Review: I dropped off my Polaris Jet ski at the Santa Barbara Motor Sports store in Goleta, CA for repairs. Specifically, I was experiencing problems with water in the tank. In my efforts to identify the problem, I had also purchased a new battery. When I went to pick up my jet ski, I was informed the problem had been fixed. I paid and took my jet ski home. Due to my work load, I did not have an opportunity to drive my jet ski until about 3 months later. When I did drive it, I discovered water again in the tank. The jet ski was not used more than 2 times from the date of repair. As well, I discovered my new battery had been switched out for a used one. I called in the shop and told them about both situations. They indicated, I would need to provide a receipt for the battery. I was not able to locate but nevertheless felt I had been cheated by this store. Then I decided to take my jet ski into the store for an evaluation of work done or not done. They refused to evaluate my jet ski and claimed 3 months had already passed from time work had been completed. I then stated that I would be taking this matter to the next level and filing a small claims case with the local court. I only made this statment after I felt ignored and not heard. The owner was rude and stated he was not interested in working on my jet ski since I had made the statement of filing my complaint with the local court. As a consumer, I feel lied to and taken advantage by Santa Barbara Motor Sports. On top of this, I paid them $700 and they did not have copies of this on file. I'm questioning their accounting practices and integrity. I don't feel they should be allowed to treat customers this way and ask for additional money for a job they failed to complete. The treatment I received for expressing my concerns and complaint was uncalled for.Desired Settlement: I am asking to be refunded for the cost of the service and repair work aledgedly performed on my Polaris Jet Ski. The work was not completed and my new battery was replaced with a used one.

Business

Response:

First of all, everyone here at SBM considers customer service the corner stone of our business. We strive to give our customers the benefit of the doubt in resolving every issue because our reputation matters. In this case, three different SBM employees spent one hour each trying to resolve complainant’s allegations by providing him with the necessary documentation to which complainant did not agree with.

We serviced complainant Polaris watercraft on September 14, 2012 so the implication that this service was performed three months ago is false. Complainant’s Polaris contained water in his crankcase which he reported to us as being caused by a rollover of his water craft. We flushed the oil, as well as, adjusted the idle before informing complainant that when an engine is submerged in water there is no guarantee that all the water was purged. We can only assert that no water was visible in the crank case on 9/14/2012. As for the price, complainant spent $377.98 after a $50 discount we gave him because he claimed he was out of work. We provided complainant a copy of his signed credit card receipt to which he could provide no contrary documentation. Complainant accused SBM of double charging/overcharging his credit card but he could not provide evidence. If complainant believes he was double charged, he could easily submit a claim with his credit card provider who will track this for him. As for the battery, SBM staff called the company where complainant claims he purchased his battery who reported to us that they had no record of a sale to complainant. We would have offered complainant a new battery as a goodwill gesture had he not made his threatening and false allegations.

Complainant requested SBM to perform a free inspection of his water craft. In consideration of the following factors, we felt that any further interaction, or service rendered would only provide this complainant with additional opportunities to misrepresent our intentions, and our quality of work. Based our experience thus far with this complainant, he is seeking retribution and not resolution.

1. Service was performed almost one year ago and complainant reported he used the water craft two to three times after our work was performed.

2. Complainant threatened legal action.

3. Complainant accused SBM of switching his battery.

4. Complainant accused SBM of overcharging and double charging his credit card, but could not provide any contrary evidence against the signed credit card receipt provided by SBM.

5. Complainant accused SBM’s mechanic of performing and charging work outside the scope of his signed work order.

6. When a customer threatens court action, this leaves us no alternative but to provide our evidence to a Trier of Fact to resolve the problem.

Please find attached, complainant’s signed work order, credit card receipt, and repair order invoice.
