Sarasota Memorial University Parkway Urgent Care Center Reviews (%countItem)

Edited e-mail I sent to supervisor Beverly B.,

I am emailing you regarding a billing issue for my wife. She visited the Sarasota Memorial Urgent Care on the corner of University Parkway and Honore Ave. on Sunday, June 23rd, 2019. She was seen for an eyelid chalazion and was given an antibiotic prescription by Dr. Mark N. with no extra tests. He spent very little time with my wife and did not have the best bedside manner.

Regardless, when we went to check out I asked the girl at the desk how much we owed. She said we are sending it to your insurance and you will be billed. She was chatting with my wife because they realized my wife gave her swimming lessons when she was little. My mother in law, was there witnessing as well. We wanted to pay the $150 office visit but our money was not accepted.

Therefore, I was expecting to receive a discount off the $150 urgent care office visit. Instead in July I received a bill for $434. I called the medical billing advocate on the statement and asked them to reprocess the bill for $150. Instead they sent me another bill in August for $434. This was totally unacceptable, as we would have never gone if we knew how much they would have charged. We are in tremendous debt and cannot afford this type of bill. We only went because my wife had an interview the next day and the chalazion was seemingly not improving and becoming unsightly, plus she has vision problems in her other eye.

Today, I went back to the urgent care in person to pay them $150 in person in good faith. They said again that they could not take our money. They suggested that I call 941-917-1540. I told them I already called that number without any satisfaction. They then suggested I contact you as a manager to resolve the situation.

I'm very frustrated with all of this runaround and hassle. I feel like at this point I have wasted so much time with this and we have been treated so poorly that I would like the bill waived altogether. A nearby Urgent Care costs $100

We do not accept the response from the business. Sarasota Memorial Urgent Care continues the same song and dance without helping the patient. They have nearly tripled the cost of the office visit from $150 to $434 which is the equivalent of price gouging. Instead of using common sense they are standing behind their insurance contract. Their blatant disregard for the financial well being of their patients shows that they really don't care. A few hundred dollars could be easily written off by a large hospital, whereas it would significantly impact our budget. A reasonable charge should be negotiated in this case. On fairhealthconsumer.org a usual and customary charge for an outpatient in-network visit in our area is $103.

We were willing to pay the $150 on the day of service, and have offered that many more times since then. The clerk said she would file it with our insurance and we expected a discount below $150 but instead the charge tripled. Now we are only willing to pay $103. If this hassling continues we are not willing to pay anything at all for the time, energy, and distress this has caused our family.

RE: Case # ***

Dear Revdex.com:

This letter is in response to our customer's rebuttal of our initial response letter dated October 29th, 2019 regarding the above case number.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital has reviewed the rebuttal and has conducted a thorough investigation of the claims made by the patient's husband. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused the patient and their husband. We stand by our first review and are issuing this final response on behalf of the facility.

The patient instructed us to bill their insurance at the time of their visit by initialing the "Submit to Insurance" option on the paperwork that they completed. The patient did not initial the "Prompt-Pay Discounted Rate" option on the paperwork that they completed. The option that the patient selected, and initialed, states that patients are not eligible to select the prompt-pay discounted rate after today's visit. In addition to initialing the option that instructed us to bill their insurance, the patient also signed this form acknowledging the above.

We billed the patient's insurance at their request and the insurance processed the claim. The amount of patient responsibility is dependent upon each patient's individual benefit plan as dictated from their insurance company. We follow the payment advice from the insurance company and the charges that have been billed have been approved by the insurance company as fair and reasonable charges for the services provided.

We appreciate the honest feedback from this patient and her husband, as well as the opportunity to assist the Revdex.com in clarifying their claims. If the patient has any further questions, we welcome the opportunity to further discuss them at (941) 917-1234.

Sincerely,

Jen S., MHA
Director, Ambulatory Services

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
We do not except the businesses response. We did not know understand or appreciate what we were signing or initialing. It was not properly explained by the staff at the urgent care as my wife was frantic with one eye closing was swelling and her other eye already being legally blind at birth. The business is blatant disregard for our situation shows a continued lack of caring. They should take the word Care off of their urgent care sign. We will not be submitting any payment whatsoever due to this harassment. We were willing to pay $150 many times before this.We are considering Taking this to the Florida attorney general and going to the press with this triple charging and raping of customers. We would prefer the Revdex.com to handle this on our behalf as we do not have time for this any longer.
