My wife and I purchased a Memorial Guardian Plan Preeneed Funeral Contract from The Chapel Hill branch of Olinger Mortuary on July 12, 1994. This was in the form of a Trust Account. Parent company is SCI of Houston, Texas, though this was not apparent at time of purchase. Purchase price was $1,693.00 An identical plan was purchased for my wife, [redacted].On May 31, 2001 I was advised by '[redacted]'(sp) of Chapel Hill that there was accumulated interest in the amount of $1,173.34, giving the Trust a value of $2,866.34.[redacted] passed away on 12/23/13. Proceeds of her trust were paid to Thomson Funeral Chapel, Goodyear, AZ, in the amount of $1,693.00. It was necessary for me to pay an additional $731.99 for the exact services that we agreed on back in 1994.I decided to ask for a refund of the money I paid, though Olingers/SCI had used our money for over nineteen years, no share of the trust profits had been passed along towards [redacted]'s final expenses nor would any proceeds be passed along when my time comes.Yesterday, I received a check in the amount of $1,439.05 as my refund. Olingers Chapel Hill Mortuary had kept 15% as additional profit.I must suppose that Olingers will insist that what was done was completely legal, but, not that what was done was ethical in any way. I hate to see others who purchased similar contracts be hoodwinked like my late wife and I have been. I can fax a copy of the contracts if desired.
