I had to cancel a July 18 reservation at Clarion Inn Lake Buena Vista because of a last-minute flight change at the airport. However, the company still charged the $101.24 room rate to my credit card because I did not cancel 24 hours in advance. I canceled at 7:30 a.m. on the day I was originally supposed to arrive. The 24-hour cancellation policy is hidden in the fine print on the bottom of the PDF attached to their reservation confirmation email. It says, "Please not an authorization equivalent to one night's room and tax will be requested on your card 24 hours prior to your arrival date."However, the same PDF says at the top of the page. ACCOMMODATIONS REQUESTED. Not Guaranteed. Subject to Availability Upon Check-in."
In other words, Clarion Inn did not guarantee a room for me when I arrived on July 18, but I had to guarantee Clarion that I would pay for it on July 17, regardless of whether I arrived or canceled. Clarion does not guarantee their customers that they will have a room when they arrive, but customers must guarantee Clarion 24 hours in advance that they will pay for the room. What a double-standard.
I had to make an unexpected trip to Florida for the funeral of my Aunt Myrtle *** in Dade City, which I learned about on July 13. I booked the flight to Orlando on July 14, made the flight on July 15, and booked the hotel reservation on July 16 after I arrived. I spent July 15, 16, and 17 with relatives in Dade City. Due to changed circumstances on July 18, I rebooked the return Southwest Flight from July 19 to July 18 and immediately called Clarion Inn to cancel the reservation. I did not learn until then that I would still be charged for the one-night stay. I had already rebooked the Southwest Flight and paid an extre fee, so I had to cancel anyway. Clarion will argue that their cancellation policy is in writing on the confirmation, but I will argue that it is hidden in such an ingenious way that it takes advantage of people like me who must make unexpected travel changes during difficult personal circumstances.
