Repair order# *** dated 8/16/MrJ*** *** brought in his Pontiac Grand Prix to our shop with the complaint of engine overheatingMr*** requested a cooling system flush and oil changeI explained cooling system flushes do not repair overheating conditions and we
would need to determine the root cause of the problem before doing any workI suggested we do a complete cooling system evaluation and investigation to find the root cause of the problemMr*** authorized us to perform a cooling system investigation and check for possible head gasket failure as we suggestedAfter our preliminary investigation we found a very neglected cooling system, the engine coolant and cooling system in very poor conditionThe coolant and cooling system were contaminated, full of corrosion and very rusty (pictures available upon request via ClearMechanic digital documentation)We also noted there was evidence of cooling system stop leak that had been previously added to the cooling systemAfter further investigation and performing a head gasket block check we determined the block check failed and the cooling system tested positive for exhaust gases (pictures available upon request via ClearMechanic digital documentation)This test indicated the cylinder head gaskets were leaking and would need replacement to prevent internal coolant loss and overheatingAt that time Mr*** was then given an estimate to replace the head gaskets, radiator, thermostat and attempt to flush the rest of the cooling system (customer advised system very rusty and it would be hard to get all the corrosion and rust out but we attempt to clean it) - Mr*** declined the repairs due to the cost (estimate prepared at that time available upon request)We then spoke about an alternate workaround no guarantee solution by adding a head gasket sealer product called “BlueDevil Head Gasket Sealer” to the cooling system in an attempt to seal the head gasket without replacementMr*** was advised this may or may not seal the head gasket leak and replacing the head gaskets was the proper and only guaranteed repairHe was also advised since the cooling system was so rusty and corroded the cooling system would need to be partially flushed and the thermostat and radiator cap should be changed before adding the sealerMr*** opted to give the sealer a try with the understanding it may or may not workMr*** was advised prior to the service and acknowledged by signature on the repair order this was only an attempt to seal the head gasket and the was no warranty with this servicePer our agreement the service was performed as agreed along with the oil & filter change. On 10/11/repair order # Mr*** brought his vehicle back to the shop with the complaint of an external coolant leak but not an overheating conditionAfter a cooling system pressure test we found the timing cover gasket leaking coolant externallyWe determined the root cause of this leak was from the original cooling system contamination, corrosion and rust that had eaten away at the gaskets from the inside over a period of timeMr*** was advised and given an estimate to repair in which he declinedNote this inspection, investigation and diagnosis was performed for him as a courtesy. In summary, Mr*** originally brought in his vehicle with an overheating condition, internal engine issue (head gasket failure) resulting from lack of maintenance, cooling system failure and cooling system neglectAfter declining our recommendation to properly repair his vehicle by replacing the cylinder head gaskets and choosing to add the sealer instead he is now stating he does not want to take responsibility for the decision previously made to not properly repair the vehiclePlease note our communication skills are impeccable and we always explain in detail all the options available and possible outcomes up f*t during the service processWith this said, we are willing to once again discuss and explain the vehicle issues with Mr*** in an attempt to resolve this issueWe do feel this is an unreasonable request to ask for any refund regarding the services performed.
