I had my first child at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in While pregnant at months I seeked medical attention when I had severely swollen feet and high stomach painsThey checked my kidneys and said they couldn't find anything wrong and sent me homeI lived about minutes away at the time and I had told them that I was worried something was wrongI went home and the next few days I was still having issues with pain and I again went to the hospital where they diagnosed me with pregnancy induced hypertension (preeclampsia) and had to have an emergency cesareanThe father was absent and the doctors proceeded to ask me if the father was blackHarmless question since he was dark skinned and I responded with a noWhat irritated me was the following question, "are you sure?" Some people may think that is also a harmless follow up question but in my eyes it was disrespectfulI had conflicting responses when it came to the life of my childSince he was born early he had to stay at the NICU for a monthWhat irritated me even more is one nurse would come tell me that he was doing absolutely fine and a couple hours later a different nurse would say that it is and that he is "on the edge." This was a horrible experience for me [redacted] I advise people to proceed with caution when they / if they visit Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, AlabamaAsk questions, ask for testing where it is necessary, look around the rooms and make sure its cleanPlease be careful!

I had my first child at Shelby Baptist Medical Center in 2008. While pregnant at 8 months I seeked medical attention when I had severely swollen feet and high stomach pains. They checked my kidneys and said they couldn't find anything wrong and sent me home. I lived about 20 minutes away at the time and I had told them that I was worried something was wrong. I went home and the next few days I was still having issues with pain and I again went to the hospital where they diagnosed me with pregnancy induced hypertension (preeclampsia) and had to have an emergency cesarean. The father was absent and the doctors proceeded to ask me if the father was black. Harmless question since he was dark skinned and I responded with a no. What irritated me was the following question, "are you sure?" Some people may think that is also a harmless follow up question but in my eyes it was disrespectful. I had conflicting responses when it came to the life of my child. Since he was born early he had to stay at the NICU for a month. What irritated me even more is one nurse would come tell me that he was doing absolutely fine and a couple hours later a different nurse would say that it is false and that he is "on the edge." This was a horrible experience for me.

I advise people to proceed with caution when they / if they visit Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, Alabama. Ask questions, ask for testing where it is necessary, look around the rooms and make sure its clean. Please be careful!
