Review: On November 21st, I went to clean out my dryer vent because I was tired of my clothes not being dried all the way without multiple cycles. I had figured over the 2 years I had lived here that lint had gotten piled up in the vent so cleaning it would resolve it. Low and behold, when I took the vent off the back of the dryer that connects to the wall, I found 7 dead birds all huddled together. There was another bird up in the dryer outside of the vent opening. When I had moved in February 2011, the vent on the outside of the building was missing but I didn't think anything of it because I always see maintenance out and about fixing things. Over the years, there was a reddish color drip line down the side of the building. Again, I thought it was rust and didn't think too much of it. Come to find out, it was the insides of the birds running down the side along with the condensation of the clothes that had been dried numerous times over the years. Upon finding the birds in the vent, I had taken pictures and placed them in a plastic bag for the front office to see. I went down to the office and explained the situation. They told me to write a letter to their management to see if I can get a month of my rent waived so I can buy new clothes for my children since they had been dried in the disgusting bird matter. I had given the letter to the office on November 29, 2013 for them to send up. I also attached the pictures that I had so they can see the evidence. On December 3rd, 2013, they called my phone and left a voicemail stating that my letter/claim was denied and that I have to pay the full months rent for December. All I wanted was for 1 month of rent be waived so that I can buy my children new clothes without being in a bind and they denied that for me.Desired Settlement: I would like my entire month of December and January waived so that I can pay for new clothes for my children.

I am writing in response to the complaint sent from you on 12/23/2013 in regards to our resident, [redacted]. In regards to [redacted] dryer, we were not aware of it not working and there was never a work order put in for her dryer not drying until November 22, 2013. I have attached all the service requests from her apartment as documentation for your review.

We became aware of the dryer not drying on the day that [redacted] decided to clean the dryer vent herself and came upon the birds in the vent. [redacted] and [redacted], Maintenance Technicians for Silver Creek Apartments, went to her apartment as soon as we became aware of the situation and cleaned out the birds and vent. We also had [redacted] come out that following Monday, November 25, 2013 to ensure everything was cleaned out properly from the outside since she lives in a third floor apartment home here at Silver Creek. They were unable to clean the vent out on that day since they did not have a long enough ladder on their truck; however they did come back out the following day with a longer ladder and completed a full cleaning of the vent from the outside into [redacted] home.

We have done everything possible to address and resolve this resident complaint properly and in a timely manner. We understand the situation is not ideal and that it was difficult on [redacted] and have tried to come to an arrangement with her by giving her a small discount on her rent for her inconvenience and as a courtesy only; however we have been unable to come to an agreement with her at this time.
