Review: A year ago in July 2012 I had hired sdair.com to find and fix a Freon leak that had been a recurring problem with my AC unit. My unit is about six years old (installed with the new home that was built). Called on a Friday, they were out to my house on Saturday. Mark, one of the co-owners came out looked at the welds outside and determined that the valve that was installed was the cause of my slow Freon leak. He changed out the valve, filled up my AC unit with Freon, pressure tested it, and handed me a bill for close to $1,000. [redacted] went on to explain how knowledgeable he was and that no one else, even other technicians wouldn’t have guessed that the valve was the problem. For the next few days the AC unit stayed cold, and the weather was cooler, so I didn’t have to turn on my AC. Well about four months passed and we had a mini heat wave, so I turned on the AC. Nothing but warm air came out. Called sdair.com, scheduled an appointment, they never showed up, nor did they call. I had left various messages. A week passed called sdair again, [redacted] said he never got the messages. Scheduled another appointment, this time they came, topped off the Freon, said my filters were dirty and that was the cause. The AC blew cold so I was happy. I didn’t need to turn on the AC because the weather had changed and it was cooler. Well two months ago we had another mini heat wave. Turned on the AC, blew warm. Called sdair again, this time [redacted] came out again. Filled it up with Freon, and he said he filled it up with AC seal that should take care of the problem. Well, last month as the heat wave started again called sdair with the same problem, scheduled another appointment for a Friday. I called on Friday morning to confirm and [redacted] said they will come out that afternoon. Day came and went, no call and no technician. I called them the next day. [redacted] said their guys got so busy and didn’t have time to come out, so we scheduled another appointment for the past Friday, September 4th. I called that morning to confirm with Mike, and he said they are going to be there. Tech from sdair did come, verified I was out of Freon. Pressure checked the lines, no leak, couldn’t find anything outside, did not fill up the Freon, and left. [redacted] called and said they needed to go inside the house, but that they wouldn’t do it that day, they will come out either Saturday or Monday. No call from [redacted] regarding Saturday, so I called them. He said they will come out Monday. I called Monday morning, and they said they couldn’t come out because they have another install, but said Wednesday is open. I set the appointment for Wednesday. Nobody showed up, nor did they call. Oh did I tell you that I even offered [redacted] that I was willing to pay half the cost for them to come out and find and fix the leak like they should have done in the first place?

I’ve given up. The only thing I can do is to spread the word through social media and sites like Yelp to prevent these guys from getting any more business and complain through Revdex.com.Desired Settlement: Find and repair the leak or give me my money back for the original work.

Response:

SDair has and maintains a valid contractor’s license. Our license number is [redacted].

It can be easily verified by following this link to the state contractor’s license board.

SDair also maintains several insurance policies to protect both you and it from claims.

We are fully bonded, and this information is also verifiable on the state contractor’s license page.

As for the true nature of [redacted]’s complaint:

[redacted] has an old heating and air conditioning system.

So old, that it warrants replacement.

It has a history of refrigerant leaks which date back to before his working with SDair.

In early summer of 2012, we pressure tested [redacted]’s air conditioning system, and found a significant leak at a valve on the outdoor equipment.

We showed the leak to [redacted], and [redacted] requested that we repair it.

Due to the age of the equipment, we suggested removing the valve entirely, rather than replacing it.

After removing the valve, we pressure tested the system to verify the correction of the leak.

We then vacuumed the system and added the proper amount of refrigerant.

More than a year has passed since the repair performed by SDair.

[redacted] contacted us with a suspected leak.

We performed a service call, and found his system to be low on refrigerant.

The usual cause for this would be a leak.

We added the required refrigerant to [redacted]’s system, along with a can of chemical sealant in an attempt to resolve the new leak.

As a courtesy, we waived the cost of the service call, the sealant and the refrigerant.

That’s right, we did it for FREE.

We then notified [redacted], that if the sealant did not resolve his newest leak, that correction would require pressure testing the system again to locate the new leak.

A couple of months then passed.

[redacted] contacted us for assistance again.

The refrigerant had leaked. The chemical sealant did not resolve [redacted]’s new leak.

We immediately pressure tested the system and verified our previous repair.

The leak is not at the repair we performed.

We notified [redacted] of the leak, and that our previous repair was not the source of this leak.

We then offered to schedule a time to return to attempt to find and resolve the leak.

[redacted] simply doesn’t want to pay for the location or correction of his newest leak.

We do our very best to be fair.

If the source of the leak was our previous work, we would cover the full cost of the repair.

This leak is new and unrelated to the previous source of his leak.

[redacted] is obviously dissatisfied.

We don’t want to leave anyone dissatisfied with our service.

We haven’t charged [redacted] for his last two service calls, several pounds of refrigerant or the chemical sealant we provided to him.

We wish there was a better ending to this story.

[redacted] claims that we do not possess a valid contractor’s license or bond is absolutely untrue.

It can be easily verified by following this link to the state contractor’s license board

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

The system is new, my house was built in 2007 and the HVAC system came with it, it is NOT an old system as [redacted] had stated. As stated this is a recurring problem which [redacted] was aware of when he came out. He never found nor showed me the leak when he supposedly "repaired" it by changing out the valve on the outside as he claimed was the source of the leak. Pressurizing it as other ac repair man had done in the past, does not show a leak in the system. That is why I called sdair to find the leak and repair it. The original leak was never repaired, hence the slow leak that causes the Freon to leak out over time, and my frustration with the contractor to claim they had resolved the issue, when they never did.

Review: In regards to Furnace inop,

We appreciate any help in this situation,

As per my agreement with the listing agent: [redacted] and the owners [redacted] and [redacted], contracted and hired SDAIR to inspect and supposedly fix the furnace and make it work. This was again, part of the closing agreements. SDAIR came out on the 5 May 2015 to replace the Vent on the roof and extend a gas line to make the furnace pass code. SDAIR and the listing agent reported furnace in working condition. I have supporting e-mails and copy of invoice to show the work they performed.

Three days later SDGE came out to inspect furnace and red-tagged the furnace for the second time.

A month later after we closed on our home, discovered a large crack on top of the gas exhaust hood, rusted out burners, and foreign objects in the heat exchanger. I THOUGHT SDAIR AND THE LISTING AGENT SAID IT WAS IN SAFE AND OPERATIONAL CONDITION!

Please tell me this: How is this furnace safe and operational as SDAIR said it was? Say supposedly I never discovered the problems with this furnace and decided to use it. Do you think my wife and two kids with asthma would be alive today? Carbon Monoxide is a deadly gas. It's so deadly you can't see it. You can't hear it. You can't smell it. With this furnace there are no safety devices in place. The only thing that could have saved us was the carbon monoxide detectors.

I was lied to. Manipulated. We signed documents that said the unit worked and was safe but never got to test it due to the gas being shut off for Termite Treatment. They didn't want to take the time, effort, and investment to provide a working unit before the close of escrow as per the agreements on paper and therefore they washed there hands over the phone when I call for a solution to my complaint.

After calling SDAIR to find a solution, [redacted], the manager told me that it would cost me 1800 dollars to provide me a replacement unit. Why should I be liable to pay for a unit that you told me worked and was safe? Again how was this unit safe and operational when I found problems and two other contractors told me the unit had to be retired?

Thanks for any help with this issue.

Very Respectfully,

[redacted] and [redacted] Way
