Saints of the West Rescue & Adoption Reviews (1)

We wanted to adopt one of their Saint Bernards. They denied our application simply because we are "Renters". No other reason was given but that, except that dogs are often returned from renters and because people move. They never got a chance to know us - even though we currently we have 2 African Grey Parrots that we have had for over 15 years that have moved with us from Coast to Coast 4 times now in those 15 years. We have had them in previous rentals as well as homes that we've owned in the past. So renting a home should have absolutely no bearing on whether or not we would make good "parents" for one their dogs or not. They only went off of what they saw on the application and nothing else. That's discrimination at it's finest. Nothing was said on their application about renters need not apply - even their websites never stated anything of the sort.Product_Or_Service: Saint BernardsDesired SettlementI'm not sure how they can handle this situation. They have made up their mind without even getting to know us - all because we "Rent". The best outcome would be a dog - but I don't think that is going to happen.Business Response When the complainants first met with us at a fundraiser at [redacted] we were quite impressed with their knowledge of Saint Bernards and felt they would make a good home for one. We did receive an adoption application from them and the only negative aspect included on the application was the fact that they are renters. Due to the fact that almost all of the Saint Bernards that come into our rescue program do so because their current owners must move, we almost never place a dog with a family that rents their home. In the case of the complainants, we were anticipating making an exception simply based upon our initial meeting with them at Petco. We were again impressed with the fact they visited with us a second time, just a week later, at a breed awareness event we held at [redacted] in Verdi. Yes, seven days had passed since we first received their application for adoption and we had not yet responded to them. We could have responded more quickly but were in the process of finding a volunteer to travel to their home for an inspection in Dayton and also still had to talk with the owner of their home. About 9 days after their initial application was received we did discuss their situation with the owner of their home. We were made aware of the following issues:1. Their lease was about to expire and the renewal was unknown.2. Both the front yard and back yard were in a state not welcoming to dogs.3. The owner had just replaced the flooring in parts of the home with hardwood and does not want a dog there.4. The complainants had not yet discussed bringing a dog into the home with the owner.5. The lease does not allow pets.Obviously, after talking with the owner of the home, we made the decision we would not be placing a dog with the complainants. Our efforts are one hundred percent focused upon the needs and welfare of the dog. We did try to call them twice, leaving a message asking for a return call. These calls were not answered.
