He called me when I had already a full schedule for the day and I told him that I could stop by within minutes because his house was on the way to my next appointment and my service fee would be $diagnosing and would add more for additional parts and labor He said he would call me back and let me know I drove up near his house giving him a couple extra minutes to call me back Right at about minutes from our first conversation he did call me back and said for me to comebefore hanging up I told him I would only charge $for the service fee and that I was really near He agreed and I rang his door bell a couple minutes later I had him turn his thermostat to cool while I went around to observe the AC I saw that it was't starting and was humming I checked electrical connects with my voltmeter and deduced that his capacitor was bad, a very common ac problem I told him that I had one on my truck and could replace it right then and I told him it would be $for the capacitor and $for labor He agreed to that After replacing the capacitor the ac turned on and was running well I then explained to him that there were reasons the capacitor overheated and went badThat running the ac with a dirty furnace air filter could contribute and also the ac being low on refrigerant I then told him that there is no more cost for me to put my gauges on and check the refrigerant pressures but if it does require more the R-will cost him $per pound He agreed so I hooked up my gauges and showed him that the suction pressure was at about 50psi and for the degree weather it should be at about 70psiI explained that having it topped off will cool his house more efficiently and faster and will ease the ware and tare on the running parts like capacitor I had just installed I estimated to him that it could take a couple poundsHe agreed for me to top it off It took pounds so $for the R- I buttoned it up and wrote out his invoice and added up the costs all of which he agreed to before I did any of them Before he wrote me the check he asked for additional discounts I said I had already taken $off the service fee and had come very quickly to service his home, when most shops around were several days backloggedSo he wrote me the check for my asking $ $60+$50+$30+$90=$ I admit I was working fast so I could still not be too late for my next appointment Within an hour after leaving his home he called me and said he could buy a pound can of refrigerant on line for $ I said, "Are you sure it is R-because it costs me $for a pound can of R-because they quit making it 5+ years ago and you have to be a licensed, certified, dealer to purchase itAnd if you can get it for a third of the price I want to know where Then over the next couple days I received several long texts about how I had cheated him because I would not reduce my prices He kept asking for a diagnosis document and I told him a couple of times, in text replies, that his invoice has the diagnosis It's simple and few words 1(Checked A/C & found bad capacitor & a little low on R-$60.00) 2(Replaced CapacitorParts $Labor $30.00) 3(Added lbs of R-@ $per pound X $60.00=$90.00.) Paid in full check# I encouraged him to call any HVAC shop and ask them how much they would charge for what I did and even show them my invoice It was after about long texts that I felt he was now wasting my time and I asked him if he had any more important things than to keep wasting my time over a $invoice of work that I know other shops would have charged him lots more than me and he would have had to wait several days in the heat for service I did service calls that day most of which were very much like his repairs His was the smallest invoice of the day and everyone else was so grateful for my prompt service relieving them of the hot week and they all gladly paid and couldn't thank me enough

I normally don't charge by the hour but by each task performed as do many other shops I always double check with my customer before I start any procedure and let them know what the cost will be as I did in this case I stand by all my comments The only thing I would like to do at this point is charge him $more now for wasting a couple hours of my very busy time with this complaint Recap: He got prompt service on a very hot, very busy, day with a new capacitor and pounds of R-and diagnosis on his invoice all of which we agreed to before I proceeded with each step
