S & I Cleaners Reviews (1)

New cashmere/wool sweater left for cleaning was returned damaged. Owner refuses to do anything about it and says they did nothing wrong. In July of this year I left a new cashmere/wool sweater to be cleaned. It is black with decorative iron-on studs painted an antique brass color. It is a [redacted] from [redacted] and not inexpensive. I told the owner the sweater had never been worn. He had always been very friendly and talkative and I had been doing business there for several years and I trusted their work. Due to various health problems I was not able to return to pick up the sweater for two months and when I did I did not check it assuming everything was fine. I took it home and hung it in my closet for about another month before I finally took off the plastic cover and realized the damage. I went back to The Cleaners the next day and showed the damage to the owner who asked if he could keep the sweater to find out what had happened. He also pointed out that many of the studs were missing. I hadn't noticed that because there are so many studs but once he pointed it out I did notice that when you look at the sweater closely you can see a pattern to the studs and he obviously did. I left the sweater as he asked and went back a few days later. He was not there but [redacted], a young college student who has worked there for a few years, was there. I told him what had happened and he said nothing. I asked if his boss had told him about this and he said he had. I then asked what his boss intended to do about it and he didn't say anything. I told him that certainly his boss was going to make this right but he didn't say anything. It then hit me that the owner had left [redacted] to tell me the bad news and [redacted] couldn't. I was so angry I asked [redacted] if his boss intended to do nothing and [redacted] just repeated the word Nothing. [redacted] is an extremely polite young man and I felt sorry for him that he was put in this situation. I told him to tell his boss I would take him to small claims court. I was so upset I forgot to ask for the sweater and returned either the next day or a day after that but made sure it was during the time the owner would be there. I told the owner I was coming to pick up the sweater and he acted as if nothing was wrong and made no mention about what they had done to my sweater. He began to walk to the back of the store to get the sweater and as he did I asked him if he really didn't intend to do anything for me. He stopped, turned his head and said, "Did you talk to THE MANAGER?" Never in all the years I went there was there ever any indication either in conversation or on a sign or on the door of the store that [redacted] had any kind of position of authority. If there was ever any conversation about decision making regardless of how trivial [redacted] always referred to his boss. So when I was asked if I'd talked with the manager I said, What manager? You mean [redacted] is the manager? The owner said, "Yes. The manager. What did he say?" I said [redacted] said you were going to do nothing. And he said, "Good. Nothing. You talked to the manager." When he brought my sweater to me and I referred to him as the owner he denied even being the owner and never once even offered an apology. On the contrary his attitude was very smug and dismissive. Desired SettlementI would like a refund for the amount I paid for the sweater. I would like to replace it but I know that's impossible because it's from a past season. It was originally around $300 but I bought it on sale and only ask for that amount in return. I paid $225 for the sweater.Business Response we at S and I cleaners practice the upmost care when handling garments. Care label instructions are always read and followed before cleaning, and the same was done in the case of mrs. [redacted] sweater. when clothing is presented to our clerks, they routinely examine them before cleaning. Garments that haved decorative beads and stones are checked to see if they are sewn or glued to the garment. It has been our experience that glued on decorations do not perform well in cleaning as the glue often times does not hold during the cleaning process. Mrs. [redacted] sweater had glued on beading. Upon viewing the sweater, the clerk distinctly remembers cautioning to mrs. [redacted] there was possiblity she would loose some of her beads. Her response was "well, i'm sure you will do your best". Being that it was some time ago, i'm sure mrs. [redacted] does not recall this, but our best is what we did. We value all of our customers and want them to have a good experience each and everytime. however,in this case, we feel we performed per care label instructions and should not be subject to repayment. We would like the opportunity to take a look at the garment and if at all possible see if it can be refurbished, and the beading replaced. We apologize for any confusion, but the gentleman mrs.[redacted] referred to as the owner is in fact only a employee.
