Scarr Funeral Home Reviews (2)

It's too bad this review makes you pick a satisfaction rating - for me it would be -0-, nada! Why do you sign and pay for an end-of-life CONTRACT? My Mom signed a contract with Scarr in 1998 and paid for everything she wanted; which was a Mass and hymns at a church in Suffern, NY; newspaper obituaries in Rockland and Orange counties; a two day viewing, with the two viewings per day as her brothers and sister live in other States. Just as an aside, she also paid for her Cemetery plot and arrangements. The only thing she received was a four hour viewing with a next day burial. No obituary in the two newspapers she wanted; no Mass with hymns, nothing! This is an atrocity, failing to abide by a contract and a dereliction of duty. It was snowing during the viewing which was 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. It was snowing even worse the next day of her burial. You would think Scarr Funeral Home, “A Family Tradition since 1920”, which Lenny Scarr is so proud of, would check the weather and delay the viewing and burial. When they finally reach the burial site the gate was locked! So one of their associates had to go to the Town Hall and have the gates opened. This is pure irresponsibility. Since I live in another State, even I couldn’t attend “the viewing or burial”. I called the funeral home twice and spoke to someone named Carmine, who had a smart-a** answer for everything. I asked why my Mom’s obituary was not in any newspapers (she was well known in Rockland, Westchester and Orange Counties) and why they weren’t having a Mass as per her instructions. His answer was prices go up (I say not when you sign a contract!) and she wasn’t a congregate of the church! There wasn’t a priest available anyway he said. Just another phony excuse! Five of us went to the church’s school and church for 8 years and as long as my Mom lived in Suffern for many, many years afterward she was still going to this church. She then moved to a different county. Then he told me he had a meeting with three of the siblings and they signed off negating my Mom’s contract. Out of six children, he told me four were there and it was a majority vote. What is a majority vote as it concerns a paid End-Of-Life contract? That’s insane! Only three of the six children were aware of this meeting and one of them signed an absent siblings name. So either a sister-in-law or a brother-in-law acted as the fourth child for a “majority vote”. Six children equal six children. The fact that the three other siblings were not invited to this “special meeting” is pure evil, a sin and a crime on the part of the funeral home. Lenny Scarr swears that that was no other paperwork was signed besides my Mom’s contract signed by my Mom and paid for. He is a lying thief! The second time I called this Carmine, I asked for a copy of my Mom’s death certificate. He told me to get it from my sister, who along with the rest of my siblings have isolated me from the family. I told him this and he said to work it out. I finally paid $10.00 to the Town to get a certified copy.
My Mom died in November, 2018 and to this day in July, 2019, I am still reeling over this transgression and negligence! I need closure and called recently to speak with this Carmine and got Lenny Scarr. He promised to call me the next morning and he, I, and Carmine would be on the phone to work out my conflicts. Never heard a word back; I called two times that afternoon and they weren’t available. Whoever is reading this review and the other bad reviews (there are NO good reviews) would be unwise to contact Scarr for anything such as an End-Of-Life contract or at the loss of your loved one. Their webpage sounds so loving and understanding. IT’S ALL AN OUTRAGOUS LIE!

Review: Scarr Funeral home was chosen to handle my brother's services, my brother passed away in ** and upon meeting with funeral home the agreement was this was a "FULL SERVICE" arrangement and Scarr, located in NY, would communicate and coordinate everything with the funeral home in **.

There was an initial delay in releasing my brother's body which, far the fact, I learned was due to Scarr not paying the other funeral home on time - despite me calling Scarr several times.

Once that was passed (took an extra 4 days due to weekend WHICH is unacceptable since Scarr wanted full payment up front!)

After the service, which was acceptable, I have been waiting and asking (several emails and phone calls) for my brothers death certificate. It is now May (my brother passed away in October of last year) and nothing.

After very limited communication with [redacted]! I was told! and promised! and retold I would receive the certificates last month. Nothing.

He last several days I have been calling [redacted] , fuming as this is UNACCEPTABLE, to no avail. Phone calls or emails are not returned and he has his associate, Carmine, reach out.

I was told that ** sent certificated last week. Upon e calling **, I was told certificates were sent last November and he had not been in communication with Scarr Funeral home.

And still nothing or the courtesy of a call back!!!!! My brothers daughter needs to receive social security benefits and I have run out of patience and need some help!

I have called ** and asked them to order certificates, which I had to pay $70.00 for. I do intend on collecting this from Scarr Funeral home and will donate to my niece.

The point is that full services were not rendered, communication lacks, professionalism is non existent with this place.Desired Settlement: I want the courtesy of call back from [redacted], and not his middle person.

I want a refund of the extra expense of $70.00 I had to pay , not to mention my time in finishing a job they were hired AND paid to do!
