Shenandoah Crossing Resort & Country Club Reviews (1)

Shenandoah Crossing. Decent resort with a lot of potential, but in true Bluegreen fashion, a lot was left to be desired. Motto of the week “I’m sorry, we’re out of that”. 4 adults and a couple kids in a 2 bedroom cabin was a cramped situation, but that was expected. That’s why, starting 3 months prior, we tried to get a 3 bedroom cabin or at least get a two bedroom with two large beds (instead of a king and two twins). Of course, no upgrade or change of any kind was available. In fact, while checking in, all 5 of the guests in line including myself were asking for some sort of assistance. The only one of us who received a positive response was a gentleman hoping to get a resort map. The rest of us were dealt a similar and all too familiar response of “I apologize, but we can’t help” or “that’s not available”…etc. The resort itself was in pretty good shape. The cabin we were in was clean, but was in need of some general maintenance. Linens were great quality, but both twin beds were broken down. Wrinkled/worn linoleum and worn stained carpet. I could see daylight through a couple of the logs on the wall. The deck area was starting to show some age as well. The golf course was nice, but that too is in need of some updates and general maintenance. The newly finished lodge and restaurant are both nicely finished. The setting from the restaurant gave nice evening views overlooking the lake, but that’s about the only good thing I have to say about the restaurant. We were again dealt the “I’m sorry, but we’re out of that” for no fewer than 6 menu items. Throw that on top of that some really poor service, and an $85+ tab hardly seemed worth it for two chicken meals, a couple adult drinks, and a couple hot dog platters for the kids. The on-site store was stocked with the basics and also made a pretty good $16 pizza, but who wants to shell out $4 bucks for a half gallon of nearly expired milk or $11 for a 6 pack of “cheap” beer? I was very excited to learn that they sale fresh eggs at the stable, but of course every day I attempted to purchase a few….yep, “I’m sorry, we’re out”. Needless to say, we made the 15 min trek to the supermarket for some groceries that we actually wanted. Fortunately, I enjoy cooking. The pool areas were clean and well maintained, but it would be nice to have the bar operational more than a few days per week. When it finally opened the last day of our trip, of course it had the bare minimum of choices available. I can’t review the BBQ area adjacent to the pools because it never opened during our trip. The lake itself was nice, but if they are going to bill it as a fishing experience, it’d be nice to be able to rent a boat or kayak before 9am or after 5pm when the fishing is better. Be prepared to wait a bit for your turn to rent anything. Our guests actually gave up and never got the chance to get on a kayak or boat….again “I’m sorry, all the boats are out”. The playground-volleyball-cornhole-horseshoe areas were nice, but to be honest, those are pretty hard to screw up. The stable and horse attractions also appeared to be in good shape. I did talk with a few other guests while waiting the morning of our 20 minute late wagon ride who had a bad experience. Even though they were properly registered, their horseback ride was overbooked and they were left behind holding their helmets waiting for an opening. The staff all seemed nice and helpful when possible, but they also seemed well educated in the “I’m sorry, but….” lines. The best part of my experience was Bluegreen’s lack of pursuit after we skipped out on our “membership update” aka BUY MORE POINTS brow-beating. Perhaps their lack of pursuit was fueled by the fact that our cabin phone was not operational. We always had to use our cell phones or go to the lodge to hear the “I’m sorry, but…” lines. In fairness, we did receive fresh towels promptly upon request. This is my 4th year of Bluegreen experience, and the only time I have been truly happy with Bluegreen was out initial trip (when we bought). That was the last time we were able to enjoy nice accommodations. Their logic is to buy more points, and you’ll get better accommodations. We’ve even paid to carry over some unused points, but good luck finding a time when the planets align and you’re actually allowed to use carry over points. It’s a constant struggle to book anything we actually want using points. However, I’ve looked around on [redacted] a time or two, and was able to miraculously find available rooms at their resorts. If it wouldn’t hurt my credit, I would have stopped making my payments and paying my maintenance fees many trips ago. On second thought, maybe I should double down for some more points so I can be twice as disappointed…
