We replaced a water heater for Mr. [redacted] when his water heater failed on 10/20/2016.  This was completed to Mr. [redacted]'s satisfaction.  Following the replacement, the manufacturer requested a third party proof of original ownership in order to honor the extended...

warranty and credit the cost of the new water heater to our company.  We contacted Mr. [redacted] and asked for a copy of an electric bill, mortgage statement, gas bill or any other "third party" proof of his residency at the address at the time of the original installation(7/15/2011).  This was the proof of residency the manufacturer required.  Mr. [redacted] refused and told us it was our problem.  We sent an invoice for the labor only(not the water heater) which Mr. [redacted] ignored.  At that point we instituted a public records search and found a copy of a lien against his home prior to 7/15/2011.  We forwarded that to the manufacturer as third party proof.  It was accepted.  We wrote the labor portion off as a bad debt and closed the file.  We have not reached out to the homeowner since November of 2016.  We have not requested any money.  Based on his complaint, the work we did was satisfactory and he has not paid anything.  We do not know why he is complaining as he received a replacement water heater at no charge whatsoever.
