Shady Grove wait time and uncaring staff
Hello - I took my elderly grandmother into the hospital this weekend for severe pain. She was having pain in her abdomen and side. We were told we would have a wait of a couple hours. We ended up waiting over four hours before we even were able to go back. Actually I was not able to go back because of coronavirus restrictions but she went in the ER in the back and had another five hour wait! Five hours in pain before anybody even saw her. They would not tell me what was going on in the front. And she was told another two hours to wait for x-ray. All the time, the staff was hanging out and joking around the nurses station. They were not that busy in the back, she told me, and that none of the nurses really paid attention to her other than the minimum they had to do. It’s not like we didn’t have any insurance, and the hospital was very slow that evening (only one other bed filled up.) This is the worst hospital experience I’ve ever had!

I went to this ER on Friday, October 27th about 1:30PM with a kidney stone in severe pain. After waiting for a very long time I was finally taken into the triage area. An IV line was put in and then I was sent back to the small triage area to wait again! After my cat scan I was sent back to triage with my full vomit bag where I sat and waited several hours. I finally asked the PA when I was going to get pain medication and she said "oh you should have gotten that 2 hours ago"! After about another hour I received my pain medication. Another patient noticed a bag of fluids hanging near me and asked if I was supposed to be hooked up! Once again I asked the PA if that was mine and low and behold it was! The RN who gave me my pain medications and hooked me up to the IV was extremely frazzled and I felt like I was a bother to her! I understand completely that in the ER the most critical patients are seen first. I have never seen anything like this EVER! The PA and RN's talking to patients about their medical issues right in front of everyone in triage. Has anyone there heard of Hippa? I actually felt like I was in a 3rd world country and there was a war going on! I along with several other patients in obvious pain and distress were just left on hard plastic chairs huddled in our blankets! I finally saw Dr Woo who spoke with me in the triage area with everyone around listening and told me that I could be admitted to the observation unit for the night because of my kidney stone. Approx 7 hours after I arrived at the ER I was able to actually get a bed there. I was not offered a wheelchair and could barely walk straight after numerous doses of morphine, torridal and anti nausea meds. As I walked into the actual ER it was so noisy it seemed like a party was going on. People at their desks laughing and joking, etc... Anthony was my RN. He seemed bothered by having to take care of me. I could have really used a warm blanket! After about an hour or so I was finally taken to the observation unit. There the care was totally different and so much better. My RN, Carmen was absolutely wonderful! It was like night and day, going from the ER to the observation unit. I don't understand why I could not have been taken there much sooner. I hope and pray that I NEVER have to be a patient in your ER ever again! I am thankful that my son and his family who live here are in the military and receive much better care than this.

Review: I'm writing to inform you and the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital HR team of the appalling my mother had with some Nurses and Techs in room [redacted].

First let me say that my mother, was admitted into the emergency room on Sunday October 5,2014 and the doctor released her on Wednesday October 8, 2014. She was impressed with the emergency team , attending physician Dr.B[redacted] and his PA were wonderful and are very good. The Spiritual team , Chaplain and Priest were a blessing, and ER nurses were professional.

However, when she was transferred to room [redacted]. The staff was uncaring, disrespectful, reluctant to help, almost every time she called for assistance, she had to wait for more than an hour, or if the hour past, would have to keep calling. The responses to the call light was Horrible.

I personally witnessed it on Monday, hours after her surgery; she called for the nurse assigned to her room, nurse P[redacted], around 3:45pm, at 4:15pm the tech Martin came in and pages the nurse again, she tells him “I’m eating my lunch, I’ll be there”; around 4:30pm Martin called again letting her know that the patient’s daughter needs to go pick up her kids from school and needs to speak to her before leaving, she responds “I’m coming, I'm eating”. P[redacted] strolled in [redacted] at 4:45pm.

According to my mother, some of the nurses are not professional at all. The worse one she had was Laxmi( excuse the spelling). The techs are not professional neither, the worse experience was with Marlene.

Discharge experience was shocking to all of us that came to pick up my mother. The doctor released my mom around 4pm, the nurse came after to give her the discharge paper work around 5pm. My kids (5yr old and 1yr old) and I came to pick my mom up around 6pm. When we arrived, we pressed the call light, asking for the tech to help with taking my mother downstairs to the car. Kathie (i believe that's her name), told us that the tech is busy. So ,we asked Kathie to get someone else to help my mom, who just had surgery, and Kathie said no one can help right now. I asked her so, what do we do, she said " you can go down yourself, because your tech is busy". Wow, we were all shocked, I asked again, so how is my mom going to roll herself down with the wheelchair that is here outside the door, with all her belongings? again Kathie replied "she can go down herself". We were very appalled. my mother walked down from room [redacted] by herself to the elevator, then when arriving downstairs, walk from elevators to outside. What if my mother fell down and broke a body part, while walking herself down to the car after being discharged from a surgical procedure?

Thank you for your prompt response.Desired Settlement: Can you please explain to us why my mother was treated with such disrespect, no dignity, poor customer service and lack of professionalism?

July 1, 2014To Whom it May Concern:The patient was seen at the hospital. We have to assess each patient upon arrival and determine an appropriate treatment plan. This patient was requesting to have an ultrasound completed during this visit. An ultrasound was not medically indicated for this patient and therefore was not completed. The patient was informed of this process at the time of the visit. Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

at that time I was 8 months pregnant , and 2 weeks before I came to the hospital , my pervious doctor order me to do ultrasound check after 2 weeks to make sure the baby not breech.and only because of that important test we went to the hospital , a specially one month before deliver. thank god they admitted that "an ultrasound was not medically indicated for this patient". let me remind you that we was only 1 month before deliver , and the pervious doctor decide at that time 2 weeks before we came to the hospital that we have breech ( the baby is upside down- with the head up and legs down) and the doctor interceded that we need to do Cesarean section and this is important medical life threat for the women and the baby.they only check my Blood Pressure and my pulse and the baby pulse.in the end on the deliver day I had to have a Cesarean section and I did the surgery in Holly cross Hospital, because I didn't trust Shady groove hospital.

Review: I am writing this letter to inform you that how the service was ineffective and insufficient. By ER staff at Shady grove hospital in Rockville Maryland.

On April 03, 2013 I walked in the ER department with my co-worker at 3.00 pm and told ER staff about my compliant with chase pain and numbness in my left arm, and hard time to breath.

After the x-ray and EKG an IV was administer in my left arm. I was left alone in waiting

Area for 4 hours, and I went to ask the ER staff I have been waiting for 4 hours

With chest pain, when can I see a doctor? Do you have a supervisor that I can talk to?

No one could give me a direct answer; in addition I asked them if you cannot take care of me let me know so I can go to another hospital.

Finally, the respond from the ER staff was that I am rude and go sit down in witting area.

I did not get any better and still sick and left the hospital and asked my

Co-worker to drive me to [redacted] hospital, about 7.40 PM. we arrived and

Immediately I was admitted into the ER department and in about 45 minutest I was seen by the ER doctor.

I was kept overnight and got discharged the next day with restrictions and followed up with a Cardiologist. I would like to know what kind of people work in Shady grove hospital and how come two hospitals in 30 mile distance have day and night different

Providing services for their patients.

What happened in Shady grove hospital was careless and irresponsible and could jeopardize my health and my life. The ER staffs were not professional and they did not care and ignored the fact about my condition.

The right treatment is not to sit in waiting area with chase pain for hours, and I have asked now I have been asked to pay for service in which I have not received.

I am seeking for help in this matter and explanation from Shady Grove HospitalDesired Settlement: I have been asked to pay for service in which I have not received.

I am seeking for help in this matter and explanation from Shady Grove Hospital

I will not make any payment.

Review: On 10/12/2014 I had a daughter admitted to shady grove [redacted] she was admitted during that time I was interested in long term care .I was contacted by shady grove to notified me she has been accept to a longterm facility during that time I decide I was not interest in that facility and a couple hours later I was informed that I am being held responsible for self since I didn't not accept the referral to the facility during my child hopistalization I was never contacted that I will be signing a contract to state that if I don't not accept the referral I am responsible for a bill.I have never heard of a hospital or facility contacting you about payment when the patient has not being discharge or the insurance company billing .Also one I was not consenting to her the facility and was interesting in her returning home the discharge was extend two extra days .I have a hospital bill finally for approximately 48,000 which the state of MD [redacted] only accept to pay 21,000 whichDesired Settlement: I would like to see legal document that I was informed this agreement .I would like investgation I am pretty sure others have gone thru the same feel .I will also be contacting MD [redacted] at this point I feel like fraud and something else fishy going on

Review: Business is billing me for services related to an emergency room visit on 9/29/12 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. The hospital and ER physician have billed [redacted] State Medicaid. However, Shady Grove Radiology refuses to do so and is billing me directly. By law (42 CFR 431.52) [redacted] State Medicaid will process a claim for a medical emergency outside of [redacted]. According to a billing representative of Shady Grove Radiology, they only accept [redacted] Medicaid and have no processes for billing out of state programs. Business' representative was also misinformed and insisted that federal law and regulations do not apply to [redacted]'s Medicaid program, that Maryland's Medicaid program is solely funded and regulated by the State of [redacted], and states never bill another state's program. [redacted] State Medicaid requires the provider to submit a claim to them directly, and a claim cannot be submitted by me.Desired Settlement: Business should submit a claim to [redacted] State Medicaid. Or, business should credit my account in full and cease all collection activity since it refuses to submit a claim to [redacted] State Medicaid, which would result in a reimbursement. Business should respond with an opinion regarding why it can refuse to submit a claim to my insurance and bill me directly.
