Shakes to Shingles Reviews (%countItem)

Job partially/minimally done over unreasonable extended period of time. Requested cancellation and refund, only partial refund received.
Home energy audit completed by mentioned vendor referred by Liberty Utilities, late 2018, early 2019. Vendor was Shakes to Shingles, Rich B.representative of the company. Agreed to contracted work and provided 50% deposit in the amount of $877.20 on 3/14/2019. Work agreed to and started 4/2019 with installation of a new bathroom fan that was to be automated to detect humidity and turn on automatically for exhaust. Two follow up visits by contractor, second by electrician with promised third visit by electrician by ***, never happened. Fan does nothing more than a standard bathroom fan and installation is not complete, placing a square fan in an existing round hole leaving gaps exposed in the sheet-rock. *** stated on last visit would replace sheet-rock, homeowner to surface refinish after unit was functioning properly. No further contacts by vendor or electrician, phone calls to vendor not responded to, received an email response 11/2019 promising completion of job before Thanksgiving. No further responses. Requested cancellation of job and refund 2/2020 as job was nearing the year mark with no advancement. Recontact twice during 3/2020 about lack of response, received excuses and promise to review invoices and issue refund less the cost of the fan installation. I expressed my displeasure with being charged for a fan that A. did not do what was promised to do after my perfectly good fan was removed and disposed of I assume, and B. gaps in the sheet-rock around the fan that I now have to pay to have fixed or do myself. I heard nothing back until I received $348.20 of my deposit back being charged the full amount quoted in the original proposal.

Desired Outcome

Full refund.

Shakes to Shingles Response • May 29, 2020

The first step for Mr. weatherization project was to install a new vent fan with a built-in humidistat. The way it was wired, the electrician was having difficulty getting the humidistat to come on without the switch being on. Mr. had direct contact with the electrician we hired. We have been waiting for this to be resolved so we could insulate his attic. When he requested a refund, we returned his deposit, minus the cost of the fan.

Customer Response • May 29, 2020

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
The response is totally unacceptable and not responsive. The company hired was the general contractor, therefore responsible for the actions of the subcontractors. If they are blaming the lack of the fan not doing what it was supposed to, that is their responsibility. I was very patient during the process of having the job completed, I had to repeatedly pursue the hired contractor to get updates on status, company became less and less responsive in frequency of response and at the one year mark is when I finally requested a full refund. The installed fan does not do what was promised and finish work around it is now an additional time/expense I now have to deal with after replacing a perfectly good fan that didn't need to be done. The new fan does not deliver on any promises more than functioning as a basic fan. The cost of the fan retail is only about half of what was charged, understanding that cost is increased for labor/material installation charges. Once again, not the operation that was processed, incomplete and should not have been charged full price. As far as the direct contact with the electrician, he was a sub contractor hired by the business I'm lodging a complaint against. Other than being present when the unit was installed after contact and scheduling, I've had no contact with the electrician. I think a year to get a fan installed and added insulation is excessive, I was more than patient waiting for completion and the lack of response to my inquiries in the latter part of the time frame, phone messages left after October, never returned, and late responses to emails just shows the lack of organization/professionalism of the company.
