Re:
Complaint ID # [redacted]       [redacted] ResidenceTo Whom It
May Concern:This letter
is in reply to your letter dated December 21, 2015, in which Mr. [redacted] addressed being unhappy with the services I provided him. On July 31,
2015, I Shawn Ford, the owner...

S. Ford Handyman Service submitted a bid to Mr.
[redacted], the homeowner, for the services to be provided listed below, with a cost
of $1987.00.Remove old tub in the bathroom and install new tub (purchased by the homeowner). This process included leveling the new tub according to the manufactures requirements.Remove old window in the bathroom and install the same window back into the same opening because the window having the tile needing to be replaced behind it.Install hardie board which would provide for a new wall surface over the existing wall studs.Install tile (purchased by the homeowner). The new tile was to be installed on the new hardie board wall.To reduce his costs, the homeowner agreed to install the insulation around the exterior wall, install cold and hot water supply lines to the tub from the shut off valves, and install drain line from the tub to the sewer lines, including traps. These items to be completed by the homeowner were not included in my original estimate. On July 31,
2015, Mr. [redacted] verbally accepted and approved the cost estimate and the
scope of work to be completed.  A copy of
the estimate was provided to Mr. [redacted] for his records-Memo # 15-7-9.On August 11,
2015 the remodel started.  The old tub
was demolished and removed from the residence.  Mr. [redacted] removed the old wall surface and plumbing.  Mr. [redacted] paid S. Ford Handyman Service
$497.00 for the material needed to install the new tub and wall surfaces.  Included in that cost was the cost for the mortar,
hardie board, silicone, screws, plastic, 2x4, markers and spacers.  Upon purchase the amount totaled
$412.00.  All material was purchased and
delivered to the homeowner and approved by the homeowner, including the mortar,
the same day.  When Mr. [redacted]
questioned the use of the kind of mortar, I explained to him that I would be
using the mortar to attach the 9”x 12” floor tile (which the homeowner purchased) to the new wall surface according to
the manufactures instruction.  Additional
expense (included in original estimate) on August 11, 2015 incurred by the
homeowner was $85.00 to S. Ford Handyman Service for time and labor of
demolishing and removing the old tub. On August
21, 2015 I removed the bathroom window with the intent to reinstall the same
window back into the opening.  Upon
removal of the old tile, that was originally installed previously by someone
other than I, it was discovered that the exterior wall surrounding the window was
rotted, which would require replacement of the surrounding 2” x 4” wall
studs.  I communicated my findings with
Mr. [redacted] and that the situation required repair of the water damage before I
could proceed with the installation of the new tile.  The added repairs and the added cost of
$100.00 to reframe the window were approved by the homeowner.  On September
10, 2015 I finished demoing the added work of replacing the rotting wall, which
included patching a hole in the exterior wall, installing insulation and moving
the plumbing wall.  This added scope of
work was to be completed by the homeowner, per the homeowner’s request, and was
not included in the original bid estimate.  The homeowner was unable to complete as agreed upon due to him having
surgery on his hand.  This added work was
completed by me at no cost to the homeowner. On September
11, 2015 I installed the new tub.  The
first step was to take the tub out of the unopened box purchased from [redacted] Sales.  The homeowner was not available for approval
of the tub and therefore did not successfully see what the condition of the tub
before installation.  The tub was
installed with the plastic from the manufacture left intact, providing a
barrier for the tub to not receive any marks from the construction.  The tub was installed as per the instructions
provided by the manufacturer.  The
instructions called for the use of wall cleats attached to the wall studs.  I used a 4’ level to ensure the wall cleats
were properly leveled.  The wall cleats
were in fact level inside the bubble lines.  On September
12, 2015, Mr. [redacted] informed me that he was not able to complete the scope of
work that was to be provided by him, which was agreed upon at the time of the
original estimate.  He was to install the
insulation around the exterior wall, install cold and hot water supply lines to
the tub from the shut off valves, and install drain line from the tub to the
sewer lines, including traps.  By failing
to not install the items agreed upon, Mr. [redacted] encountered a change work
order.  In order to move forward with the
installation of the wall board and the new tile, these items previously committed
to be completed by the homeowner, had to be completed by S. Ford Handyman
Service.  Mr. [redacted] asked for my help completing
these tasks and the additional costs of material and labor were $505.00.  The work was completed the same day and the homeowner
paid the $505.00.On September
13, 2015 I started the tile installation with a completion date of September
16, 2015.  From the point of starting the
tile work I installed and reinstalled the tiles as every morning, Mr. [redacted]
would find tiles that he felt needed to be replaced.  This process continued throughout each day of
installation.The
homeowner states in his letter that the floor tiles on the wall were installed
improperly.  I would like to make very
clear I installed the tiles using the proper spacers and the proper adhesive
that the manufacture of the floor tiles, that the homeowner purchased, according to the manufactures recommendations.  If needed, I do have pictures that would
confirm the spacers being used.  The homeowner
in his letter also stated that the tub has scratches.  I covered the tub when working with a piece
of cardboard every time tile was removed and at no time did a tile fall into
the tub or hit the tub in anyway.Unfortunately,
as a handyman service, I occasionally come across a homeowner that once the job
is completed feels the job should have been done differently.  Throughout this job I sought out the homeowner’s
approval and gave him credit when requested to show good faith, as this
homeowner was very difficult to work with and please.  I cannot and would not change the products
chosen by the homeowner.  The homeowner
inspected and approved the completed work.  The approval by the homeowner was made before final payment was made to
S. Ford Handyman Service.  On October 2,
2015, nearly 3 weeks after the job was completed, I received a voicemail from
Mr. [redacted].  On the voicemail Mr.
[redacted] informed me that the manufacturer of the tub had inspected the
“damages” to the tub, and the manufacturer felt that it was at no fault of their
own, and would not warranty the product, and that I would be liable for the
“damages” of $135.00.  I called Mr.
[redacted] back and informed him that I would have been more than willing to come
to some sort of agreement with him to settle this matter, but unfortunately
because he failed to allow me the opportunity to inspect the tub and tiles
after three weeks after the completion date, I had no way to verify his claims,
and therefore would not entitle him to any refund.  The damages described in Mr. [redacted]’s letter
were not at any time communicated with me before taking it upon himself to
contact the manufacturer and I was not properly given the opportunity to
inspect the “damage” as described by the homeowner.  None of these “damages” were identified by
the homeowner at the time of the final inspection and ultimately approved by
the homeowner.At this time,
S. Ford Handyman Service is no longer in operation.  I have provided many services, to many
different people, always having a positive and professional outcome with
customers looking to rehire me for different jobs.  After dealing with Mr. [redacted] and his
mannerisms on a daily basis, and him seeking to get the job which was completed
as per our agreement for free, I will no longer subject myself to that kind of treatment
or behavior.If you have
any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.Sincerely,Shawn FordShawn Ford

Attn: [redacted] #[redacted] Jan. 3, 2015 It is unfortunate that Shawn Ford Handyman Services has gone out of business. I am sure he can do other things quite well. Unfortunately, tiling my bathtub area was not one of them. You have pictures that I sent to you showing the unevenness of the spacing of many of the tiles. They should all be uniform.  I can’t believe anyone would be happy with the outcome and the way the tiles look. Mr. Ford implied that he used corner spacers. It is clear to see by the pictures I sent you that not many made it to the corners.  The tub was new. He did not protect the surface of the tub until late into the project. He was standing in the tub to do the tiling work.  The reason I did not call Mr. Ford as soon as I noticed the damage in the tub was that I did not want to talk or deal with him at all. As I stated in the first letter, I was under the impression that the damage would be covered under the warranty.  After it was repaired, I felt I would find a way to get used to the poor tiling job around the tub. I could not accept that he did a poor job and damaged the tub, period. I don’t expect anyone to work without being paid. By the same token I do expect a good job done for the pay they receive. He was adamant that he could do a good job. (We even looked as some of the work he did a few houses from us. The work was acceptable.) I have spent approx. $3,800 on this project. The dollar amount is irrelevant. The value of the tiling job is bad at any price. I do not have an estimate of completely repairing the job. I still believe that Mr. Ford should hold responsibility for having a professional replace the tiles.  As of this date, we still have not used the bathtub or shower.  Looking at the tile makes me feel very bad and unhappy.
