Saint's Cafe Reviews (1)

Review: I ordered a decaf coffee for here(in a mug); I handed them my card and was charged $2.05. The advertised price on their price board was clearly marked at $1.75. I asked why I was charged $2.05 and the barista stated that it was more work to perform a pour-over so they charge more. I state that this is not the correct price on their price board so they shouldn't do that. At this time I was already charged the $2.05, so I did not continue to fight. After I finished my decaf coffee, I went up to the counter to ask for a refill. The barista stated that the price was $1.75 for a refill, before charging me. The clearly advertised price on their price board was $1.00 for a mug refill. I stated that this was not the correct price and refused to pay $1.75 for a refill. The barista again stated that pour-overs were more work so they are charging more, therefore her manager stated they should charge more. I again said that is not the correct price and that it is not my fault price on the board for a decaf coffee is $1.00. After I said this the barista asked me to leave. I feel that this encounter is asinine , I did not raise my voice or say anything obscene during the conversation. But, since I refused to pay the advertised price of $1.00, for a refill I was evicted from the premises. This company takes part in false advertising and should be disciplined accordingly.Desired Settlement: I would like a $0.30 refund for the overcharged coffee that I purchased. I would also like a formal apology because I do anything wrong. It is not my fault that the price board was not updated. They should update the price board before enforcing higher prices for their drinks.Since I was given unnecessary hassle, I would also like a $10 giftcard as punishment for the company taking part in poor business practices and evicting me from the premises even though I did nothing wrong.

Response:

The following was written in response to the complaint given by the dissatisfied customer at Saint’s Cafe, and has been written by the employee who dealt with the customer first hand.

The customer approached the counter and ordered a decaf coffee, where it was charged as a $2.05 "To Go" amount. He proceeded to pay the amount and then questioned the reasoning behind not being charged a "mug price" (l0z.) of $1.75. My coworker explained to him that our decaf is a made-to-order cup of coffee, specifically calibrated for a 12oz. "To Go" cup and therefore, due to labor and a larger amount of product, charged at $2.05 (or a regular 12oz. size). I overheard the conversation and the slight push-back from the customer over the want of a mug (lOoz.) and not a 12oz. to-go cup. The customer then proceeded over to my area where I was making their decaf coffee, and again stated that he didn't know why he was paying $2.05 when a mug price was $1.75. I re-explained that our policy for decaf was different than that of a regular coffee, and although we make it on our "clover machine" it is not categorized as a "clover coffee" which would have been more expensive regardless. I explained that he was to receive 12oz. of fresh decaf and it was to be put in a 12 oz. "To Go" paper cup, but that if he preferred, I could put the coffee in a mug as long as he was fine with essentially losing the 2oz. that he paid for regardless. He said he preferred a mug and did not care that 2oz. were going to be discarded. He dictated several times that the board has a mug of coffee priced as $1.75 and that he didn't believe he should be paying this. I re-informed him that the board does not specify decaf as available at a "Mug" option, which is why the price is different. He then inquired about the price of a decaf refill, to which I replied that I would have to double-check with my coworker. He once again stated that he didn't see why he was paying for a 12oz. price, but that he was going to pay it anyway, took his coffee and sat down.

A few hours later, he returned with his mug and wanted a refill. I was at the counter and informed him that with decaf coffee there is no "refill" because there is no refill price for a 12oz. cup of coffee, and that even though he has a mug in his hands he did not technically buy a "Mug" of coffee, so he can not order a "Mug Refill". The customer then aggressively pointed out that our board said that a mug was $1.75 and a refill was written as $1.00. I replied that the board does not specify decaf as a Mug sized item. I once again stated that due to the process, wear on our machine, extra work for the employees, and extra product produced, our house policy is that decaf is only served and priced as a 12oz. "To Go" coffee. He continued to insist his decaf be charged the price that he thought he should pay. Refusing to pay the 12oz. price of $2.05, he demanded that I charge him $1.00. In order to keep the customer from escalating the situation, I said that I would charge him a mug price of $1.75, giving him a discount on the 12oz. price, even though it was not our policy. Still upset and not budging, he demanded that he receive a "Mug Refill" price. This hostile run-around continued for multiple minutes to where I finally, feeling completely harassed, uncomfortable, and nervous to his contentious attitude, told the customer that I refused to give him any more coffee and that he was making me and the environment uncomfortable and that no agreement was going to be made due to him not agreeing with our policy (and the correct $2.05 price represented on our board). I then requested that he leave the premises, to which he refused and
