painting & repair issues not done properly to where job done not professional as promised. We feel we were miss lead on the job that was done.

On Sept 13th we had Same Day Painting come repaint 2 bedrooms, bathroom & our living room. He said if you can't trust the owner who can you trust & we were promised the job would be done to our satisfaction, but we were lead to believe the colour would be better than what we got. I mentioned at 1st coat that we didn't like it as it had a purple tinge to it not grey as he promised. He said it would change after another coat & would be grey or he would change the colour for another $300+ to redo what he did. We said no we shouldn't have to pay for it as the colour wasn't what he said it would be. He guaranteed us the colour would change after another coat. Him supposedly being the "professional" we trusted his opinion, after all he was supposed be a professional. After the other coats the colour didn't change as he promised & we called him back to discuss this colour issue & for the patches he was to fix, paint drips & for the roughness/lumps in the paint on the walls. He fixed some of them but 1 patch in particular he worked on 3-4 times but there's still a bump on the wall after the paint dried. He kept adding filler where I believe should have been sanded down not more added.(this is still there & can see from 6-8 ft away). Also a part of the living room wall was never painted & coming back twice he never noticed & painted. He also said the colour would blend in good with the dining area but it doesn't. He said it would look good as he's done other places like this & we'd like it.
On the last fix we had this discussion & he said he wouldn't give any money back but would do it for an additional cost or paint an "accent" wall to help with the colour, we said absolutely not. He was to fill nail holes & paint the bathroom trim at no additional cost, pull the light fixture down to paint behind it so if we wanted to change the light fixture it would be painted. Neither was done & when I mentioned it to him he didn't seem happy. He was going to do the light fixture for us but mentioned the extra work to take it off. I did say don't worry about for now as I have to discuss with my wife on this paint colour issue & can deal with it then but hope you're replacing the light bulbs you broke, he did replace them.
He also would wear his outside shoes while doing the work & not putting on any shoe covers where I know a professional would've.
We've had a few people over where one of the 1st comments was, oh you painted it with a tinge of purple, that's different. This proved to us we were seeing this purple tinge & not just thinking we were. (we never told them we painted the walls so they never new we had it done).
We understand yes he did the painting but we want 1/2 the money back as we'll have to get someone else to fix the problems we still have as we do not trust he'll do the job properly as he's been back twice. We paid $800 cash so we are requesting $400 so we can get this fixed properly by a professional painter.

Same Day Painting Limited Response • Nov 02, 2018

Initial Business Response /(1000, 5, 2018/10/29) */
Prior to the job starting I completed a free paint consult, which is one of the services we provide to ensure our clients feel comfortable with the color they picked. I applied three different colors in three different areas of the house, all with different lighting so they could see how the color looked under all circumstances. I then gave the client 24-48 hours to make a decision on the color they liked and they were confident with the color called "Natural Grey"

After applying the first coat they mentioned that it had a purple tinge. I offered multiple solutions to what they were noticing. I told them that they will not be able to see the true color until two coats of paint was applied as they would still be seeing the original wall color coming through the first coat. I also suggested that if they wanted to change the color now, they could pay me for the labor and material I had already spent on the job. I think its incredibly reasonable for me to want to cover my costs on work and material used, after a client selected a color, didn't like it, and wants it changed. I don't see how the onus falls on us. Again, they picked the color.

After this discussion the client decided that they wanted to move forward with a second coat. What I said was true, the color did change, they admitted the color changed, but thought it needed a third coat. The quote I gave was only for two coats, I put a third coat throughout the entire project for free (roughly 400.00 in labor and material) because we always want to exceed clients expectations and ensure their satisfaction.

Upon completion of the free third coat, they said they were happy, and what a difference it made. We did a walk through, where generally, the client spots deficiencies and they are addressed right on the spot. All was good, they even payed before I left.

Roughly a week later the client contacted me and told me there were 5-6 deficiencies to address. I had just had gotten out of the hospital as my wife had our first child. But I told them I would be there as soon as time permitted. I came a few weeks later.

Upon arrival the client had picked the job apart, expecting the walls of a 30 year old home to look flawless. This is why during the estimate we set our deficiency standard to be 3 feet out - straight on (better then Revdex.com's standard infact).

The client had noticed things even he couldn't find upon my return. Looking at walls at certain angles, under certain lighting. Or things that were spotted when his wife was on her hands and knees cleaning the floor, when the sun was coming in just right... Even though he wanted what would generally be out of our scope of deficiencies I didn't want to argue and spent the next 4-6 hours addressing ever thing he pointed out.

The client again, said they were happy. Including about the repair they mentioned in this complaint. He also noted in this complaint a part of the living room wall was "never painted" I don't know what he is referring to and after coming back, I figured the client would have told us if they noticed we missed something. It would have been addressed then and there. It is true that I said I would paint behind the fixture, but upon taking it down the mounting plate for the fixture was the same size as the fixture its self. I mentioned this to the client and he said it was no big deal, again, complaining about it now. I did break a light bulb while taking the fixture down, I went to home depot and picked up a three pack because I noticed another one was rusting and figured it could be replaced too (even then going above and beyond, as that is how I like our company to be perceived). As for the trim in the bathroom, upon completion of the walk through I told the client I would have to come back because I didn't have left over semi gloss paint, again, he said it wasn't a big deal...I figured the free third coat on all the walls would more then offset the free painting of trim. When I came back for touch ups, we had the exact same conversation and he said the exact same thing. Now he's complaining about it.

At the end of the day:

-The client isn't satisfied because the " color isn't what I said it would be"... during the consult I painted large swatches of multiple colors on the wall, they picked from these samples, it has nothing to do with "what I said it would be" The color was right in front of them during the consultation and they had 24 hours to give me their decision. The client picked the color. They were confident in there choice, this is the reason we do the consult in the first place.

-The client rejected my proposal to change the color after the first coat.

-The client signed an estimate for the agreed to price for two coats (even dropped the price of the estimae by 80.00$). This was a 800.00 job that I spent an extra 100.00 on material and did an extra 300.00$ worth of labour for a third coat and 300.00$ worth of touch ups that are beyond our usual scope for free.

-The client payed me before I left the job, generally to be interpreted as a satisfied client

I don't see how the client being unsatisfied with a color they chose merits a refund when all the aforementioned actions were taken.

Initial Consumer Rebuttal /(3000, 7, 2018/10/30) */
(The consumer indicated he/she did not accept the response from the business.)
Our house is not 30 yrs old, it's 18 & the walls were painted about 8 yrs previous & looked better than when the job was done. The so called extra work was from his job where there was lumps of paint on the wall. I'm willing to bet from not cleaning the roller after 1st days painting. (Or covered the paint/roller properly). My wife was not on here hands & knees cleaning the floors as she's got a bad knee (waiting for possible surgery) & cannot do that. She was standing using a mop cleaning the wood floors from him walking with his shoes on without shoe covers. As far as the trim in the bathroom I said don't worry about right now until I talk to my wife about the painting & fixes he did where there was more than 5-6 spots lore like 8-9 plus the roughness in the painting. He never mentioned he needed other paint so another lie. He said let me know if there's anything after the paint has dried as it will be different from now. My wife told him about the spot & he said it's part of the kitchen, which it's not.
We were out of town for a few days & when we got back I contacted him about the issues we found.
He gaurenteed us the paint would be "grey" after the other coats, he talked us into doing it this way. Him supposed to be professional we "trusted" him with what he said why we agreed to him to do the other coats. He said he cannot see the purple tinge, all he sees is grey making us feel like we're losing it.
If it supposedly cost him $300-400 in labor for the other "free" 3rd coat for labour & supplies it's not adding up. The supposed $400 the repair work & labour caused from from him with the paint having lumps on the roller & transferring to the walls causing the roughness, then it's his fix to walls for a poor job & can't blame us for that. (I asked a professional painter)
The paint had a purple tinge not grey as he gaurenteed us it would be.
We also mentioned due to our darker walls if he was using paint with a primer, he said yes he'll do that. Well he never did use paint with a primer to help cover the dark walls & he said the first coat of paint was like using a primer & would do the 3rd coat acting like the 2nd coat of paint making it "grey" getting the purple tinge out at no additional cost.
When the blinds are open it's brighter & the purple tinge isn't as noticeable, when they're closed preventing sun from coming in we see the purple tinge. When it's night time it's more noticeable which we told him.
Attached is a pic of the part my wife told him he missed but was to him part of the kitchen, as you can see it's not part of the kitchen.
He needs to reimburse us for 1/2 the funds so we both can move on &! can have the professional painter come fix this issue.

I have never used a professional painting company before but I needed my rental property to be painted quickly and to keep the cost low. Jullien was able to work around my schedule and was able to come out for an estimate the next morning. They were able to complete both levels in one day and did a great job matching the paint. I would recommend this company if you want your painting needs done efficiently and professionally.
