Review: I took a prescription for new glasses from Dr. [redacted] at [redacted] Eye Center to S.P. Optican Lab on March 25, 2012. The trifocals made there for me failed to correct my double vision in the lower part of the glasses. The owner then made a second pair of trifocals with what he called a "slab-off". Again, the lenses did not solve the problem. He then sent me to an optician at [redacted] in Oceanside. Her Rx was totally different from Dr. [redacted] whom I have gone to for many years because of numerous eye problems. I took her Rx back to S.P., but told the owner I didn't want to risk more money on such a totally different Rx. I asked him to make me bifocals from Dr. [redacted] Rx instead of trifocals. Again they didn't workDesired Settlement: . He then said be would make me a fourth set of lenses (at no charge) using the [redacted] optician’s Rx, but he would not refund any money. He also said he had never heard of the lenses Dr. [redacted] prescribed and that they did not exist. I checked with Dr. [redacted] and two other opticians and was told they DO exist - they just have to be sent to a special lab to be made. This owner should have said he didn't understand the Rx or clarified it with Dr. [redacted] before starting the job. I am now out $732.00 (no insurance) and still have no glasses.

Response:

We were formerly a wholesale lab, that's now open to the pubic. We have had over 30 years experience in specialty prescriptions. Unlike all other optician in our area, we are the ones to make any difficult prescription in house, and have more knowledge of what can and can not be done. In the case of Mrs. [redacted] we took the order for lenses on 3/25/12. We did see the note on the prescription for prism in distance. Patient wanted trifocal lenses. Once prisms are ground into the distance portion, it automatically runs through the entire lens. The prism can't be separate. We called the doctor regarding this, they confirmed to go ahead a make lenses. On 3/28/12 patient came in to pick up glasses. She sees great in the distance, but double in the reading portion only. We called and spoke to [redacted] at Dr. [redacted] 's office once again to let them know of patient's problem. He said he would check with the doctor. On 4/4/12 Dr. [redacted] authorized a Slab-Off lens to be made and sent over a revised prescription. When doctors make a prescription change the only fee is material cost. In Mrs. [redacted]'s case it was material cost plus Slab-Off fee. That was the best we could offer at that point of time. 4/9/12 We called here and advised of prescription change and fee. She authorized to go ahead and make lenses. 4/30/12 called patient to let her know glasses were finished. When she came in to pick them up, she still was seeing double in the reading. At this point we advised here this is a prescription issue. She should get a second opinion from a different doctor. In our experience MD doctors are good for surgery, but not so good for eye exams. OD doctors are specialized in eye exams. So, we referred her to Dr. [redacted]s, whom we've known a long time for good prescriptions. We made a point to call Dr. [redacted] directly and advised of patients problems. We made sure she would take extra time and give a thorough exam. 6/4/12 patient came back and showed us Dr. [redacted]'s prescription. Advised there's in big difference between Dr. [redacted] and Dr. [redacted] prescriptions. It look like Dr. [redacted] is going in the right direction. Patient said she sees good in the distance and doesn't want to fill Dr. [redacted] prescription. She had us make Dr. [redacted]'s prescription once again, but remove the Slab-Off and go to bifocal. Patient came in to pick up on 6/7/12 and said she'll give glasses a try. 6/30/12 patient came in demanding a full refund on all 3 sets of lenses made. The optician explained we were very cautious before making each set, especially since the first set didn't work. We have called Dr. [redacted] to verify prescriptions before making. We offered to make Dr. [redacted] prescription at No Charge to prove our point, that Dr. [redacted] prescription is correct and Dr. [redacted]'s prescription is wrong. Then when she picks up the glasses and sees the evidence that she can see, approach Dr. [redacted] to compensate her for the extra expense due to a bad prescription. So, we have tried to help Mrs. [redacted] the best we can. But, she still insists that her Dr. [redacted] is correct. We still insist that Dr. [redacted] prescription will fix her problem. But, Mrs. [redacted] did'nt want to listen. [redacted] S.P. Optical 1998 Hacienda Dr. Vista, CA 92081 (760) 631-0270
