Safe Step Tubs of Minnesota Reviews (%countItem)

Run away from this company as fast as you can. They are very unethical. My mother, who has dementia, was solicited by them. After a sales phone call, a man showed up at her door. She let him in and agreed to buy the $18,000 tub. The man put her in his car and drove her to her bank, so she could get a cashier's check made out to Safe Step for the deposit they required - $9000. When I found the receipt a few days later, I called Safe Step and had much difficulty reaching a manager. After being transferred numerous times, I reached a manager and explained that my mother did not know what she was doing when she agreed to the purchase, could not afford the tub; nor did she know who the man was who took her to the bank; nor did she remember getting the cashier's check for him, and, to top it off, the salesman ordered the tub to be installed in an upstairs bathroom. My mother does not go upstairs. It's too hard for her, as she walks with the aid of a walker. It's also dangerous for her to go upstairs without help.
The "manager" refused to refund the deposit, even though this was weeks before the tub was due to be installed. After much discussion and with him yelling at me on the phone, he agreed to keep "just" $4500 With her cognitive deficits, my mother couldn't understand that losing that money would be better than losing another $13,500, so she went ahead with the installation three weeks later. The man showed up at her door again, put her in his car and drove her to the bank again, so he could get a cashier's check for the remainder of the money. This company preys on the vulnerable elderly and should be prosecuted and shut down.
And, yes, just like the other gentleman said, the door leaks.

On December 13, 2017, Kevin ***, from Safe Step Walk-In Tub Company came to my home to discuss the benefits of owning a walk-in tub for my disabled mother -in-law who almost died on 10-31-2017. Mr. was in our home for over 5 hours, selling us on the benefits and safety features of the tub. He stressed the safety and quality of the product and guaranteed that the head/lead installer, Mr. Nick ***, would contact us to schedule installation and be on site to do the installation himself. On 12-20-2017 I received a call from Mr. informing me that the tub delivery was delayed until 1-16-2018. Mr. was not present during the installation. Installers were unprofessional. After installation we waited until 8pm on 1-17-18 to check the tub for safety. We noticed that the tub was very narrow and hard to enter and exit. My wife got into the tub and as the water got higher and higher, she noticed that the water in the tub was very dirty, almost muddy. When she was done she opened the drain. She noticed that the water was not draining and after 10 minutes she called out to me because she was scared. Mr. told us the water would drain in 2-4 minutes at most. My wife's sister was in the room and I asked her to time how long it would take the tub to drain. The incident was recorded on my wife's iPhone. She only wanted to record drainage time. We did not know she would get stuck in the tub or that the incident would be captured on film. In the video you can hear her cries for help, wondering how she would get out. She was having a panic attack and I thought about calling an EMT. After an hour she had to stand on the seat of the tub, climb over the commode onto the step ladder I brought in. She was naked, shaking and due to the slippery area she hurt her ankle on the ladder. There water leakage from the tub door as well. My wife was traumatized, diagnosed with PTSD and has been in treatment ever since. The tub was unsafe and unusable.

In response to the complaint for Mr ***:

This complaint could have been taken care of within days of installation, our tubs come with a lifetime warranty and if there was any issues with the tub we absolutely would have resolved every issue this customer had. This customer chose never to call us and let us know that there were any problems with the installation or the tub. Our calls are logged here and there is absolutely no record of of this customer ever calling us. As soon as we received this complaint we reached out to the customer only to be hung up on immediately by the customer. It states in the complaint the customer didn't try to call us till May 18th which is 5 months after installation and that is also false. We value our customers happiness here at Safe Step but part of of that is the customer allowing us to rectify the issues that arise. We are absolutely willing to solve any issues Mr *** or his family may have ,all they have to do is talk to us.

thank you for your time

Customer Response • Jun 11, 2018

I am rejecting this response because: Mr. Kevin ***, Safety Consultant, was contacted by phone and email on numerous occasions, including Jan. 19 and again via email again on 2-1-2018. Mr. Alex *** was contacted by phone on Jan. 19 but would not provide us with contact information for the CEO, franchise owner, or anyone who could provide assistance. I tried on numerous occasions to get a phone number for management, the franchise owner, CEO, etc. but without success. After the incident my wife was diagnosed with PTSD and after receiving correspondence from a Mr. James *** from ***, she suffered a nervous breakdown. We have retained legal representation in regard to this matter. The fixture in question has been removed and replaced based on contracted plumbers recommendations to ensure a safe bathing environment for my mother-in-law. Due to my wife's condition, I'm asking that any and all representatives or associates of Safe Step cease and desist contacting me or my wife in any way.

The sales person insisted I was not too big for the tub I was to purchase on 10-08-14. Upon delivery and installation it was apparent the tub was too small, 11-20-14. The installation was not done in a professional manner, there was bad caulking and large gaps on edges. After talking to the owner he informed me that he would remove the tub and I was free of any payment obligations. The tub was removed on 12-10-14. On 02-12-15 I received a late payment notice from ***, Atlanta, GA 30329, for the amount of $8490.14. This loan was taken out in my name by Safe Step, I never signed anything or authorized this loan. I was on the phone with both companies, neither would work with the other one to remove this loan amount. I have personally talked to several people with both businesses. As of March 2018, I am still receiving bills from *** for a product that was removed from my home and I do not own.

To whom it may concern:

In reference to file #*** for a Mr. ***.

In response to the complaint filed by this customer on the purchase of a walk in tub from 4 years ago. According to our records this customer called with several complaints including some very personal ones. We don’t like customers being unsatisfied for any reason so we negotiated a reasonable fee to uninstall the tub and the customer agreed to this fee and all paperwork was exchanged. A refund was given and we have record of check cashed. The loan in question is still to be paid by the customer and they were explained that at the time. The customers were fully aware of this at the time. If the funds refunded were not used to pay down the loan or not that is not up to us that is strictly up to the consumer on how to use their refund check.

Thank you for your attention to this matter

This company did not deliver as promised. The product was purchased by my elderly parents (age 82 and 85) through a direct marketing solicitation on facebook. The sales representative was friendly and, to them, seemed to share the same values and opinion that the did. While the product was expensive, they were sold on the overall safety, convenience, peace of mind, and therapeutic value it would deliver them, The sales specialist, after all, appeared to be a man of integrity and the product he sold was backed by an A+ rated company who would walk the talk.

That did not happen. The installation seemed to go well. The Tub was installed, filled with water, the jets worked, and no leak was detected. After that, all went South. The Tub door leaked almost immediately as soon as it was occupied and used. The leak was not a few drops of water but rather a consistent flow of water leaking at the rate of approximately 16 oz per minute. Service was called and made some adjustments and the tub was once again declared leak free. What transpired after that was nothing short of a contractor from HELL. Phone calls were seldom answered. Messages were not returned from the sales person. The service representative returned close to a half a dozen times to investigate the repairs. The interaction between my parents and this company's representatives had even led to an insinuation, or direct accusation, that they were either imaging a non-existent problem, were responsible for the failure by improperly using the tub, or had simply had mistaken the tub leakage with a dropped glass or bucket of water. Buyer beware here and if you are an elderly consumer, you would be well advised to ask one of your adult children or younger friend or relative to help you process the situation and information, These type of tactics are commonly used by dishonest companies who can easily manipulate older consumers. The practice either borders or crosses the line on what most state agencies would classify as abusive to this demographic.

After several week and several service visits the tub door was repaired properly and, so far, has not leaked. The issue could only be replicated by filling the tub and having it occupied by a person. Until a video demonstrating this occurrence was sent, the company had become effectively non-responsive. The events that transpired with them were indicative of a company that does not understand basic hydrology and the that the force and pressure of mass in water is not the same as H20. In other words, the quality control and "certified testing" during installation did not even include a verification that the product was leak proof when it was occupied for its intended use. A sealed vessel filled with water and tested by turning on jets of a tub is not an acceptable quality control process and is indicative of, at the very least, an organization that requires more training in the composition and physics of water combined with mass. In the case of this experience, the reality was far different than the sales pitch. To date, no company representative has followed up on the status of the last repair or offered an apology for the behaviour or performance of their service. This instance may well be an exception, but it should be troublesome to everyone that the quality control process during installation does not include testing for defects for the intended use. This is a tub that is occupied by a person and not simply a bucket of water.

To whom it may concern,
Regarding the complaint submitted by Mr. and Mrs.’s son, Jerry, on February 9th 2018.
This customer, did at some point, click on an advertisement for our company. They also sent us an email asking for more information on a walk-in bath tub, at which time also requesting an appointment for our safety specialist to come out and show them our product. All calls that come through our appointment center are recorded, and verified to ensure customer satisfaction and compliance. At the time that the appointment was set, Mr. and Mrs. were asked if there was anyone else they would like to have at the appointment, meaning anyone that helps them make major decisions. They were very clear that “they make their own decisions.” Mr. and Mrs. were thrilled about the entire process. At one point, Mrs. even offered to let our safety specialist bring another customer to their house to show them the tub. All of our safety specialists go through extensive and continuous training. We have to date, installed thousands upon thousands of bathtubs and have very few complaints, ultimately resulting in a well-deserved A+ rating with the Revdex.com. Any and all complaints are resolved in a professional and timely manner, no matter the situation.
Jerry ***, Mr. and Mrs.’s son, now states that their tub was installed by the “contractor from Hell”. He also states that from the beginning, the installation process went perfectly and everything checked out. After the installation, is when Mr. and Mrs. noticed a leak from the door. The contractor was notified and, within a reasonable amount of time, returned to the home to make adjustment to correct the issue. There were several calls made between the customers and our service center over the next few weeks. Sometimes they noticed a leak, other times they did not. Our contractor returned to the home on 5 separate occasions, per the customer’s request, to check for a leak. The very last time the contractor was at the home, the customer lent him a pair of swim trunks, he then got into the bathtub and remained in the bathtub for 30 minutes while the customer watched and saw for himself that the tub was not leaking. After that, the customers were 100% satisfied and their tub was left in complete working order, and not one phone call has been received after that date. If there is ever another issue with Mr. and Mrs.’s bathtub, we along with our contractor, will be here to assist them.
