Mr*** has been a customer for many years. He is very knowledgeable with regard to procedure, time tables as well as how to contact us should he ever have a question. Our policy is to notify customers via email of their upcoming annual renewal requirements. Annual renewal
reminder emails are sent monthly on or about the 17th of each month. These reminder emails are sent each month, three months prior to the anniversary date and the month of the anniversary. Mr*** renewed his company in 2013, and now 2015. The renewal must be paid weeks prior to the anniversary date. This has been the policy for two years now. Mr*** paid the renewal AFTER his anniversary date............................................................................... I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ***, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. The one notice I received was only days prior to the renewal date. For me, it is not the $$ amount the surcharge much as it is principle behind it. I have been debt free for years nowI pay my bills and don't incur new debt, that's just the way I am. So for me to have to pay an extra $because of someone else's irresponsibility, that bothers me. I don't care so much about the $300. But I don't want to pay more than I should because I did not receive a notice greater than days before renewal dateAgain, a renewal notice mailed to my address would have solved the problem of not receiving an electronic notice. I receive a renewal in the mail, as well as electronic notification for my other domestic corporation on a yearly basis, enabling me to pay on timeHeck, my other service even offer a discount if I pay earlySo why can't Documenting Services deliver the same satisfaction and service? It comes down to principle for me. I live debt free, pay any bills in full and live as a responsible human being, so when I have to pay a $late fee for something beyond my character, nature and control, that upsets meHence my complaint to the Revdex.comSomeone else's action or lack thereof has cost me $and that is not rightDocumenting Services is stating that I am the one who should be aware of their way of doing business, their email dates and renewal times and so forth. So then my question is, what am I paying them for? Am I supposed to inquire with them when it comes to renewal every year? Why did I contract with them in the first placeI am their client, they should be a little more thorough, professional and show a little more care towards their client, instead of insinuating that I let this happen because I should know how they operate their "service".

[To assist us in bringing this matter to a close, we would like to know your view on the matter.]Although it is their policy to contact their clients electronically, I still maintain that I did not receive 2 out of the three emails.  A simple postage stamp on a letter sent in addition to said emails' would have helped to eliminate the possibility of lost email, or email sent to a spam folder.
Regards,
[redacted]

As we previously stated, it is our policy and procedure to send several email notifications. If this was the client's first year, and he had never been through the yearly procedure in the past, then we could understand some confusion. That is not the case here. The client stated that he did receive at least one notice. That is more than enough, especially since the client already knew from previous years that the payments need to be made in a specific time frame.FROM [redacted]:  Although it is their policy to contact their clients electronically, I still maintain that I did not receive 2 out of the three emails.  A simple postage stamp on a letter sent in addition to said emails' would have helped to eliminate the possibility of lost email, or email sent to a spam folder.  Again, it is the clients responsibility to renew in a timely manner. Even if the client only received 1 of the 3 emails, that is still adequate notice and 1 more than we are required to send. The notifications we send are done as a courtesy to our clients, and are in no way required of us.We are not responsible for making the clients payments. There's really not much more to say on the matter.[redacted], if you are not willing to take responsibility for your own actions (or lack thereof), we should probably part ways. We do not want clients that cause us extra work and time responding to stuff like this. We especially don't want to do business with someone that would attempt to tarnish our reputation when we did nothing wrong.

I had an engine remanufactured by this firm and within 300 miles after installation had a valve train malfunction. I spoke with their warranty guy and he stated it was my responsibility to diagnose the problem and report back to him. The problem was with the installation of the push rod guide plates, which were installed by S & J upside down even though they were clearly marked "this side up". They did provide new parts but offered no compensation for labor or guidance on installation. I did the removal and replacement of the parts with success but I feel I should have been compensated monetarily because I paid good money for them to do a professional job to begin with.

Review: I requested assistance for a complete engine I had purchased. I send the S&J engine a video clip of the engine noise (metal to metal knocking). The engine was then back at the mechanic to pull and prep the engine to ship back to S&J engine. I received a letter that S&J engine stated that no defects were found but pistons were showing burnt oil scuffing and they if the engine continued to run it would have had catastrophic failure. This was a complete long block engine. S&J stated for $850.00 they will refurbish the engine and I have to pay all shipping.Desired Settlement: Full refund and payment of labor.

Response:

We sold (at his request) a modified six cylinder jeep engine (288 cu. in.) on 12-01-12, warranty contract # [redacted]. Mr [redacted] complained of an engine knock on 03-25-13 and he returned it to us for diagnoses on 07-25-13, freight pre paid. As you can see form the diagnostic report sent to Mr. [redacted] we found piston skirt scuffing on all the pistons. Even though the skirt scuffing is not covered by the warranty which voids the warranty, the piston skirt scuffing in of itself most likely did not cause the complaint. However the diagnostic report also found detonation was taking place (which also voids the warranty), burning through of the head gasket steel fire ring, which if continued would destroy the engine and was the most likely cause of the piston scuffing and the engine detonation knock detected by Mr. [redacted].

It must also be noted Mr. [redacted] failed to follow the terms of the warranty contract; he did not return a copy for our files with the required validation testing which also voids the warranty contract. Had Mr. [redacted] followed the terms of the warranty contract and had a diagnostic scan done on his engine this failure would have been avoided, especially since he purchased an engine modified beyond factory specification which renders any and all O.E.M ignition specifications useless. I have enclosed a copy of our warranty for your convenience.

The offer to repair Mr. [redacted]’s engine for $850.00 is well below our cost and is still available if he so wishes.

however the thirty day time period for storing his engine will expire at the end of this month.

Review: I purchased a re-manufactured engine from S&J for $2,124. When the engine was installed, everything seemed to be in working order. The installer states that the truck ran smoothly, with no telltale noises of dysfunction. Then, without warning, the engine shut off and would not start again. There was no metallic sound to indicate oil starvation in any way. Upon contacting [redacted] at S&J Engines, the mechanic was told to remove the valve cover and check for problems. He removed it & noted oil dripping from it. Seeing no problems regarding oil delivery, he was told to pull of the oil pan and check for problems in the bottom end. Upon doing this, he realized that the number 4 bearing was seized to the crank shaft. Because he knew that oil starvation was not the cause, he was forced to consider that the problem was a defect with the product. He was told to repackage the engine, as well as my old engine, for pick up. Before doing so, we took pictures of the re-manufactured engine, which showed oil was indeed present. It has now been 2 weeks since S&J received said engines. During this time, I am informed, diagnostics tests were run and the findings implied that oil starvation was the cause for malfunction. Because the installer followed the proper procedure as far as priming and assembly, and the truck made no noises indicating oil starvation upon running, my mechanic will attest to the fact that this was not the case. I continued email correspondence with S&J and my mechanic spoke to them about sending a new engine, agreeing to forgo his labor charges in exchange. [redacted] at S & J tried to change the cause of malfunction to "too much force applied during installation, then finally agreed to ask "the powers that be" if this would be an acceptable resolution. We have yet to hear from anyone despite our repeated emails and calls. I have also not received my $300 core charge even though they still have my old engine. They DID inform me that they would repair their defective engine for another $850 plus freight.Desired Settlement: A replacement engine would be acceptable, as well as receiving either the promised core charge of $300 or my old engine in its entirety. My mechanic even told the warranty department that he would forgo his labor charges if they would send us a different engine in proper working order. Because I already paid for an engine and shipping once, I am not paying almost $1000 again for repair or freight. This company already has a sketchy reputation and needs to work on customer satisfaction.

Response:

please not the enclosed diagnostic report sent to Mr. [redacted] on 9-18-13. This diagnostic report clearly shows and explains why Mr. [redacted]’s engine failed and why it was not covered by the warranty. We have offered as stated in our correspondence to Mr. [redacted] to repair his engine below cost.

Mr. [redacted] also sent us an email stating he thought we misrepresented our findings and/or mixed his engine diagnosis with another like engine. You will find my email correspondence along with pictures showing him the warranty number stamped in the block at the time of manufacturing along with a full view of the damaged crankshaft and cylinder block as he requested reassuring him the diagnostic report was accurate and was indeed his long block.

Mr. [redacted] did not return the factory copy of the warranty contract (# [redacted]) so I have enclosed a sample copy. Please note the disclaimer section stating “S&J Engines inc. will not be responsible or liable for any of the following”. Number 8 states “Damage due to oil starvation for any reason”.

Mr. [redacted]’s $300.00 core credit was issued on 09-17-13 minus the return freight charge on invoice 48697.

Our offer to repair long block [redacted] at below cost is still optional however the courtesy thirty day storage will end on the 18th. Mr. [redacted] must authorize the repairs, request that long block [redacted] be returned as is, disassembled or it will be disposed of.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

It would be redundant to keep asserting that oil starvation was not the cause of engine failure. I simply have no proof on the matter, and the company has conveniently crafted photographs, however generic they may look, to insist that this is the case.

However, I will admit to receiving a refund of $125. I had previously wondered what this refund was for, but now I realize the reason for receiving it. Because I was never informed of any further charges for freight (after all, it was the responsibility to pick up my old engine anyway), I will ask that both engines be returned to me and I will pay S&J Engines the 125 refund back. The 175 they withheld of my core charge can be applied to any additional freight, because I was never informed I would be charged this amount anyway, regardless of their method of receiving it.

In short, I will pay this company 125 to send me both engines back, in exactly the same condition as when they received them. In return, I will overlook the horrible company review I planned to post and I will avoid taking this issue to small claims court in Spokane, Wa, which I am fully prepared for in the case of non-resolution. I have pictures of both engines in their entirety and a video of the truck running smoothly upon assembly. Hopefully this will resolve the issue and I can wash my hands of S&J Engines. They have, after all, made quite a sum of money off my purchase, however displeased I am with their service.

Response:

The request from [redacted] to return his original engine (called a core) cannot be granted. 1. He was refunded for the core charge on his purchases, 2. His original engine (which became our core once he returned it and was issued the core refund) has been re-manufactured and sold.

very disappointed in the service I have receieve from this company. first bought a engine from them and after it was installed it has a loud tapping noise coming from the top of the engine. tried calling and all I get are recordings so I leave a message for them to call back and so far have not heard a word so I figured I would call to send the core back and again all I get is a recording to leave a message.for a engine that I bought for over 2 grand you think I would get better customer service NOT I WOULD Never BUY ANOTHER ENGINE FROM THESES PEOPLE

Review: I purchased a new engine from S&J back in December, installed it myself. The engine didn't even last 2,000 miles. I lost oil pressure and it was knocking bad as I pulled in a driveway. I called and spoke to [redacted] with s&j engines, he said take oil filter off and squirt oil in the two holes and put filter back on and try to start it and see I it gets pressure... so I did and it sounded horrible, I called and left a msg saying I wasn't going to turn it over again as it sounded like metal on metal. So I pulled the engine, removed the oil pan and found a lot of metal shavings and a shim that had fallen out, took pictures and sent them to S&J engines. They said they would send someone to pick it up and bring it back to there shop in spokane wa to look at it. [redacted] then stated that it was probably my clutch that ruined the motor, and this was before they even had looked at it. So rather then calling me , [redacted] sends me an email stating that the engine would not be fixed unless I paid 750.00 plus freight ..and it was damaged by my clutch or slave cylinder etc...and was not covered to be fixed. they didn't even spell my last name correct, they put 1998 trooper rather then 1988 and also sent me 2 pages of crap regarding automatic transmissions from "1987" yeah really... 1987.... I Have a manual guys... it is no wonder your motors fall apart. So I called and spoke with [redacted] the owner and he says that there is 100% no way anything on there engines can fail, and it was my clutch that caused the failure.... I have spoken to several folks that work on troopers and they all believe the engine was put together poorly, and the effects I got should be seen on an engine with 200,000 miles not 2000. I am planning on taking S&J engines to court as I see many complaints are all given the same response as what they gave me... For one [redacted] said he has seen engines fall apart the same way mine did not even 5 miles down the road.. I told [redacted] to tell a judge that my clutch ruined the engine...Desired Settlement: Refund or completely new engine wich will probably go bad as I seen several complaints where they did get a second engine and it just had different issues..... refund would be better, you can't sell junk and get away with it and blame everyone but yourself for the failures and expect to get away with it forever !

Review: I ordered a motor from this company and I received the wrong motor. I called the company back and reordered the correct motor about a month ago and have yet to receive the correct motor. I talked to the supervisor [redacted] today and he laughed in my face as I asked questions about why this company tried to debit my account again without my consent. When I called to reorder the motor a month ago I spoke with [redacted] and he never informed me that they would need to reprocess my card. So now I am sitting here with the wrong motor and they will not pay to have the motor shipped back and will not guarantee that I will receive a refund once this motor is shipped back. The supervisor [redacted] was VERY disrespectful and unprofessional. This company told me that they would shop me the correct motor and would pick up the wrong motor. Now they are stating that they are stopping the deliver because they couldn't debit my account again (which was not discussed or authorized by myself) and I have to ship the incorrect motor back and pay for shipping myself, which would not have occurred because it was going to be swapped out. I feel as though I should not have to pay $200 in shipping to ship the motor back due to the incorrect motor being ordered and them stopping the shipment of the correct motor. Above all else, this supervisor [redacted] laughed at me and thought that this situation was funny and when I stated what's funny, he just sat there quiet. He said that they're just a mom and pop shop. I felt as though I was discriminated again and would like to return this motor free of change and get my refund back.Desired Settlement: I want this company to pay to have the motor shipped back or come pick it up as promised and refund my money.

Dear [redacted]

I purchased a 390-FE from S & J approximately one year ago for my '67 F-100. I have since put approximately 15000 miles on this engine and have no complaints to date. I was very satisfied with shipping times, questions answered at my time of order, and the inclusion of all necessary gaskets and break in oil.
If the need arises for another engine in a future restoration, I will be calling these guys again. Thank you.

Review: I purchased a engine from S&J Engines in 2012 for 1984 Chevy S10, and on April 23rd 2013 my truck died on entrance ramp of interstate. I had it towed to [redacted]. they discovered my timing chain assembly was broken- all knotted up. they received the replacement timing chain assembly tensioner and guide, replaced it and I paid $765.24 well guess what........ I have been dealing with [redacted] at S&J and needless to say, you have to leave a voice message or you do not get ahold of him. my moter is under warranty "he assured me" and [redacted] Auto Repair. I have faxed the bill to him twice and both times I get a comfirmation. I have yet to be reimbursed for the damage of a deffective part. He also stated he never received my fax. All i'm asking is for reimbursement for the damages to my motor! afterall it was under "Warranty"Desired Settlement: reimbursed for motor damage $765.24

There motors and warrantys dont hold up. It sounds fantastic, 7 years or 100,000 miles but read the fine print because thats were they screw you. Its now been about a year and a half since I recived the original toyota long block. The first one lasted about 10 months before blowing, it had a very obvious knocking sound. It was sent back to the company and they claimed it wouldnt fall under warranty because it was caused by a blown head gasket. RIGHT.
I then had to pay $1,700 to get it back. That motor just blew after running for only about a month. It had a very consistent misfire from the first
week and now shows signs of oil in the number two cylinder. Bad work, bad work ethic. They dont want your business they just want a buck.

Review: Poor workmanship issues with product. Brand new motor needs to be pulled again to replace leaky oil seal.Warranty dosn't really seem to cover anything if this motor is used for a custom built car that doesn't have a year or manufacture.Probably biggest thing is warranty department does not return phone calls costing me hundreds of dollars more now that my motor is back in the vehicle again since it was thought pulling parts off the motor would void the "warranty"I caution anyone building a custom car not to expect a warrany from these peopleDesired Settlement: I want to pay someone to do this repair and have it fully covered not just 1/3 the cost of a repair shopAlso the answer for I am having a problem is I am sorry lets seevwhat we can do not nobody is perfect

Response:

According to Mr. [redacted] he purchased a 350 cu. in. G/M long block from us about a year ago and installed it in a street rod. I am unable to confirm this transaction, we do not have a warranty contract number to track the sale and his name does not come up in our data base therefor I cannot confirm the sale date. However during my conversation (yesterday) with Mr. [redacted] I informed him the warranty excludes any coverage on installation of long blocks installed in non O.E.M. applications, i.e. a V-8 installed in a Volkswagen or Mr. [redacted]'s street rod. But as a courtesy we would follow the terms of the warranty for reimbursement. According to MR. [redacted] he installed the engine himself and therefor the warranty rate would be for self installers. If I misunderstood then he could send in the repair bill along with a receipt for the engine install form the installing facility and we would reimburse as per the terms of the warranty contract for shop labor rate.
