Roofing Northwest, Inc Reviews (1)

Review: 1. Improperly installed roof which fails to meet manufacturer's minimum requirements. According to the roofing manufacturer, "All shingles must be applied with a minimum offset no less than 4 inches." IKO's "recommended offset is 4-10 inches." Many areas of our roof feature offsets of less than 4 inches.

2. The owner (and his workers) have repeatedly done poor quality work on this roof. We've had major leakage into our living room twice after the new roof was installed. Although the leak was eventually stopped (as far as we know), it was not repaired correctly according to two different roofing contractors who have examined Roofing Northwest's work. Both of these roofing contractors pointed out to us that:

a. the ridge cap is incorrectly installed.

b. the overhang at roof's edge is inadequate, thus causing water to wick behind our gutters.

c. the site of original leakage was not repaired correctly and that it's a matter of time before roof may fail again at that point.

d. failure to provide adequate offset of shingles compromises the roof, especially on low sloped areas.

Due to the repeated demonstrations of ineptitude by this company, we do not want them on our roof again. The owner has offered to "fix" the problem, but we don't trust his ability to do so. Last summer he offered to refund our money if the manufacturer agreed that the roof was not installed according to specs. But after the manufacturer agreed that the offset minimums were indeed not fulfilled, the owner claims he made no such offer. He denies that the leak was incorrectly repaired. He denies that the overhang on roof is inadequate. He wants us to let him "fix" the offset problem. But this is not an option. We would need an independent roofing expert to oversee all of his work to ensure it truly was done correctly.Desired Settlement: We would like to be refunded $6,240 as per Mr. [redacted]'s words. The roof has a ten-year labor warranty, and the labor is the problem. The product, had it been properly installed, would not be causing us any problem as far as we know.

Response:

Mr. [redacted] first contacted me on 7/30/2010 about a leak he had in his living room ceiling. I immediately came out that day and attempted to find the leak. I told him to watch it and let me know if it continued to leak because I wasn't sure if I had found it. He then contacted me on 8/6/2010 to tell me it was still leaking. I again went out that day and told him I am going to take off some shingles and find the problem because what I thought was leaking wasn't the problem. After taking off the shingles I found that one of my employees had installed a piece of step flashing wrong behind the fascia that was causing the water to get in under the shingles. I fixed the problem and it hasn't leaked since, which is now almost 4 years later. After I fixed his leak I then paid him exactly what he asked to fix his living room ceiling. Then after 3 years of no problems I get a phone call from Mr. [redacted] attacking me and telling me he wants money. That a painter said his roof was installed wrong (yes a painter, not a roofer). Mr. [redacted] says it wasn't repaired correctly by 2 different companies. It was repaired correctly because it hasn't leaked since, and the ridge cap was installed correctly. I have attached pictures of his roof so that you can see the ridge cap in question. These "quality" roofers got up on his roof and put silicone all over places you should never put it on which leads me to believe they didn't really know what they were doing. I have asked him for there names to see if they are reputable companies but he refuses to tell me. To address his 4" offset comments, I told him if there were any areas in question I would gladly come and fix any area that did not meet IKO's installation requirements. He refuses and says that I am not capable. He won't even allow me to come and look at his roof. All he wants is money from the company. He tried to threaten me by saying he has taken another company to court and won and he knows he would win against us so I should save us both the headache of the legal system and just write him a check.

I know that we are a very reputable and quality company. We do many residential and large commercial projects every year and have never had any complaints. If I didn't know what I was doing we wouldn't be able to get contracts doing large apartment complexes and beautiful lake houses. If anyone has ever tried to find a leak they would know that it can be very tricky to pinpoint the location. I have never ignored him and found the problem on the 2nd try and for some reason in his mind that makes me incompetent. I will 100% stand behind my warranty and fix any problem even if he wants a different mutually agreed upon roofing contractor there, but I will not just write a check. He signed a contract when we were complete saying he was satisfied with our work and now 3 years later wants a refund.

I hope this answers any questions anyone might have

Revdex.com,

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted] and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

1. The business owner is the one who offered to refund our money. I don't want his money; I want a correctly installed roof. Given the problems with inadequate overhang and inadequate offset, the only way to fix it seems to be to remove the current shingles and install new ones CORRECTLY. Other problems including the incorrectly installed roof cap and drip edges are less problematic but still unacceptable. The business owner suggests that I should have known about any problem immediately. That is not reasonable. The ten-year labor warranty suggests that there should be no problems for at least ten years.
