1. Yes, my contractors accidentally caused damage to the property next door. a. A storm window was broken initially ($60).On another day:b. Another storm window and interior glass was broken...
($120)c. Siding was allegedly dented ($100)d. Phone box was allegedly dislodged ($10)e. Plastic basement window cover was allegedly dented ($20)2. Initially, my contractor offered to replace the storm windows and fix the other issues. It is his responsibility to repair the damage. Not ours.3. However, when we noticed he wasn’t fixing the damage (3 weeks in), my husband offered to pay for the damages and take the amount out of our contractor’s pay. As in most accident cases such as this, the homeowner whose home was damaged hires a contractor to assess the damages and prepare a fair and reasonable monetary estimate for the repairs. We then would write a check to that contractor once the property is repaired. The homeowners refused to do it this way.Please see the attachment for the rest of the response... 4. My husband then offered to hire a contractor to fix the repairs. After several go betweens, the contractor we hired decided he didn’t want to work with the homeowners since they couldn’t clearly state what they needed repaired. My contractor was not going to fix the damages cheaply, as stated in the homeowner’s complaint. 5. The homeowners then asked for our insurance information. My husband clearly explained that our insurance company will not cover the damage to their property. Our insurance covers our property only. Our contractor’s insurance is supposed to cover their damage. As well, the damage to their property is nominal and won’t reach a deductible. There is no reason to involve insurance because it won’t pay anyway. 6. I then told my husband to have the homeowners call me directly, so that I could clearly understand what they wanted and explain the insurance situation again. The homeowner texted me to say he would call me on July 31. He did not call. I texted him on August 1 and let him know I was available to talk at any time. Again, I did not hear from him. During this conversation, I wanted to let him know that his insurance could contact me directly and I would explain the situation to them, so that he would not have to deal with it anymore. I would work with his insurance company to repair the damages. This conversation never happened because the homeowner did not call me. 7. One week later, they wrote a complaint to the Revdex.com. My husband and I have done everything we can do to fix the damages my contractor caused. The homeowners seem to be unwilling to cooperate and are causing the issue to linger. After speaking with my insurance agent, he assured me that I have taken the proper steps to fix the issue. I am still willing to pay for the damages. Please see #3.At one point, the homeowner’s told my husband that the damages were causing additional damages to their inside windows and wanted those replaced as well. My insurance agent assured me that it is the homeowner’s responsibility to protect their home from additional damages until the initial damages can be repaired. The homeowners also mentioned broken glass inside their house causing a hazard to their child. Again, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to protect their home from further damage and their children. I have further conversations recorded between my husband and the homeowner in a messenger chat if more information is needed. The chat clearly outlines the confusion from the homeowners and my husband trying to fix the damages to no avail.
