Review: I have contacted Scientific American Magazine about the inability to download the iPad version of the magazine which is part of my subscription. This download issue has been a problem since, at least, the beginning of this year. Many users are complaining of the same issue as can be witnessed in the review section of the iPad application on iTunes. Yet, there seems to be no movement on Scientific American's part to fix this problem.

My most recent email from customer support explained that the problem lies with a bug in [redacted]'s software causing Adobe software to have a problem with a slow internet connection. These are more excuses. My internet connection is fine, since I have no problem with National Geographic, Time Magazine and WebMD, for examples. Further, what does Adobe have to do with the iPad version of the magazine? Nothing.

I feel I will continue to get a run-around with these people unless some more formal intervention is taken. They have already exhibited some other unsavory business practices, such as a policy requiring customers to check their website from time to time for policy changes. What!? They have enough information to bill me, but they cannot contact me of policy changes to my subscription?

For myself and a number of other users who have this problem, I hope you can help to resolve this issue.Desired Settlement: Fix the iPad application so that it works. Deliver on the promise of a tablet version of the magazine.

Response:

At this time, I have not been contacted by Scientific American, Inc. regarding complaint ID [redacted].The problem described in my original complain still exists even when I use a 4G LTE cellular data connection ([redacted]). I include the last communication from the company before I filed the complaint:"We aware of this problem and unfortunately it begins with a slow internet connection. We have spoken to Adobe about these sort of issues and they told us directly that, "This error is due to a bug from [redacted]¹s end and it occurs on slow connections, where the download time is more. Adobe and [redacted] are working closely to resolve the bug." Therefore, I would highly recommend that you go to place that has a stronger internet connection than the one you are currently using. Unfortunately there is no other new information that I can give you at this time. I would suggest that you purchase a digital subscription directly from our website, and then you can download the issues in PDF format, which can be easily transferred to any tablet device."Regards,Scientific American The suggestion to upgrade to the digital subscription requires another $25.00. Spend more money to get what they cannot provide with my $34.97 subscription is, in principal, outrageous. I do want to continue to receive the print edition for my family's access to what I consider to be a good magazine, so the upgrade would require print+digital. Nevertheless, what is the point of an application that doesn't work where I've already paid $10.00 abovethe current print rate for the iPad access? It is now my position that if they cannot provide access through their iPad application, then they should provide me with access to the pdf versions for the current year. This should be part of my current subscription, not an additional payment.Sincerely,[redacted]
