Dear Ms. [redacted], We are very sorry to hear that you have concerns with your recent interactions at SCA Credit Services, Inc. We take all patient concerns very seriously and use all feedback in our continuous improvement efforts. Specifically, you shared that you had difficulty receiving a detailed...

statement of your charges and payment history, and you are concerned about the legality of SCA providing collection services for Carilion Clinic and felt the staff member you spoke to at SCA was rude. Please allow me to elaborate: Detailed billing statements contain protected health information. We take patient privacy extremely serious and do require written permission for the release of those statements. We understand this can be inconvenient, and we are sorry if this appeared as an obstacle to you in receiving the statement. We are committed to protecting all our patients' privacy and hope you understand and forgive us for asking that you take the extra steps to receive that statement. Our organization is dedicated to serving and improving the health of our community in an ethical manner. We follow current IRS rules and regulations for charitable hospitals that own different types of external businesses including collection agencies. We strive to not only meet, but exceed our patients' expectations. Please accept our apology if you felt we did not do that in your interaction with us. We want your next interaction to be exceptional and hope we will be able to keep you in our Carilion Clinic family. We sincerely thank you for giving us this opportunity to review your concerns and make improvements for the future. Should you need any further assistance please feel free to call us at [redacted]. One of our patient advocates will be happy to assist you. Sincerely, SCA Credit Services, Inc.

Dear Mr. [redacted],SCA never received the dispute letter you mailed.   Detail bills have been mailed to you to validate the debt.  We have put these accounts on hold until they can be resolved.  Once you receive the information you requested if you have questions please feel free to...

Dear Ms. [redacted]Currently you have two accounts at SCA:  1. [redacted] in the amount of $24.01 ($23 principle and $1.01 accrued interest.  This account listed at SCA on 11/28/14.2. [redacted] in the amount of $265.85 ($250 principle and $15.85 accrued interest.  This account listed at SCA...

on 12/26/14. Several letters have been mailed and we tried to contact you by phone in February, April, June and July of 2015.  You called our office in Nov. 2015 stating these were on your credit.  We went over the accounts with you and you refused payment.  You contacted SCA again on Jan. 28th, 2016 refusing to pay and stating [redacted] was responsible. SCA informed you, per our client, these services were denied by the ** due to “not a medical emergency.”  You contacted our office again Feb. 8th, 2016 wanting to know why the amounts were more.  We tried to explain to you that the principle balance is the same; however, the accounts are accruing interest on the unpaid principle balance. At this time I have had the interest completely removed from your accounts.  Your total account balances are $23 and $250 for a combined total of $273.  We will be glad to work with you on a payment plan to get these resolved.  If you have questions as to why your insurance didn’t pay, you will need to contact the **.  Please contact me directly if you have further questions.Sincerely Yours,[redacted]SCA Manager[redacted]cc:  Revdex.com of Western VirginiaTHIS COMMUNICATION IS FROM A DEBT COLLECTOR

You currently have 5 accounts with SCA that total $483.67.  Four accounts listed in Oct.  2016 and (1) listed in Aug. 2014.  Our records indicate that SCA has mailed 5 letters to you over the span of a couple of years.  We have attempted to contact you by phone numerous times....

At times there was no answer and at times we left a message for a return call.  You have to call back using the phone number left in the voice message not the number that shows on your phone.  If the accounts remain unpaid after 120 days from the list date, they are reported to your credit file.  You mention (3) accounts in your complaint.  I do not know which (3) you are referencing since you have a total of (5) accounts.  However, if you will contact me by phone I will be more than happy to work with you on a payment plan to get these cleared up.  As the individual accounts get paid off they are completely removed from your credit file.  If you are able to pay the principle balances in full I will drop all accrued interest. Please feel free to contact me as soon as possible.  I look forward to hearing from you.  I can go over the accounts with you and also verify the address and phone number we have for you are correct.Sincerely Yours,[redacted]SCA Manager[redacted]

I sca credit services left a voicemail on a unverified number stating my full (including middle) that I was being contacted by a collection agency to collect a debt which is definitely an FDCPA violation to leave that on a voicemail. Considering Sca is collecting on medical debit and have to follow all Hippa and FDCPA laws you would think they would know better.

Review: I received a letter from SCA about a medical bill that had been sent to collections. A medical bill which had never been sent to me. I disputed the debt according to their instructions and awaited documents to verify I owed a debt, who I t was owed to and how much was owed. I received none of those things. Instead I was sent a letter with an additional $200 worth of debt, and a very threatening message. I have yet to receive the information that SCA is required by law to provide to me.

If you get contacted by this firm I would suggest hiring a lawyer because their practices leave them 100% open to suit for damages under the FDCPA.Desired Settlement: The only outcome possible is that my debt is explained to me, or thrown out. Any negative remarks made on my credit report are removed immediately and I am compensated for my time dealing with their ineptitude.

Review: I looked at my credit score and saw an unknown amount of money charged from this company. I looked up their contact information and have made several attempts to get in touch with them regarding these charges on Friday, Aug 29th. The representatives kept hanging up the phone. I am a college student trying to figure out what this derogatory standing is and SCA Credit Services refuses to assist me.Desired Settlement: I want an explanation of the charges or have the derogatory comment removed from my credit score immediately.

Review: I have a 8 small amounts in collections. Totaling 540.00 ..I had been injured and fell far behind on medical that my insurance didnt cover. I began trying to get my credit straight and sent 400.00 to SCA which would have covered most all of the debt. Wanted to pay in full but friends had warned me not to as they have had trouble paying then SCA not removing the open collections status from their credit reports. Sure enough they wont remove any of them. I have written to them on more than one occasion asking nicely and offering to the pay the remainder if they attend to this. Evidently they do not care if they do their job properly. Someone sent me an email asking the account number and I sent it. I know they are not working for me...but it seems they would handle this to get the rest of the money. I will not pay a cent more until they have removed some of the accounts in collection.Desired Settlement: I want some of the open collections statuses removed from my credit report.

Business

Response:

Accounts listed with SCA are not reported to the Credit Bureau for 60 days. You have 60

days to pay off your debt and clear your account. After 60 days whatever balance remains

on your account will be reported as an unpaid collection. It is not SCA's policy to have

collection accounts removed from your credit report because you pay them off. We do

send a file to the credit bureau on the 15th of each month to have account statuses updated.

If you have paid off a particular account, once reported and updated your credit report

should reflect paid in full and or reflect zero balance.

If you have accounts on your credit report that you have paid in full that are still showing

unpaid or open as you say, please supply me an account number so I can have that

corrected immediately. It is very important to us to make sure your credit report reflects

accurate information.

Please feel free to call me. I will be glad to assist you and answer any questions I can.

Sincerely Yours,

Collection Manager

THIS COMMUNICATION IS FROM A DEBT COLLECTOR

This is a horrible business. They don't seem to understand how the FDCPA works. I myself, was a debt collector once and know the ins and outs of the process. These people play fast and loose with the rules, that is, when they even decide to follow them. They called my cell phone with a computer that then told me to 'please wait while you are connected' then dropped the call. Calling that number back just got a busy signal. That is beyond rude and a waste of my time. Google got me their main office where I proceeded to tell them I was declaring bankruptcy. Apparently, having retained an attorney and their name and number wasn't enough, they also wanted a case number, which I don't know. So they talked over me saying they would continue to call until they got it. That is not how that works at all. They can either contact my attorney or face repercussions if they contact me again.

If you have a debt I sincerely hope it doesn't end up with these people. They will browbeat you and attempt to make you feel stupid. Try and pay your original creditor instead of these people. They are horrible.

Review: My account was turned over to sca credit services and before I found out the [redacted] had accepted my account I mailed a payment to sca. I got a bill from [redacted] and it's for the original amount so I called sca to see about getting my money back and I pretty much get the run around. I even faxed a copy of the check I wrote to them which had a stamp on the back from their company showing it had been deposited to the bank they use.Desired Settlement: Just want my $100.00 back. No reason for them to keep it if my account isn't with them any more.

Regards,

These are the sorriest people I have ever dealt with in my life.. First bill I had with them, was a bill that had been paid for three months. I actually had to fax a payment receipt to get them to stop calling me house.. Then I had to call the original debtor to get them to verify that this had been paid and they did not understand why the bill had been sent there in the first place...

Second bill, was A bill I was making payments on with [redacted] Health.. Someone in the office of [redacted] did not mark this bill as a payment plan and sent it to SCA.. I only owed $45 left on the bill, so I told them I would pay it off on 12/22.. With Christmas I forgot, I realize I should have remembered but in laws were driving me crazy, and to much going on, sometimes it happens. They called me and I was burning my dinner on the stove, yes it was like 6:30 at night, so I simply asked for common courteous to call me back in five minutes.. They told me they were going to mark my bill as refusal to pay.. By law I thought they were not allowed to do that, but I guess being who they are they can do whatever they want and get away with it.. I told them they were denying a form of payment offered, they said it was not their problem.. I told them I will pay [redacted] then in the morning.. They said that I could not do that, I could only pay them.. I called [redacted] health the next morning,(today) and paid it. No this business is not ethical and not legit, they will lie as noted in my stated.. Refusal to pay is not can you call me back so I don't burn my kids dinner. They lied... Plain and simple. The courts should be made aware of these tactics of this practice, so when people go to court for bills they realize this agency is not on the up and up... The bill is paid and I did not have to pay this slack serving sorry rear ended service... They are going to get a nice letter now that says do not call for any bills Anyone in my house hold owns. All bills are to be sent in writing. I want physical paper, they are harasser's and liars in my opinion..

Review: My credit report says one amount, they told me on the phone a different amount and sent me a bill for another amount. I believe they are practicing illegal business practices. I have supported notes and documentations.Desired Settlement: A bill for the correct amount so I can give to [redacted] to pay, thank u

Review: I have been turned over to this company for collections. I have sent 3 payments, that have never cleared my bank. At first, she told me that the payments had been applied on May 8, 2013, then, she informed me that they had returned on 5/16. "[redacted]" told me to call the bank to see why they were returned. THEY WEREN'T, this company just isn't applying them to my debt. Trying to explain that I called the bank to find out why, the banker shows NO RETURNS EVER on my account, but that is heresay, according to "[redacted]".Desired Settlement: If this company is unable to accept and apply payments properly, they need to be shut down!

Response:

I received your message needing more explanation as to my complaint against SCA Credit. I would like to ask for an explanation as to why my payments have not been applied. I did send SCA Credit a certified letter requesting written documentation as to why my payments were not applied but I have yet to hear from them. I can be reached at ###-###-####[redacted]... Response:

The account in question was listed with SCA on 5/7/13 in the amount of $3,095. You submitted a $20 payment via the SCA Credit Services web site on 5/8/13. That payment was reversed on 5/16/13 due to an “invalid account number”, this payment never made it to your bank this is why your bank shows no returns. Please see attached supporting documentation. Your account balance is still $3,095 with an additional $17.30 in accrued interest charges. To date this is the only payment that SCA has received. If you have made other payments to SCA that have cleared your bank, you will need to provide SCA proof of payment so we can find those payments and get them applied to your account. If you have any further questions please contact our office.Sincerely Yours,[redacted]Collection Manager

Consumer

Response:

I have reviewed the response offer made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below. I DID NOT submit a payment via the SCA Credit Services web site. I mailed a check to the address on my Carilion statement, which happened to be the SCA address. Enclosed were two checks for two separate accounts with Carilion, one was credited and the other was not. The one for the $3095 balance has never been credited. Actually another check was mailed to the same address in April that wasn't ever credited. I spoke with [redacted], a manager, at SCA Credit and she told me that it had been returned for an invalid account number. She couldn't, however, tell me if it was an invalid SCA account number or an invalid bank account number. Wouldn't it be logical if it were for an invalid SCA number to apply the payment to the only account turned over to them in MY NAME at MY ADDRESS, which is what is on my checks? Considering I have a valid bank account that has NEVER had any issues... I did request in writing, via certified mail, documentation regarding the checks that were "returned". "[redacted]" told me to contact my bank, which confirmed that there has never been anything returned on my account, but according to her that is heresay. Since it is not a bank issue, it MUST be an SCA issue that I would like corrected. If my checks are bad, why haven't they been returned to me by SCA? They want payment, I want proof that it is being applied!Regards,[redacted]

Business

Response:

The account in question was listed with SCA on 5/7/13 in the amount of $3,095, client account #[redacted], SCA account #[redacted]. After further investigation I have discovered that you did not enter a $20 payment thru the SCA web site on or around May 7th and I apologize for that statement. From what I can tell, your mail in payment for $20 was received by SCA on May 7th for client account #[redacted] which listed with SCA the same day. That payment was then processed electronically by a new employee; she apparently entered an invalid bank account number when processing the payment. Your paper check was then shredded and destroyed. Because the bank account number entered by our employee was wrong the bank never received or processed this payment. Your bank statement for May should reflect that the check never cleared and there would not be any deductions from SCA for $20. The balance of this account remains to be $3,095. Our normal process for mail in payments is to deposit the actual check and not enter these electronically. This has been addressed with the new employee who handled your $20 mail in check payment. I sincerely apologize for the frustration and inconvenience this has caused you. We will be happy to work with you on a payment arrangement. If you have any further questions please contact me directly at ###-###-#### extension #[redacted]. Review: I received a letter from this company over 2 - 3 months ago saying that I needed to confirm with them that my debt was legitimate with their company. I only deal with the hospital in these matters. I contacted [redacted] to confirm that my Financial Assistance forms were accepted and they were. I never heard another peep out of anyone. I then received a letter last week that stated if I did not contact them within 10 days that SCA Credit services would seek legal assistance. I contacted them on Monday and was asked to call back today. So that is what I did. They informed me that since my debt has reached this point it is no longer eligible for any type of payment plan. I file Charity Forms every two months to [redacted], I do my best to take care of my bills, and I have begged and borrowed to try and keep caught up. I am the only working individual in my household and for this company to not even be willing to work with me is rediculous! They informed me that the only thing I could do is pay $100 a month and I informed the woman that at the end of the month I am barely able to hold on to $50 and that is if I am lucky. For a company that seeks to "Help" with medical bills this is such a crock. I don't beleive them when they say that they tried to reach out through several letters...Desired Settlement: I want these bills sent back to [redacted] and them to be readjusted according the Financial Assistance that was offered to me and I want to deal with them directly and not with this company. I want the opportunity to pay my bills to the company that I originally accrued them with.

Our client, [redacted] Clinic, has placed 8 different accounts with SCA that total $2,029.70. I have confirmed with [redacted] that your financial application was in a pending status as of Nov. of 2015 due to documents they had not received. [redacted] mailed a letter to you on Nov. 18th and another letter on Nov. 25, informing you your application was pending and they needed to receive your 401K statement to be able to complete their review. The requested documents were never received by [redacted].According to [redacted], you have 30 days from the date you submit your financial application to provide all documents needed for review. Since this did not happen you will need to start the process all over and reapply to be considered for financial assistance. SCA will be glad to put your accounts on hold for 60 days to allow to you time to reapply for financial assistance. If you qualify for any type of assistance your accounts will be adjusted accordingly. Our client has supplied a link that you can access to begin the application process. h[redacted]Sincerely Yours,[redacted]SCA Manager[redacted]

Regards,

THIS IS A SCAM

I have been very frustrated with this company and their tact or lack of handling issues. I sent certified mail a request for a copy of the contract and verification of the debt for their legal right to obtain this debt on [redacted] behalf, I received no such postage however I did receive a phone call during hours in which I was unavailable. I do not wish to talk or negotiate on the phone with this business and I wish they would respect my choice. I also was very disgruntled when asking confirmation on my information's privacy status and that was not assured either. I do not feel comfortable discussing personal finances when I feel that my sensitive personal information could be jeopardized.

I also received a phone call from a gentleman who only stated his name and a return phone number, I was not given any company name and it was painfully aggravating having to spend an hour playing Sherlock Holmes tracking down the purpose and identity of this caller.

Since then I have made detailed records of each contact encounter, they claim that I have made promises to pay (Which I have not) they have also threatened me with legal action on this case. The methods of which they use to obtain collection and resolve accounts must not be very successful, at least for certain consumers such as myself who try obtaining even basic documentation on their accounts is a war. I suppose that writing this article here does not do much, however I feel this company would have better end results if they just followed the normal legal process for getting the verification of this debt. I understand that it has been since the 30 day window however I am still entitled to certain rights.

I also do not agree with this company obtaining interest on accounts for collection, this is why I would like to see the contract to see if that is within the limitations of when the debt was "sold". I do not like companies that are not transparent with their "customers". I have learned an extremely valuable lesson as this is my true first experience with an account in "collections" and it has made QUITE the impression.

Review: SCA Credit Services representative called my business, asking to speak to an employee during his work shift. I asked who she represented. She ([redacted]) stated it was a private matter, she did not want to reveal the purpose of the call for privacy reasons. This was deceptive, attempting to gain access to my employee while he was on the clock. I have added them to the blocked calls list.

Business

Response:

An SCA Representative did attempt to contact the employee in regards to a personal business matter at the place of employment. The SCA Representative did not give the information about the purpose of the call due to federal laws prohibiting SCA Credit Services from disclosing the nature of any call except to the called party. We understand now that this employer does not wish us to contact this employee on the job and we have removed this phone number from our records.

Review: The called to saY I owed a bill to them and threatened to send me collection agency, I called the hospital they do not have me ever being in their system and this is the # the call came from ###-###-####. I stupidly gave my last 4 of my SSn# to them and they hung up.Desired Settlement: Find out who called and make sure my credit will not compromised.

Business

Response:

After talking with the patient and gathering as much information as possible regarding this instance we have come to the determination that the collection agency SCA has called the patient. We verified with SCA that the phone number that called her is one of their phone numbers. We did determine that it was not in regards to a [redacted] account number based on us not having the patient in our system. SCA did make the call, but seem to believe that they had reached the wrong [redacted] after verifying the last four digits of her social and they then disconnected the call. I have spoken with the patient and made her aware of the situation and she is now satisfied and feels much more at ease to know she was not the victim of a scam.
