They didn't call before they came to do work.
They didn't do the work they said they would, but charged for it.
The work done was not done well or, in some cases, right.
They left the job incomplete and now won't return contact attempts from me or my insurance company.
They sold themselves as a family company with a great guarantee. They did not and have not met expectations.

Letter to business mailed on 4/12/2019:

The initial install of my roof during July, 2009 was filled with issues:

• Wrong color flashing installed.
o Your remedy was to spray paint it.
? The spray paint has faded or been eliminated over the years.
• The gutters were thrown away.
o Only after some wrangling were gutters provided which I had to put up.
• The property was left a mess.

Over the years more deviations from craftsmanship were noted such as incorrectly used flashing, face nailed shingles and failed caulking.

In the fall of 2017 water coming through a ceiling alerted of a leak. Your records will show you came out to replace shingles (provided by me) in a small area with a nail penetration. The leak did not stop. Next, I was told there are defective OC Duration nails strips and everywhere that was checked the nails had rusted out. It was recommended to replace a 10 square foot area to remedy the leak for ~$1000.

Turning to getting quotes for a roof replacement, other contractors grimaced when they looked at the workmanship of the roof.

The roof was replaced on March 22nd and March 25th, 2019. During the initial inspection and tear off they commented that due to the poor workmanship they were surprised I didn’t have more leaks earlier.

The source of this leak turned out to be both incorrectly installed flashing around a B vent, and that flashing being installed around the W valley incorrectly.

• The Shelter From The Storm proposed $1000 repair would not have remedied the leak.
• There was no issue with the nail strips.
• The leak was due to two instances of improperly installed flashing.

Should someone have to replace their roof after only a decade?

Considering all this a full or partial refund, factoring in escalated labor costs, is expected.

The 2 videos show the faulty design of the Owens Corning Shingle with the solid tar line that trapped water and then had the water exit in other areas of the roofing system. Owens Corning (the manufacturer of the shingles) had to change their shingle design after a few years due to this fact. Pictures are of the areas in question along with a huge great stuff insulation blob that was painted black. It appears that was done by someone to keep critters out of the soffit?

Shelter From the Storm Roofing Response • Jul 25, 2019

This was a project where we tried to help a homeowner who wanted to save money by tearing off the roof and installing the underlayment (ice and water shield) by himself or with his friends(?) We agreed to help the homeowner out with his idea. However, the homeowner only tore off 1/6 of the roof and called us and said he couldn't do anymore and we needed to get to his home right away. To again help him out we dropped everything as a company to massage our schedules and get our people to the home asap as it was only 1/6 torn off and vulnerable to weather. We got there quick before and completed the roof. The roofing system shingles did have an engineering error that the manufacturer corrected years down the road. The homeowner did not like the chosen flashing color. Due to no matching factory color the homeowner wanted it painted. There was cedar shake under the shingles as well as on the eaves so additional wood had to be installed.

We do not agree with the homeowner's statement. We have been back to the house multiple times as noted by the documents, pictures and videos we have provided to the Revdex.com. We have been very transparent with the Revdex.com and we trust in their interpretation of the documents and videos we have provided.

NONE of our properties are left as a mess, NONE. We started our business in 1997 with impeccable clean-up and quality installations in mind and we always leave yards and homes cleaner than when we get there. We strive for excellence in every aspect of our business. Our installation on this project was per manufacturer specifications as they always are. We were there multiple times and have verified that installation. We are certified contractors for the manufacturer. The manufacturer did go through a class action lawsuit in 2009 due to product defect. Our advice was to file a claim with the manufacturer. Our warranty had expired but we were still trying to help out the homeowner. After identifying the leaking area through water tests we were willing to perform an at cost repair.

Revdex.com:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID, and have determined that this does not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.

The install of the roof was to commence on a Monday with the homeowner doing the tear off over that proceeding weekend. Only a small portion was torn off, as mentioned by Shelter From the Storm, and the homeowner had covered the entire roof with a tarp so there was no issue of worrying about an exposed open roof. The homeowner never called asking Shelter From the Storm to come out right away. The homeowner only requested the tear-off and paid the extra fee for it. That tear-off took them ~ 2 hours. Regardless, this is not related to the roof leaking, only the trend of Shelter From the Storm being dishonest and distracting from the issue at hand.

The homeowner inspected the shingles with the reputable company that replaced this poorly installed roof this March and found the nail strips looked fine, only that they were nailed in the wrong spots. Regardless, this is not related to the roof leaking, only the trend of Shelter From the Storm being dishonest, poor workmanship and distracting from the issue at hand.

The invoice says “brown to match existing trim”. Shelter From the Storm installed white, acknowledged it was their error and their solution was to spray paint it brown; which has faded over the years quickly. Regardless, this is not related to the roof leaking, only the trend of Shelter From the Storm being dishonest and distracting from the issue at hand.

Shelter From the Storm missed blaming throwing away the gutters on something else.

If being back to the house multiple times was three, then they incorrectly diagnosed the source of the leak. The last guess was giving an estimate of $1000 to replace a section. As it turns out that section was no where near where it was leaking.

The homeowner spent hours sweeping up aggregate on hard surface and crawling through the yard picking up nails and shingle remnants.

Lastly, and, the leak was found not to be from the shingles but from two areas of incorrectly installed flashing. Shelter From the Storms’ statement blaming the shingles is false.

Regards

Shelter From the Storm installed my roof in the spring of 2018. They arrived on time and completed the job as scheduled. I was impressed with the care they took to protect my landscaping. One area had an outdoor kitchen with granite counter tops. I ask them not to drop any of the removed old shingles in that area but to carry them to the other side of the house. They covered the counter tops with plywood as protection from any unintentional debris that may fall. They cleaned up perfectly after the job was complete. I'm not the easiest guy to please...but they impressed me with the final product. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a quality roof.

We signed and sent a contract in October 2018 for chimney-siding replacement and front-door trim replacement. *** told my wife it would be 2 weeks time lapse between the time from when Shelter receives the signed contract to the time workers show up to begin the project (obviously give or take depending on whether and/or other unforeseen circumstances). In November Shelter cashed our down payment and confirmed trim colors. My wife reached out by e-mail to *** for a project start date. That was on November 26th. No reply. No communication from Shelter from that point of November 26th. December holidays, OK, cut 'em a break. January we are left hanging and still no phone call. I establish contact via phone with *** around the 30th of January to get an answer, left multiple messages. Finally, *** calls me and I explain our frustration at the lack of communication. *** tells me he'll take care of it, and call me back with a date. *** called me back that same day and informed me the project will begin on Monday, February 11th. February 11th rolls around, no phone call day before to confirm, no phone call day of... I am left calling and leaving messages on Tuesday, February 12th. I left messages with Jenna and ***, but to no avail all day Tuesday. I wait till Wednesday expecting a call, with the intent to cancel the project and receive a full-refund for $1,067.00. No phone call all of Wednesday morning, again after having left multiple messages on ***'s phone, and Jenna's phone. I contemplated filing a police report with the *** at this point, as my voice mail messages are not being returned. I must have left 3 messages with *** between Tuesday and Wednesday, letting him know my frustration with the failure of Shelter to show up for a project and for not returning my voice mail messages.

We have submitted the report from our CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system that we use to track and log all customer contact to the Revdex.com. The report shows the 15 times that we have been in contact with the homeowner. We have returned the homeowners down payment. As their material was a special custom order specifically manufactured for their project, we are now going to donate their material to ***. Due to time frames with the special order and the challenges associated with our winter weather this year we do understand the homeowners frustration. We however expedite and will continue to expedite all projects from a scheduling standpoint as we always have done. Our winter weather in Wisconsin this year was very challenging. Here's to a great spring and a beautiful Wisconsin summer! Tell us why here...

Revdex.com:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me. I do want to make things perfectly clear, the attachments Shelter From the Storm provided regarding their communication patterns with us was not correct. Specifically the Nov 14th note saying *** and *** rescheduled that we were tentatively on the schedule for Dec 17th. Then the note on Dec 6th from *** stating a tentative date for Dec 27th. The note on Dec 20th with a new tentative date from ***. All of that communication did not happen between us, the homeowners, and Shelter From the Storm. They cashed our deposit check on Oct 30th, my wife gave them the colors of the siding on Nov 7th and we did not hear ANYTHING from the company until WE called ***, ***, on January 22nd to follow up on our project.

Although we are satisfied with receiving our money back since the project never took place and the company never got back to us on the November 26th e-mail my wife sent with a landscaping update and request for a start date for our project. We are reasonable and understand the conditions of Wisconsin and the winter. When we signed the contract in Oct of 2018, we were told by ***, ***s son, that our project could start in 2 weeks. As you can see, October 2018 thru February 2019 is not 2 weeks, and it feels even longer when there is no communication. When the company rescheduled from the Jan 22nd conversation for February 11th, we received not contact from the company for another delay in the work being done. We were completely frustrated as they did a wonderful job for us in July putting on our roof. This is why we sought them out for the additional projects our home needed. If the company would have actually contacted us, the homeowners, we would not have been as frustrated and the project could have been completed. The documentation provided has false communication patterns from the company to us and we wanted to make that clear. We will not be using this company in the future and will be telling our friends and neighbors not to use them after what happened.

I contracted this company to put new gutters on my house and paid $1800.00 deposit. On 7/31/17 the crew showed up and informed me that due to the decorative rafters they would not put up the new gutters. They agreed to patch one area for me which they did and I was charged roughly $700.00 for the work. This left a little over a $1000.00 of my deposit to be returned to me. On 8/3/17 I spoke with *** and she stated they would send me a check. On 8/15/17 I spoke with *** since I had not received my check. She informed me that she sent it to the wrong address. Later in the day she called me and said I would receive a check in 7 to 10 business days. That was on 8/15/17 and as on today 9/5/17 I still have not received a check. I have tried calling her several times and she does not return my calls.

That refund was mailed out on Friday September 1st. I will check with homeowner tomorrow (Wednesday) to make sure it was received.

Thanks
