Review: I am submitting this complaint on 8/2/14, on a composite decking job on a set of steps and 2 porches performed by this contractor for my mother from 7/25/14-8/1/14. (Shes not too computer proficient.) My complaint isnt of the work performed but the work that wasnt performed. Apparently there was a meeting set up to discuss the job between the two and an agreed price was struck for $3730. The contractor calls the day before starting the job and shows up the next day to start the job without a written contract after being asked twice before to prepare a contractshe lets him start the job (her mistake). Hes supposed to be a businessman and shes a 76 year old woman with a guy on her doorstep ready to work. The second day the steps are built solely of treated wood and I get a call from my mother upset that the tread part of the steps ( at minimum) are not topped with composite planks like the porch, just wood. Well, now I am involved and it becomes a he said/she said situation, so after I call him to rectify going over with composite, he comes back the next day wanting additional labor and material to add composite to the steps, so after figuring the cost for me to do it later, we take the hit for our mistake of letting him go forward without a contract. The job moves to forward and I ask him to address 3 issues before the job is complete. 1. Fix a crooked board and it was done. 2. Support the back of the front porch edge better and it was done. 3. Put trim board on the exposed edges of the 2 porches (Just 2 sides each) and it was not done. After asking him to install the trim board again, he says theres composite trim board available but he didnt get any because it would need to be special ordered. After some discussion he offered to add 2 x 4 pieces as trim, I declined. Well, after checking at [redacted], where he said he buys all the material for this job, I find out its a stock item and they have plenty of it on 8/1/14. So the job ends and in my mind its not complete. Trim board needs to added to the porches, so I ask him nicely to consider removing $130 from the balance just to pay for material (4 boards) for me to finish the porches, which he refused to do and because the steps are going to be higher now with the composite material on top and another small step needs to be put in place, I ask and he agrees to leave the remaining fresh boards and a small pile of scraps I set aside for me to finish the steps, and he ends up taking the fresh boards (~$100 worth)with him the next day. If it was me, I would have held back some of the balance and let him do what he needed to do, but my mom didnt want the confrontation. Also, theres no PA State Contractor License # on his business card and it did not show up on a search of the PA.state site.Desired Settlement: In the end, because of his refusal to write a contract at any point of the job, did the steps in just wood, did not trim out the porch edges and took the few leftover pieces of wood needed to finish the steps, theres no way this business deserves an A+ rating and she should be reimbursed at least $230 for the material needed to finish the job.
