Complaint: ***
I am rejecting this response because:I have had an independent inspection of the roof and no longer trust the quality of my current roof installationBecause of these defects I do not trust that the additional shingles will be installed correctly and do not trust Russo Seamless Gutters to complete in full the issues with this jobI would like to hire a new contractor to fully replace the roofHis response does not address the issues with the interior damage of my home because of the faulty installation of the roof. I have a letter from the independent inspection and this can be provided upon request.

Review: In January 2014 Russo Seamless Gutters was hired by myself to install a roof on my house. I paid for all materials; I never indicated that I wished to save money by acquiring cheaper materials for the job. I paid the asking price with no questions asked. Given that Russo has good reviews on [redacted], I assumed this was a safe decision. I was warned by Russo that the price was subject to change based on the fact that the amount of materials needed was tentative. His warning indeed proved to be true, and he increased the price throughout the installation of the roof.

The installation seemingly went well, and they installed the roof in an appropriate amount of time.

I did not give the roof a second thought until about two months ago, when I noticed that I have a leak above my furnace in my garage. My son went to investigate the possible cause of this leak, which led him to the roof, where he found that the upper-most portion of my roof had no shingles. I have since learned that this is called a "rolled roof". Also, they did not put flashing around the chimney which seems to be the most likely cause of the leak in my garage.

I have since learned that a rolled roof is sometimes installed in cases where the angle of the roof is beneath a certain value. They are also significantly cheaper than a shingled-roof. The problem is, rolled roofs are also known to be prone to problems and they definitely reduce the property value of your house, as I have learned after speaking with experts. This is a clear violation of trust by Russo as I explicitly indicated to him that I did not want to go about this job in the cheapest way, and never indicated that I wanted to use cheaper materials. Russo simply wanted to maximize his profits by taking advantage of my passivity regarding the materials used, due to the trust I had with his business.

His failure to put flashing around my chimney is now causing me unknown amounts in repairs, which is solely caused by his malpractice.Desired Settlement: At the moment I do not know exactly how much it will be to fix all the damage caused by Russo's malpractice.

I want Russo to reimburse me to fix the roof and the damages caused. I also want compensation for this massive inconvenience as this is consuming many valuable hours of my time as well as stress of my body.

My tentative desired outcome is a 60% refund of the approximately $12,000 paid to him. This amount is tentative because I am currently in the process of contacting other roofers to determine exactly where else Russo may have taken advantage of me by using cheaper materials.

Response:

We were hired to install new roof by this customer. To install new [redacted] single throughout. Stipulation on the contract stated if any plywood needed would be additional $65 per sheet. There were multiple sheets needed replacement there was a change work order for the amount of plywood replaced. That is the only change of price from the original estimate given. When install on the roof we noted the rear upper dormer has only a 2 inch on 12 inch pitch. Based on that amount of pitch the area needed to have flat roof material. We installed a modified Bittman rubberized roof system on the upper rear dormer. I neglected to inform the homeowner of this set change made by us. Due to the low pitch your standard [redacted] shingles could possibly leak and we wanted to prevent that. There was our judgment call to opt for this style roof at dormer. The Bittman modified roofing system is used in commercial applications and typically cost double the amount of the [redacted]. The customer's son went on the roof when noted a slight leak occurring. The individual stated there no shingles on the dormer?, which in the customer's eyes looks incorrect. As per the flashing around the chimneys when installing the roof on the original work order , all was intact and did not need replacement. Nowhere on the contract is replacing any flashing or counter flashing around the chimneys included. The contract is in place to protect the homeowner and contractor of any work to be commenced. All work was done to code, we had a permit in place and the township came out and approved final inspection.
