Ron Benson Reviews (1)

Review: Hired Ronald Benson, brother of Michael to backfill an indoor pool.Ronald was concerned about damaging the threshold of the patio door and insisted he would need to remove it at my expense($260). I did agree. When job was completed 7/7/14 Ron indicated "this door was not meant to come out" and commented how good the installer did. I indicated to Ron I was not happy with the re-installation of the door. Caulkwork was sloppy and the exterior trim was not flush. In addition, 2 pieces of trim were missing, which Ron claimed were not. He was in a hurry to leave as he was there all day, he did offer us to take $260 off the price of the job, however Ron did a good job on the other work and told him I just wanted it fixed. Ron did fix the exterior trim. Later that night we discovered that the doorstop was missing and the interior trim was not flush with the wall, also a piece of wood supporting the threshold was not reinstalled. I did call Ron the following day and he said he had the doorstop and he could fix the trim in a few minutes, he stated he stands behind his work. Ron did return 7/19, he did show up 2 hours late. I did show him the big gap in the interior trim and indicated my wife believed the door was not reinstalled properly. He got out a level and said the door was level and plum. He refused to take out the door an reinstall, he said he would only cut part of the frame trim to make the interior trim flush. I told him that I wanted the door as it was previously. I told him that I would like a refund for the $260 for the labor for the reinstallation as he previously offered. At that point he got angry and said "see you in court then." He then took pictures of the exterior door and left without returning the doorstop.Desired Settlement: Would like the interior trim flush with the wall or a refund of at least half of the cost paid to remove and install the door.

Response:

This is response to a complaint filed by [redacted], id #[redacted]. [redacted] contract states a waiver of responsibility for any damage to slider. However, damage was not done to slider please see attached photos. Slider was installed to industry standards. Attached are emails between homeowner and Ron Benson which show job was done satisfactory and that work out of scope of the contact was done as a courtesy to [redacted]. Below is a brief overview of job.it was originally agreed upon that Forty ton of crush Crete would be used for job, this was then turned into 80 ton, and no additional labor cost was passed onto client. The quarry delivers approximately 10 ton extra crush Crete. Because of the extra stone [redacted] placed the burden of removal and displacement of the extra material upon Ron Benson and crew. Below is a breakdown of additional cost and man hours required for the additional crush Crete.Three men at four hours eachAdditional $200.00 for loader.Because [redacted] instructed me to spread the extra Stone throughout a cut in path through thewoods, the first loaders front right tire was punctured. Ron Benson called the [redacted] and had them deliver another loader at the cost of $60.00 for delivery and an additional $40.00 for the tire repair. The extra charges for the new loader and tire repair were not passed onto [redacted].During the instillation of slider, the top exterior piece of trim surrounding the sliding door was replaced and painted, paint matched to existing color, [redacted] was not charged for the extra material or labor to remove, paint and install. The slider was installed plum with the existing exterior trim, with a slight reveal to create a caulk joint for the drip edge and sides. Pictures will show the exterior of the house and the slider, the level alongside jams show the door is plum.On Saturday 7/19/141 showed up to address a request from [redacted] that interior trim of slider was not like it was before, When I showed up and entered the area where door was **. and [redacted] attacked me verbally and told me to take out a perfectly installed slider and to not fix the trim.I disagreed and showed the door worked perfectly, was plum (level), watertight, and opened and closed perfectly, [redacted] demanded 260.00 from me in which I refused him. I stated that could get the trim straightened out in an hour, that it was a simple adjustment. He then got aggressive and I stated that at best I would see him in court. then left the premises. If you need any additional information please contact me at [redacted] or [redacted].Thank you,Ron Benson

I am rejecting this response because:

Mr. Benson did in fact do extra work for us spreading out the extra stone, however there is no proof that the quarry delivered an extra 10 tons of stone, merely speculation on his part. I ordered 80 ton of stone at Mr. Benson's recommendation. The fact of the matter is that I have had another contractor look at the door and he states that the door was incorrectly put back in. The reveal on the exterior is not correct, the door jamb should be out about another 1/2". The door jamb not being flush is what is causing the interior trim not to be flush with the wall. I was not aggressive as Mr. Benson claims. Mr. Benson showed up 2 hours late and did want to be bothered to fix the door. Again, I reluctantly agreed to pay Mr. Benson 4 hours labor to remove and reinstall the door. I did so reluctantly, feeling that Mr. Benson may have had a financial motive when it had been suggested by others that he could have built a ramp to withstand the weight of the equipment. While one his workers took out the door and damaged a piece of trim which Mr. Benson had to replace, Mr. Benson was the one who replaced the door and did so without knowing how it came apart. I have no problem paying him for 1/2 of the labor for taking the door out. However, again the door is not installed properly and I feel it reasonable to be reimbursed 1/2 of the labor for the door so that I can have someone properly re install it.
