I write this review as a fyi for others considering purchasing a puppy from Shiraz Farms. I too, am a small business owner and understand the power of an online review such as this, but feel that the owners of Shiraz Farms did not step up and do the right thing in our situation.

I purchased a puppy on Aug. 18th who began to cough less than 36 hrs after we got her home. After a trip to our vet, he asked that I call the breeder to determine whether any other dogs at their facility were coughing. I told the owner's daughter that our puppy was coughing and that our vet considered her to be underweight. She stated that had another dog coughing but that the dog was treated with antibiotics and was better. She disputed that our puppy was underweight. The big issue was the cough. As of Oct. 1st, our puppy was still not healthy and had been under a vet's care non-stop since we got her home in August. She required multiple visits to our vet but did not respond to antibiotics used to treat respiratory infections. What everyone thought had been a fairly normal respiratory infection was not that at all. She began to quickly decline and it was recommended that we take her to the Charleston Veterinary Referral Center for acute care. After a tracheal wash under anesthesia, it was determined that the puppy had pneumonia and required 3 separate antibiotics to treat her infections. This whole situation was like a slow speed train wreck -- and my feeling is that we never had to be in the situation at all.

When we originally saw the puppy and committed to purchasing her, the owners told us that she would be transferred to their training facility to be crate and leash trained. We were charged for her time being crate and leash trained prior to picking her up. The training facility was Dogs Downtown in Chantilly, VA, where Shiraz Farms trains numerous dogs, both those from their own farm as well as those owned by others. Our puppy was not fully vaccinated when we picked her up at Dogs Downtown due to her age, and was therefore susceptible to multiple bacteria infections that would have come from exposure to those numerous dogs.

When I contacted the owner to discuss our situation and to request reimbursement for the cost of the puppy after the puppy was finally healthy, she out of the blue stated that the puppy had only been taken to Dogs Downtown the morning we picked her up. I had not asked that question. I asked Shiraz Farms to reimburse me for the cost of the puppy only, not for the vet bills. The vet bills in our case were over $5000, and I considered my request to be fair.

This review is not about the temperament or conformation of our puppy Gracie, because now that she's healthy it's clear that she's going to be a great dog one day. This review does however call into question the decisions made by Shiraz Farms both in their handling of a puppy not yet fully inoculated as well as their treatment of a client who was trying her best to do the right thing by an animal and to fix a situation neither she nor the puppy deserved to be in.

We have purchased two German Shepherds from Shiraz Farm German Shepherds over the past 5 years. They are beautiful inside and out and well balanced shepherds. They are easy to train. I have owned German Shepherds for over the past 20 years and they are very well breed dogs. I would highly reccomend them. They work with you to make sure you get the right dog for your family and other dogs in the household.. Hopefully we will be adding another one next year to our family. They are wonderful beautiful, healthy german shepherds.

REPONSE TO Revdex.com CASE #[redacted]FROM: Shiraz Farm German ShepherdsDate:  April 8,

via credit card.  (As a background, Ms. [redacted] admitted that she
had visited us 3 years prior to this date and wanted to buy a puppy, but came
back this year to make the purchase.  She
had known of our operation for a long time prior to the date of the purchase). At
the time of purchase she signed a Sales agreement that stated that the deposit

reason that the deposit is nonrefundable is because we want to insure their

Thus, we sell a specific puppy to each buyer and we need their full
commitment so that we don’t lose the opportunity to place the puppy with a
serious buyer before the puppy is too old.
The deposit paid was $2,060.00 (3% PayPal fee).  She picked up the puppy on April 2, 2016 and
at that time paid the remaining balance of $2060.00 via credit card. Before she left we went over her folder including her

too much responsibility to raise a young puppy at this time.  We told her that she could exchange the puppy
for a different one, but she said that she had changed her mind and wanted to
return the puppy at this time.    In an effort to accommodate her, we met her
half way in Leesburg VA to pick up the puppy.
At that time, she signed a document upon returning the puppy stating
that she has the right to exchange the puppy up to one year and the deposit is
nonrefundable.  We promptly refunded the
final 50% that was paid on the same day the puppy was returned.Regarding her other comments about our puppies not being
raised in our house it is completely untrue.
She simply wanted to be mean spirited and not be honest with us about
the reason she was really wanting to return the puppy.  The real reason she was returning the puppy
was that she had not slept that night and was overwhelmed.    We provided proof that the litter had been
registered and that she would receive her document shortly, but she was
illogical and that is why she came up with the excuses. We have never had any issues with any clients since

been honest with us, we would have refunded the whole amount immediately even
though the contract states that it is nonrefundable.  Instead, she felt that she could get her
deposit by threatening and falsifying the information provided to your

her deposit if she will accept that she returned the puppy because she had

We had an awful experience with Shiraz Farms. We purchased a female German Shepherd puppy from them about two years ago. Less than six months after having this puppy, she was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia. She had no hip socket or ball on one side, and she was already displaying symptoms of hip dysplasia on her other hip. She had to undergo surgery twice to carve a socket into her hip and attach a ball onto the same hip. When we called Shiraz Farms, they refused to help out with any of the cost of the medical care. They offered to trade a new dog for the one we had already bonded with. The breeder, Leigh, was completely unsympathetic. If she was willing to replace our dog with another $2000 dog, then why couldn't she simply provide some money towards our dog's medical care? Because she was probably banking on the fact that we would never trade her in, so she wouldn't be out any money. Also, we can't trust what she would do with the dog. Why would she keep a puppy that required thousands of dollars of surgery and give us a dog? It would have been easier for her to just euthanize our dog, which is what we feared. Leigh doesn't let you see where she keeps the dogs - the puppies are kept in her basement, so I don't know the conditions in which they live. We were appalled with them, and they acted completely surprised and said that they had never had this happen before. Yeah right, you've absolutely never had this happen before?! We sent them the x-rays, as asked, and they never got back to us. We also left them a couple of messages and they didn't return our calls. After doing some more research online, I've found that they have had several hip dysplasia cases, which they failed to disclose. Thanks Shiraz Farms for draining my in-laws of several thousand dollars with a defective animal. This poor dog had to be crated with minimal movement for over four months. It was pure hell. Do not purchase a dog from these people.

I have bought a GSD from Shiraz and am going to return for my next pup. There are several poor reviews with stretches of truth and unrealistic expectations. #1 The utmost precaution is taken at this facility to prevent hip dysplasia. Each puppy’s parents’ lineage and health record is checked before Shiraz buys a breeding prospect. Parents x-ray score (OFA) is listed. No breeder has 100% control over thei puppy’s genetics. However, Shiraz does an extremely thorough job supported by an expert level veterinarian. The contract is REALLY clear. They were willing to exchange a puppy.
When I bought mine, I put s deposit on a puppy that had a bump on his belly. It concerned me but I still wanted the puppy. She sold the puppyto someone else. Sure I was upset, but now I realize why she did it.
Her place is immaculate. The puppies go outside on her lawn in a roundpen daily. Clients are able to meet parents and grandparents. I was shown the entire farm, impromptu! The puppies are NOT in a basement. She has coverted her garage into a nursery. Her mamas allow you to hold their babies. Management ensures that they get a “break” and go outside, too. (Moms are also not bred to their death- 2 x per year and end in time to enjoy the rest of their lives. Many of her dogs live throughout her huge house. Thank I know a lot about this breeder because I hung around for a few months weighing my options. They had to have lots of patience to tolerate me. I also kept asking questions months after my puppy came home!
I have seen too many deplorable irresponsible people who call themselves breeders. Shiraz’s objective is to improve the breed. She will refuse to breed a dog for several reasons that I learned. One I recall wouldn’t be bred bc it wasn’t “smart enough”.
Shiraz’s quality shepherds are #1 in my book. I recommend thisbreeder without hesitation. I also swear by the custom puppy pick they predict will fit best for you and your family.

Review: I just had a very bad experience with Shiraz Farms,a breeder of German Shepherds in Upperville Virginia. I saw their website (Shirazfarmgsd.com) a few weeks ago and on it they had a puppy that was what I was looking for. Their website says:

"Shiraz Farm German Shepherds come from the very best pedigrees."

I paid $4060 (the $60 was for the Paypal they ordered) and got a puppy with no AKC registration.

Long story short, the contract I signed said the puppy was AKC registered and after the breeder received my payment in full $4060 on Saturday, April 2nd 2016, Leigh at Shiraz said "the papers would come later...in about a month. And if I forget to send them, remind me." I gave the puppy back within 24 horrible hours. I spent all weekend driving back and forth from Northern MD to VA and now I still have no idea why I didn't get AKC papers. She never offered an explanation as to why she didn't have the papers and never apologized, She just accused me of not trusting her when I said I wanted to return the puppy because it had no papers.Desired Settlement: They advertise on their website:

ALL SHIRAZ FARM GERMAN SHEPHERD DOGS COME FROM TOP WEST GERMAN SHOWLINES AND ARE CARED FOR WITH LOVING ATTENTION AND CONSTANT FAMILY EXPOSURE.

It's not true. I got no AKC registration and paid $4060.
