Santa Fe Clay Reviews (%countItem)

I paid $975 for a 5-day ceramics workshop to be held at Santa Fe Clay in early August 2019. The business told participants where to stay (***) for walking access to the workshop. Two weeks before the workshop was to begin, I received an email saying that the owners were moving their business to 5 Banana Lane, a considerable distance by highway from the hotel (and a location that does not have a nearby hotel). All of the problems ensued from the owners' abrupt venue change. I had to drive a long distance to get to the new location and thus had to rent a vehicle. When participants arrived for the first session, some of the basic equipment required for the workshop was not present. The ceramics workshop area did not have running water for cleaning our hands while working (there was one sink in the bathroom but the ceramics sink was not hooked to plumbing). Kilns to fire our practice work were not properly operational, as a result of which on the final day we did not have completed work to take home, and the owners would not mail our work without further payment and our credit card numbers. The owners were rarely present during the week, and their attitude made it clear that this workshop was essentially getting in the way of their business move. A lot of instructional time was lost because we had to wait for the owners to try to fire our work and to unpack boxes so they could look around for the right chemicals to make glazes. Some of the correct chemicals were never located. When we calmly explained to the owners that they had not met the terms of the workshop agreement, they brushed off our issues defensively and ultimately did not comply with our request for even partial refunds. I have attended many workshops all over the country at major crafts centers, and this performance was way out of line with how these things work and with how Santa Fe Clay has performed in the recent past. The artist conducting the workshop was angry and embarrassed that he could not teach us all that he had intended and what Santa Fe Clay had advertised because of the owners' delinquency and inconsiderateness.

Santa Fe Clay Response • Sep 11, 2019

We're happy to offer this customer a 50% discount on her next workshop, but we feel her request for a 50% refund is extreme. The instructor and participants had everything they needed for an exciting creative experience. Our recent move was certainly challenging, but the studio was set up and ready for guests before the start of the workshop. We made every effort to accommodate inconveniences the move may have caused (offering shuttle service to the new venue, for example), and the impression we had was that everyone in the group was having a good time. (Claims that we were rarely on the premises are unfounded.) In any case, we hope the customer decides to join us at another event in the future.
