Shiner Roofing Incorporated Reviews (2)

Review: Shiner performed roofing and siding work on my home in 2008. The siding work included replacement of all trim on four window dormers with Azek. On three of these dormers, Shiner installed a piece of wood trim and this wood has rotted during the warrantee period. I asked Shiner to look at the job and discuss an appropriate remedy, but to my shock, Shiner denied ever having done the work. After much complaint, Shiner sent a representative to look at the work. He said he understood my complaint and would talk to [redacted] Shiner to determine an appropriate remedy. Mr. Shiner decided to continue to deny that Shiner had ever done the work, despite the obvious evidence that they did and the concurrence of the Shiner representative. Shiner refuses to communicate further to get this resolved.Desired Settlement: I simply want Shiner to cease the ridiculous claim that they never did the work and to replace the rotted wood with Azek trim as was originally specified in the contract. Oh....and to apologize for calling this customer a liar. I decide to use Shiner despite the fact that they were far more expensive than the other bidders based on their reputation. I even recommended Shiner to neighbors and now get treated with disrespect. Shameful behavior by Mr. Shiner and his staff.

Response:

We replaced roof and some siding on the customers dormers in June of 2008.

Our contract stated that we replaced trim on the sides of the dormers. The trim in question is part of the window sill which has been cut off and replaced with a piece of wood. Our contract, our subcontractor's paysheet, our work orders do not have any indication that we did this work. As I tried to explain in emails to the customer, we can only rely on the written documents.

Furtermore, our warranty requires notification of the problem within the five year warranty period, which was not done. The warranty period ran out on July 10, 2013. Our first notification of the problem was on July 29, 2013. The purpose of a five year warranty is to give the customer ample time to discover a claim.

Regardless of this, we have offered to replace the piece of wood trim at no charge to the customer. He has accepted this offer and we are scheduling this work. See attached document.

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:

Shiner continues to take the ridiculous position that they never did the work despite the clear evidence that they did. I have repeatedly asked Mr. Shiner to meet and look at the job for himself, to no avail. Shiner defends this position because his records do not reflect that Shiner replaced all of the dormer trim. It is unfortunate the Shiner's poor record keeping is being used to question the veracity of a customer. They did send a representative to inspect the work (**. [redacted]). He could clearly see the problem and understood my frustration, but, despite his report, Shiner continues to take the absurd position that they did not cut the sills and install this piece of wood trim.

Shiner has indeed offered to replace this piece of trim but only after months of arguing over something so obvious and simple. I remain hopeful that this sad chapter can be closed, but the replacement has not yet been done. Given the treatment I've recieved from Shiner to date, I am unable to say that this matter has been resolved until the work is done. I will hope that we can close this case in the near future, once the replacement is done.

[redacted],

We repaired the trim at this house on Nov. 6. At no charge. We have not heard anything else from the customer so we assume he is satisfied with the work.

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me. It is indeed a shame that this could not have been resolved without all of the difficulty. If I were ever to use Shiner again, I would make sure that I thoroughly document each phase of the work in pictures so as to prove what work was done. Live and learn....

Regards,

Review: Shiner offered to revise the amount contracted as the work progressed, I suggested new wood decking due to rot that was visible but insurance would not cover it, we agreed that as they saw the need they would change wood and they proceeded to change it all (at $70 per sheet!! when the insurance quoted me $35 max) and bill me for it, I had to pay out of pocket because my insurance did not cover it. Nonetheless I paid over $6,000 out of pocket plus $8,000 from the insurance for a total of $14,000, more than enough, according to the insurance company for a small colonial single detach home like mine. They still want an additional $4,000 which I can not pay as the insurance will not pay anymore and my bank turned down a home improvement line.Desired Settlement: Settle the work done at $14,000.00 already paid and for which I have not even received a company accounting statement (I have only received a statement for the first insurance payment of $6,000 back in January). I have continue to pay every month up until the $14,000 amount.
