Run, Run away from this mechanic as fast as you can. Back on Aug.1st I broke down in Yuma on my way to San Diego. My home is in Albuquerque, NM. I had no internet service so my friend in Phoenix found Richards shop and based on the reviews I brought my truck to his shop. I broke down right by the inspection station with a lot of smoke pouring out of my truck. I stopped immediately, called for the tow and brought it to Richards. After talking to Richard, he said it would take 2 weeks to complete repairs and my estimate was $1700.00, so I rented a car and headed home to Albuquerque. In 2 weeks I returned, only to find out the heads have not yet come back from the machine shop. I told him to call me when my car was done. I returned home via Greyhound. Over the next month I called periodically to check on my truck and would hear a series of excuses such as it was only him and another mechanic, heads still not back, got the wrong water pump, short on help, etc., etc. Finally I called him and said I would be there on Sept.22, which I was, and my truck better be ready. When I arrived at the shop, Richard said "Oh no, you said the 24th." So I waited until Friday, 3 days later to pick up my truck. When I paid the bill my est. of $1700.00 went up to $2100.00. The excuse was the shop charged $900 for heads and they needed to replace the bolt because the new heads didn't line up. Not being a mechanic the cost seemed high and the head not lining up didn't seem right but by this time all I wanted was my truck and to get home. I paid the bill and off I went, only to get down the road practically at the same spot and the car temp went hot and no power. So back to Richards I took the truck. I had to leave it because it was going to again take sometime to break it down and fix. Back on Greyhound I go to wait another month to Oct 20th to finally pick up my truck.Come to find out my original water pump did not cause the original break down. It was my oil pump. Now why didn't he figure that out the first time??? When I got the truck at first it ran fine in the city. Once I got on the freeway, the idle was running high, the accelerator would stick but I was not going back to this it again. After 3 months, my truck still ran like crap. Once I got to Az.(it was the weekend of the big snowfall) I discovered Richard's didn't connect my heater. I finally reach Albuquerque and took it immediately to another Napa authorized service station. It was a station that I have taken my truck to before. They know I take very good care of my vehicle. It was by chance that both Richards and them were Napa authorized auto mechanics. The immediate assessment of my truck was that the new thermistat that Richards put in, leaked. the heater core was plugged, choke broken, old belts were reinstalled, a couple of motor mounts were not replaced but luckily laying on the air filter top. I had none of these problems prior to bring my truck to Richards. The new shop said no way should heads have cost me $900. nor the heads not lining up. Standard procedure would be to replace the belts. More to come as my truck is still in the shop trying to figure out what else is wrong. This shop totally took advantage of my situation and me. If your smart go somewhere else. Do not for one minute consider this shop. My friend is posting this for me as I have no computer. My name is [redacted]
This is an update from my previous post. Info from the mechanic (Napa approved) that is fixing my truck. As stated in previous review, Richards stated that it was a clogged oil pump that caused the problem. My truck has been in the shop since my return and has cost an additional $800+ dollars. It was discovered that Richards never dropped the oil pan to get to the clogged pump because there was a major oil leak from the pan, and the mechanic could tell it was not dropped. I also never received an itemized bill just a total dollar amount and then a description of what was done but not how much each repair cost to get to total cost. This shop has taken total advantage of my situation with cost, time and repairs that were not done or completed. This is a very unethical business.
