Canceled Subscription Bill Sent to Collections
I have subscribed to the Sacramento Bee since the 1990's. Dealing with the paper in recent years has been difficult. Due to rising costs and dwindling local news, I went from daily delivery of the paper to getting it Friday, Saturday and Sunday and in the last three years, I opted for delivery of the Sunday paper with 24/7 digital access. For nearly a year, I couldn't get digital access because the paper's system wouldn't recognize my phone number or account. And despite numerous calls and emails, I was never able to get the Sunday paper delivered to my porch where all papers had been delivered before. Instead it was thrown in the driver where it was regularly watered by my neighbor's sprinklers or I ran over it when I backed out of the garage. Last year, I decided I'd had enough. The day before my subscription was to end on July 26, 2021, the Bee sent me an email. Strangely, the email didn't contain a way to cancel the subscription. On August 1, I received a paper and that week I called the paper to cancel my subscription. Despite numerous attempts to get me to renew, the customer service rep finally said she would contact the appropriate person and the subscription would be canceled. However, the papers kept coming. Numerous people called with deals to renew saying they recorded the call. I fell harassed. I turned them all down. They said my subscription would be canceled. The Bee sent bills for papers I said I didn't want. I returned them marked subscription canceled on July 26. Now I have received a bill from a collection agency saying I owe $64.65 for paper I didn't want. And I'm still getting calls from Sacramento Bee solicitors to get a new subscription. Every time they call, I block that number, but like before someone else calls from another number. This is a weird business model - refusing to cancel products the customer doesn't want and trying to charge for unwanted products. When that doesn't work, they try to get the money anyway by threatening my excellent credit with a collections bill. Desired settlement: I want the collections to stop. I want my account balance with the Sacramento Bee to be zero. If it was reported to any credit agencies, I want it taken off. I want the phone calls to STOP.
