SEMCO Energy misrepresented their new gas meters, telling us they only "woke-up" to be read once a month when the meter reader drove by
Approximately one year ago a SEMCO Energy installer showed up to install "new" gas metering equipment on my property, even though the old analog meters were still working fine. I told them I did not want a radio device installed and the installer assured me that the new meter only "woke up" once a month when the meter reader drove by. Based upon that information, what the SEMCO Energy installer told me, I consented to the installation. About a week later a different installer showed up with the same story, and based upon what he said, I consented to the second installation at a different location on my property. Within six months someone in my household started experiencing a plethora of symptoms related to electromagnetic hypersensitivity. She already knew she was sensitive to electromagnetic fields because of her reaction to using a cell phone two years prior. She stopping holding the cell phone to her head and her symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivity went away, and were gone for about two years, until about six months after the new gas meters were installed, then her symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivity returned and became much worse. She was on the verge of suicide and we knew we had to do something. She questioned the new gas meters, and called SEMCO to clarify that their new AMR ERT gas meters were not transmitting non-thermal radiation throughout the day and night. David Williams, Regional Operation Manager, told her that the meters do pulse non-thermal radiation in micro-pulses, a total of 1.5 minutes per day total, of 5.86 milliseconds per pulse. This translates to 10.67 micro-pulses per minute, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and triggered her symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivity, worse than she had ever experienced before. We asked SEMCO to remove their new meters because they were installed under false pretenses, and were also making someone in the household extremely ill. We told them that they only gave us half of the truth about the new meters and that they never told us that they emit non-thermal radio frequency radiation pulses 24/7. We told them that had they told us the whole truth, we never would have consented to the installations in the first place. They left out important information about their new meters when they were here trying to get them installed. They never told us the new meters were encoder-receiver-transmitters, until after we questioned them. SEMCO has refused to replace the new gas meters with 100% analog meters, despite our telling them why we need them removed and replaced with 100% analog meters. SEMCO says they no longer use the analog meters and we don't have a choice, other than removing all gas service. Our other utility companies, water and electric, have opt-out programs for those who are sensitive to electromagnetic fields, or just do not want a radio transmitting device installed on their home or business, however SEMCO says they do not have any opt-out programs. I also have rental property and SEMCO is also wanting to replace the analog meters there as well. If any of my renters are electromagnetically hypersensitive, I could loose them as renters. One of my renters has a pacemaker implant and has told me that she wants nothing to do with the new radio frequency utility meters. I don't want the liability that could come with a gross negligence lawsuit either. I have tried to work this out with SEMCO, but they have given me no options other than eliminating all natural gas service.
