of poor quality and corner cutting by R.E.Mwe discovered once they left, but they are too numerous to list
We tried very much to work with R.E.M., we made concessions to keep the project moving, we made early payments based on what turned out to be dishonest statements by R.E.Mand moreWhen we stopped making concessions and holding R.E.Mto their promises, we and others were blamed and they simply refused to do what they were hired to do
We gave them frequent opportunities to correct deficiencies and to provide us what we asked for and had paid them forDespite stopping payment and providing R.E.Ma detailed explanation of the quality and production issues, they continued to blame us and simply refused to do what they promised
