S & S Towing, Inc Reviews (1)

Quoted price from owner S&S Towing via phone 12/2/13. Tried pay and retrieve wrecked car,Price gouged from 235$ to 400+$. No invoice or price list On Nov 29,2013 my son was involved in a car accident.State Troopers called S&S for towing. S&S towed the car away to their I tried to retrieve personal belongings on 11/30/13 business was closed and we had to wait until it reopened on Monday. I called first thing Monday 12/2/13 around 8:1 5am to pay fee and retrieve car.Man on the phone quoted me a price of 235$ if I picked up the car before 5pm that day 12/2/13 or an additional fee of 35$a day would accrue.I was told to call them on the way to the lot once I was ready to retrieve the car and someone would meet us their to open the gate. I arranged for another tow truck to go and get the car from their lot.Upon my husband arriving he was greeted by a young lady who did not have an invoice ready a price list or any proof of their posted charges for the tow.So my husband told her the quoted price. However, she told my husband that it would cost over 410$ to remove the already totaled Oldsmobile Cutlas vehicle from the lot.My husband disputed the charge. And called the phone number on the business card to speak with a manager. The person on the phone declared that A quote Had Not been given nor where they told we were coming for the car. While on the phone the tow truck driver arrives to unlock the gate because he Was dispatched to do so. I then called the number and spoke to someone who began a story about not realizing my car was in the Raleigh Durham area and that they have a lot of car lots. He went on to break down the cost and stating he doesn't know why I was quoted 235$ since they had to clean up the scene that adds an additional cost of 100$. I told him my price quote was for 165$ Emergency tow and 70 for the two day storage. Ialso told him that I have pictures that the scene has not been cleaned and that all they did was tow the car away. Needless to say he disputed that even though I still have these pictures. The person continued the break down of the bill stating that their was a 55$ per day charge for storing the car. I quickly responded.. No! I was told 35$ per day. He followed with an "Oh ok maybe 35$ then." The conversation was limited then after because as I was ready to explain why their is a huge problem with my bill, he informed me that he was calling the sheriff and I needed to leave his lot. I responded by telling him I was going to call the State Trooper that witnessed their wasn't a clean up and that I didn't care who he called because I was at home and not on his lot anyway. The price was gouged a significant amount as the tow truck driver insisted, that spoke to my husband, that it will only grow due to us not paying the removal fee on 12/2/13. I went online and read the reviews and found a case almost identical word for word to mine. This place is driving up prices in my opinion in order to either keep the wrecked cars for profit or rip off consumers. Either way they are not practicing good costumer services by changing prices at will to suit their individual needs. Once again I have the wreckage pictures to prove what remains and all the debris that my husband and I gathered the day following the accident. Please investigate this company and read the reviews because they are using an already stressful and heart wrenching incident to make a price gouged profit.I am also missing property from the car and will be tracking my cellphone to try and locate its whereabouts.Desired SettlementI am asking to pay only the charge that I was quoted and to be able to retrieve my property from the storage lot at S&S Towing. Business Response /[redacted]/On 12/2/13, we got a call from a customer who wished to retrieve their belongings from their car. A female employee from S & S Towing arrived expecting the customer to simply do as they asked, which was to gather their personal belongings from the vehicle. Instead, the female employee was surprised when a tow truck along with the customer arrived. The customer did not let us know that they planned to pick the car that day which is why our female employee did not have a prepared invoice. A final invoice is prepared the day the vehicle is picked up, adding the daily storage fee. The female employee told the customer that she was not expecting this and told the customer that she would have to call the manager to find out the prices on the vehicle. The female employee was quoted a price from the customer, but after speaking with the manager, the female employee wrote down the actual prices, and the quoted price stated by the owner was significantly lower than the actual cost of retrieving the vehicle. She wrote the prices for them on an official invoice and even talked with the manager, then lowering the price for them out of sincerity. Our Durham County Highway Patrol prices were $165 for a collision tow and $35 a day storage so maybe the manager had previously quoted them those two prices blindly and they assumed that there were no other charges, but the car was winched out which is an $85 charge and cleanup was done, which was an extra $100 charge reflected in the total cost the day the customers came to pick the vehicle up, and this was when the final bill total was quoted to the customer. The vehicle had significant damage and had a ton of debris from a tree still wrapped around the axel of the vehicle. We are required by Highway Patrol to clean up the debris, and we always do this. When the female employee told the customer the price, he quickly disputed it, and both he and his son had a terrible attitude accusing S & S Towing of ripping them off. The female employee told the customers that she could tell just by looking at it that there had to have been a lot involved with the removal of their vehicle. The female employee felt extremely unsafe at that time because there were four people, all of which were very mad, against her, so she called the manager back and felt the need to get assistance from the owner of the neighboring lot. The owner of the neighboring lot came in calmly to help the female employee get control of the situation and stated that they must either pay or leave the lot without the car. Both the female employee and the owner of the neighboring lot handled the situation calmly, neither of them raising a voice. This may have been where the customer's complaint about the price being $55 per day storage "oh okay maybe $35 then"... The owner of the neighboring lot may have stated this number, not familiar with S & S Towing's approved prices by Highway Patrol. He was simply there to help control the situation. The female employee had already explained the prices to them accurately. The customers took the radio out of the car and took it with them, they tried to take more, but the owner of the neighboring lot told them that they were not lawfully allowed to take anything that was attached to the vehicle when it was towed in. The customers were riled up and continued to say they were being ripped off, but left without the car because they refused to pay for the vehicle's bill. I can also assure you that none of S & S Towing's employees took any of the customer's property from the vehicle. We hope that they find their lost phone and we would be glad for them to track the phone down because our hands are clean of it. There are any number of other places the phone could have been lost, one main one being the scene of the accident. Our prices are set and approved by Durham County Highway Patrol, so we are careful to charge the appropriate prices, and did so in this case. Storage fees do accrew daily at the rate set by Highway Patrol.
