Robert E. De Barth Reviews (2)

October 3, 2014Dear Admistrator;I had no business arrangen.cats with the person, [redacted], about the subject matter. We received the typewriter on or about July 11, 2014. The machine was sent to us after we sent a packing preparation instruction (sample enclosed). The...

instruction says to be sure there is at least 3 inches of packing all around. The box that was used had no packing and was the same size of the carrying case of the typewriter. Therefore, when we opened the typewriter case and found that the left side of the carriage was damaged we believed it was because of a heavy load was put on top of the box. Due to the fact that the box was touching the case on all sides. If this was not the case the machine was put in the box already damaged. We have no way of knowing this. When [redacted] called me about the repair cost I mentioned the improper packaging and advised that the damage added about $200.00 to the cost of repair. At that point [redacted]Authorized the repair and allowed 50% of the cost put on his credit card. That was on August 5, 2014. [redacted] also, asked that I put the balance of the cost in about a month. After checking the paper work now I see a letter that was sent with the typewriter signed by Bernie James. Enclosed is a copy. However, I mention it again my conversations were with [redacted]. Bernie James wrote “you have my authorization to repair”.I would like to add that it has been our policy to do the work the way we believe it should be done and get customer approval before proceeding. This has been our policy for over 70 years and it will continue.Sincerely,Robert E. DeBarth

Review: I called Mr. DeBarth regarding repairing a key on a [redacted] circa 1957 typewriter, He requested a $65.00 consultation fee which we sent along with the typewriter for a key repair. He called us and said [redacted] dropped a very heavy package on the typewriter which broke the cardboard shipping box, the typewriter case, and the typewriter. He said it would cost $800.00 to repair. We consented because this was my typewriter when I was a little girl, and wanted to give it to my daughter. When we received the typewriter back, it was sent to us in the original box which had no damage to it whatsoever - not even a crease, the typewriter case was in the same condition as it was shipped from us, and the typewriter had a platen replaced and the requested key repaired. How could have this been as damaged as he reported - guess we should have asked for photos - when none of the packages were damaged? He charged us a total of $905.00 which is unacceptable and I believe a rip-off and fraud. When I called him, he said my husband didn't pack it correctly - my husband is a mechanical engineer and he followed Mr. DeBarth's instructions. My husband is also a musician and uses [redacted] all the time and never has had a problem shipping guitars, banjos and all instruments. After we received the typewriter back, I checked other reviews and found them to also have concerns. I called Mr,. DeBarth on Saturday, September 27, 2014 to talk to him after leaving a detailed message on Friday, September 26, 2014. I asked for $600 credit to my account since there was no visible damage to the original shipping box which he sent back to me, no damage to the case, and the typewriter had the platen replaced which was not asked for, but the key repair was. I feel this outrageous fee is unacceptable, a rip-off and fraud.

When I talked to him on Saturday, he told me he had customers and hung up on me. If it was so damaged, why isn't the original box which he shipped back to us damaged????? Or the typewriter case???? Not to mention the typewriter???? The packages, case, and typewriter are in my home if you want to see them. I trusted this man and his website and was totally scammed.Desired Settlement: $600.00 refund to my account. A total of $305.00 for a platen replacement which takes one minute at best, the consultation charge which we do not contest, nor the key repair. The other charges are prohibitive. Please look into these outrageous charges.
