Shrewsbury Electric and Cable Operations (SELCO) Reviews (3)

Recently moved to shrewsbury and quickyly found out the only provider for my house is selco
Used their cable for one week and immediatley cancelled and was forced with the only other option...directv(which I love now)I cancelled bc the picture quality was terrible...ease of use was terrible....and cost per channel upgrade was horrendous
Then I was forced to cancel internet bc of the high cost for a terrible connection as well....50$ month for 30mpsAnd they also do not supply wireless routers
When issues arose they are only open until 4...and not on weekends, leaving you stranded
The only positive is their electric which is somewhat cheap
Selco is what happens when a town decides to run it all

Providing connectivity for use of a softphone on my computer. My job affords me the opportunity to work from home and I have not been able to.To Whom It May ConcernI have written previously trying to square away a connection issue .This issue began in May when my IT department made a change at work. I use a soft phone on my PC to be able to work from home . I lost that ability when my company upgraded the phone system and I could no longer get the phone to connect through Selco. However everyone else at my job has not experienced this issue with any of their carriers [redacted] and so on. I have had conversations with your support and we cannot seem to get this resolved . At one point I was directed to upgrade to the business plan to get the access I needed.Which came with a substantial increase in our bill. I have now been left with the last option of installing the app on my cell phone and using the service that way . Which will allow me to work from home but it requires me to have a wifi connection . Since a resolution has not been reached I find it disturbing that I have to turn around and pay you for an additional service to accommodate my work life . Considering Selco could not provide what every other carrier does for my coworkers. There is just something inherently wrong about this scenario . I have to change my service and pay more money to do so since you couldn't accommodate what every other provider is able to ?I just wanted to make sure you knew of this as I now have to save up the money to pay your insufficient company to help meet my needs. The account is under my girlfriends name [redacted] Our home address is [redacted] We make our payments on time and in full through our banking institution.[redacted]Desired SettlementI would like a more serious attempt at resolving my issue. Technical support had me turn off then off my firewall and this did nothing. Then I was told I could have another carrier pay them to use the lines to get the service I need. Why would anyone pay you to provide better service ? This is costing me money and my time . Living in MA. does come with the inconvenience of brutal winters which would require me working from home. I just need this situation resolvedBusiness Response Many ISPs block certain TCP ports for security reasons. SELCO is no exception. One of the ports SELCO blocks is port 69 which is commonly used by the TFTP protocol and can also be a threat for virus propagation (which is the reason SELCO blocks it). The customer is trying to run a corporate VoIP soft-phone directly over his internet connection and has been unable to get it to work. The customer has had numerous interactions with the SELCO helpdesk (including the helpdesk supervisor) and on one occasion the supervisor offered to talk to the customer's corporate IT rep. It was explained to the customer several times that the soft-phone likely uses port 69/TFTP and because SELCO blocks this port, the soft-phone is not able to establish a connection. SELCO's recommendation to the customer was to ask his IT department for a secure VPN connection through which he could run his soft phone. SELCO is unable to directly support third-party software used by customers, but significant time was spent researching this for the customer and the issue was explained to the customer on several occasions. We have extensive records of the interactions between Mr. [redacted] and our customer service and helpdesk personnel regarding this issue. SELCO has dedicated a significant amount of time researching this issue and suggesting solutions. We have even consulted with outside industry experts regarding the port issue, and it was recommended that SELCO continue to block use of port 69/TFTP. Unfortunately, the end result is that the customer's VoIP phone requires the use of ports that are unavailable to SELCO customers.Final Consumer Response (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)Let me be more clear . I have to now pay you additional funds to use your WIFI service that I need installed . The cost of using my cell phone and the app from shoretel comes out of my pocket . I am not asking you to reimburse that cost . I am asking for a lower rate to now pay you to install WIFI service from your company in my home. Is that not fair since your security is the issue .You have also previously stated that many ISP's do this . I have asked for a list of those companies names as I can prove well over 40 people in my office have different ISP's that they are using without any issues. I can provide signed documentation from each individual . I am the only one experiencing this problem.Final Business Response In re-reading the customer's last response, he may have been asking for information regarding enabling a mobile "hot spot" or "tethering" on his cell phone. While our last response dealt with WiFi on SELCO's system, we would not play any role in the process of establishing a mobile "hot spot" on his cell phone nor would we reimburse for this service in any way.
